    Podcast Summary

    • Significant industrial action hits UK with over 100,000 workers strikingUnions demand higher pay rises to combat inflation and real-term pay cuts, while the government and Labour MPs debate the impact on inflation and private sector wages

The UK is experiencing significant industrial action with over 100,000 workers striking across various sectors, including teachers, civil servants, bus drivers, and more. The unions are demanding higher pay rises to combat inflation and real-term pay cuts over the past decade. The government has stated that negotiating the proposed pay rise would worsen inflation, but Labour MP Jess Phillips questions why the private sector's wage increases aren't being addressed as a potential cause. Additionally, there are planned protests against the government's proposed minimum service levels during strikes. Tragically, a 4-year-old girl died after being attacked by a dog in Milton Keynes, and no arrests have been made. Despite expectations, charities reported no significant increase in domestic violence during the World Cup. Overall, these events highlight the challenges facing the UK, including inflation, industrial action, and societal issues.

    • Reports of domestic abuse increase during major sporting eventsFIFA urged to take a stronger stance against domestic abuse, UK and EU making progress on Northern Ireland protocol dispute, Mother's Day deals at 1800flowers.com, and government plans to fine wood burning stove violators

During major sporting events like the World Cup, there's an increase in reports of domestic abuse. The National Center For Domestic Violence reported a 19% increase during the 2018 World Cup. FIFA is being urged to take a stronger stance against domestic abuse during tournaments. Meanwhile, the UK and EU are making progress towards resolving the post-Brexit Northern Ireland protocol dispute. Both sides are working through complex technical issues to minimize checks and controls on trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland without damaging the single market. On a different note, Mother's Day is coming up and 1800flowers.com offers various ways to celebrate all types of moms with discounts on handmade bouquets, sweet treats, gourmet food, and unique gifts. Lastly, the government is planning to crack down on wood burning stoves that flout pollution rules with on-the-spot fines of up to 300 pounds.

Workers Fight Back On May Day, International Workers' Day

May 1 is celebrated around the world, and unofficially in the United States, as International Workers' Day. In honor of this, Clearing the FOG speaks with two workers who are fighting for their rights and dignity. SN 'Yeager,' a spokesperson for the Graduate Employees Organization Local 3550, speaks about the conditions that brought them to go on strike at the University of Michigan (now in its sixth week), the tremendous outpouring of support for their struggle and how the University is retaliating against them. Billy Randel of the Truckers Movement for Justice, which is holding a day-long protest at the Department of Transportation today, speaks about the difficulties truckers are facing in the US and their demands that all workers are paid for all hours worked and greater transparency in the industry. Dems Clueless on 'Moderates,' America's Crippling Inflation, Soaring School Absences

Dems Clueless on 'Moderates,' America's Crippling Inflation, Soaring School Absences
Hillsdale College Radio General Manager and Radio Free Hillsdale Hour Host Scot Bertram is in for Jim, who will be back tomorrow. Today, Scot and Greg start with a martini that's both bad and crazy. They welcome Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips saying his party needs to move on from Joe Biden. But they do a spit take when Phillips suggests a "moderate" governor from the heartland and then the congressman and NBC's Chuck Todd list Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Gov. JB. Pritzker, and several others who aren't the slightest bit moderate. They also unload on the Biden administration's talking point that the economy is great and we just don't appreciate it. The latest evidence is that Americans paid $709 more in July 2023 than they did for the exact same goods and services than they did two years ago. Finally, they recoil at numbers showing 25 percent of American school students missed 10 percent or more of school days in the 2021-22 school year, which translates to 6.5 million more students than prior to the pandemic. They also go through Michigan's numbers, which are far worse than the national average. Scot calls it a "national emergency."

2:35 - Dem Rep. Dean Phillips wants Biden to serve just one term and pass the torch to a "moderate" governor from the heartland. But Phillips and NBC's Chuck Todd prove they have no idea what a moderate is.

9:28 - Americans paying more than $700 more per month than they did two years ago for the same goods and services.

16:39 - America still plagued by chronic absenteeism in the wake of COVID.
