    enDecember 06, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Building community connections in uncertain timesVolunteering in your neighborhood and staying informed on current events are crucial actions towards creating a more connected and resilient society in uncertain times.

Community connections are essential in uncertain times. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer network, emphasizes the importance of building meaningful social bonds with neighbors to prepare for emergencies and create a more connected community. Meanwhile, political tensions continue to rise, with concerns that a potential second term for Donald Trump could pose a significant threat to American democracy. The stakes are high, and it's crucial to stay informed and engaged in the political process to protect our democratic institutions. So, whether it's volunteering in your neighborhood or staying updated on current events, every action counts towards creating a more connected and resilient society.

    • Considerations for dealing with controversial figuresBoth Democrats and Republicans should collaborate to prevent Trump's return, while individuals should be cautious about supporting controversial figures, like George Santos on Cameo, due to potential ethical concerns.

The hatred and fear towards Donald Trump have led some to suggest bringing him back into the presidency as a way to outmaneuver his potential authoritarian tendencies. However, this approach is risky and could potentially backfire. Instead, it's crucial for both Democrats and Republicans to work together to prevent Trump from regaining power. Meanwhile, former congressman George Santos, who was recently expelled from Congress, has found a new platform on Cameo, where he sells personalized messages for $200 each. Despite his controversial past, Santos' charisma and relatability make him a successful Cameo performer. However, it's important to remember that his history of lying raises ethical concerns. Ultimately, it's essential for individuals to be aware of the potential consequences of supporting controversial figures, whether on Cameo or in politics.

    • Rewarding Bad Behavior and Life's ChallengesRewarding bad behavior can have negative consequences, while having children later in life comes with its own challenges, including energy levels and societal perceptions.

Rewarding bad behavior, as seen in the case of George Santos profiting from Cameos despite being kicked out of Congress for fraudulent activities, can have detrimental consequences. Meanwhile, science continues to amaze us with advancements, such as a 70-year-old woman in Uganda giving birth to twins via IVF. Despite the marvel of this achievement, some argue that having children later in life comes with its own challenges. While older parents may avoid the teenage years, they might face other difficulties like energy levels and societal perceptions. Ultimately, the decision to have children should be based on individual circumstances and readiness. It's important to remember that every stage of life comes with its unique challenges and rewards.

Whether it's helping neighbors in need or enjoying shared experiences, engaging with those around us can lead to meaningful social bonds and prepare us for challenges. Additionally, reflecting on the past year and recognizing the good things that have happened, even in difficult times, can help us appreciate life's blessings. From the simple joy of attending live events to the more complex issues like the debate over using diabetes drugs for weight loss, 2023 presented us with a mix of challenges and triumphs. • Creating 'A Black Lady Sketch Show': An Immersive Process for ActorsImprovising with animators led to unexpected delays, but actors' long stays on set fostered strong connections and critical acclaim for the final product, which showcased black sisterhood and inspired a new generation of black women in entertainment.

The production of "A Black Lady Sketch Show" was an immersive experience for the actors, who were asked to improvise alongside the animators, often leading to unexpected delays. Despite this, the actors, including Quinta Brunson, were kept on set for months, allowing them to build a strong connection with the cast and crew. Brunson shared that Eddie Murphy, in particular, appreciated the improvisational spirit, and the show's last season, which aired this past spring, received critical acclaim and inspired a new generation of black women in entertainment. Brunson is proud of the courtroom Kiki sketch, which highlights black sisterhood, and the impact of the show extends beyond the screen. Overall, the experience of creating "A Black Lady Sketch Show" was a collaborative and inspiring journey.

The Yes! We Rise podcast features solutions-seekers, change-makers, and those creating a resilient future. We share stories and strategies to inspire action to build collective resilience and community transformation. To create change, people need to feel like they belong and that they are part of a growing movement. They need to know their voice matters and that they have the inspiration, agency and ability to transform their lives and their communities. They are the key to a resilient future.

From the Navajo Nation to the mountains of Appalachia, incredible work is being done by community members and leaders. Change is often sparked by inspiration: seeing what others have done, especially in similar situations and places. People see that when someone looks like them or lives in a place like theirs, and has created real, true and lasting change, change that will allow their granddaughters and grandsons to thrive — they begin to imagine what might be possible for them.  No longer waiting for someone else to come and save them, they realize they are the ones they have been waiting for.  But what creates that spark? What creates that inspiration?  Learning through stories and examples, feeling a sense of agency and belonging, and getting fired up to kick ass creates that spark.

We Rise helps community leaders and members learn to forge a new path toward creating resilience and true transformation. One person at a time, one community at a time, one region at a time, the quilt of transformation can grow piece by piece until resilience becomes the norm instead of the exception. Together, we rise.
