    • Tensions in the Red Sea: UK, US, and IranUK, US warn against Houthi disruptions; Iran may intervene; Double standards in international response; Reliable connectivity crucial for businesses

Tensions in the Red Sea between the UK, US, and Iran continue to escalate, with both countries warning they will take action against Houthi militants if they disrupt commercial and military ships. The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, may have had their capabilities weakened by previous strikes, but there's a possibility that Iran could intervene to deter further action. Meanwhile, the international community's response to the Houthi threat is being criticized for perceived double standards, as some past scandals involving honors recipients have come under renewed scrutiny. For instance, Paula Vennells, the former boss of the Post Office, was given an honor despite concerns over the Horizon IT scandal, which led to around 700 sub-postmasters being wrongly accused of theft. The complex geopolitical situation underscores the importance of reliable connectivity for businesses to stay informed and adapt to changing circumstances.

    • Protests in London, Taiwan's New President, and Extreme Weather EventsTens of thousands protested for peace in Gaza, Taiwan's new president pledged to protect the island from China, and extreme weather hit Scotland and Denmark, highlighting global complexity and interconnectedness.

Significant global events are unfolding concurrently in various parts of the world. In London, tens of thousands of protesters demanded a ceasefire in Gaza, leading to nine arrests. Taiwan's newly elected president, William Lai, pledged to protect the island from China's threats, escalating tensions in the region. Meanwhile, temperatures in Scotland plunged to potentially record-breaking lows, while Denmark's monarch, Queen Margrethe, formally abdicated after 52 years on the throne. Internationally, the focus will be on how China reacts to Taiwan's election outcome and how Lai manages this critical relationship. Elsewhere, arctic conditions hit Scotland, while milder weather returns towards the end of the week. These events underscore the complexity and interconnectedness of global issues.

Biden's Big Trouble with the Base, U.S. Still Too Soft on Houthis, Clueless in Tampa

Biden's Big Trouble with the Base, U.S. Still Too Soft on Houthis, Clueless in Tampa
Join Jim and Greg for good and bad martinis focused on politics and world affairs followed by a fun crazy martini!

After briefly congratulating Asa Hutchinson for finally recognizing reality and ending his White House bid, they dig into new poll numbers in the swing state of Georgia showing President Biden eight points behind Donald Trump and even doing very badly among women and black voters. His negatives are sky high and some usually reliable Democrats say they plan to stay home.

Then they bang their heads on their desks as the Biden administration finally decides to label the Iran-backed Houthis as terrorists (as they were during the Trump years) but Biden is applying a different terrorist label that carries much less harsh consequences than the previous designation did.

Finally, they take a bit of a break from politics to get a laugh from yesterday's press conference in Tampa, as a reporter asks Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles if he has plans acclimate his team for cold weather when it plays in Detroit on Sunday - apparently having no idea that Detroit has played indoors since 1975.

China says relations with the U.S. should move on from “zero-sum finger-pointing” as Beijing calls for the removal of “unreasonable curbs on co-operation”. Early U.S. futures are mixed despite President Biden’s $1.9tn stimulus plan passing the Senate before it heads back to the House. Brent crude tops $70 a barrel for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic, while WTI hits a 2-year high after Saudi oil facilities suffer a drone attack claimed by Iranian-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen. And the U.S. and EU agree to a tariff truce over a 17 year subsidy wrangle between Boeing and Airbus.
