Overtime – Episode #647: Killer Mike, Jessica Tarlov, Gov. Chris Sununu

    enFebruary 06, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Art and commerce shaped by societal valuesMusicians and artists adapt to societal shifts, and policies that empower Black Americans financially could benefit both society and the economy.

Society's values and norms influence the direction of art and commerce. During the HBO podcast "Real Time with Bill Maher," the panel discussed how the music industry has evolved to reflect changing societal attitudes. Killer Mike pointed out that musicians and artists adjust their output based on the buying power of their audience. Bill Maher also touched on the topic of reparations for the Black community, emphasizing that the country could benefit economically if more resources were allocated to Black Americans. However, he expressed opposition to the idea of reparations as a monetary payout, instead advocating for policies that would help Black people build wealth and improve their financial literacy. The conversation underscored the interconnectedness of art, commerce, and societal values, and highlighted the potential for positive change when society is ready to embrace it.

    • Addressing historical racial injusticesGovernment solutions like education, mortgage forgiveness, and incentives for black wealth creation, taxing corporations, and creating industries can help address historical racial injustices. Learning from the experiences of other marginalized communities is also important.

Reparations for historical injustices, particularly those related to racial inequality, is a complex issue that requires thoughtful consideration and a multifaceted approach. The speaker acknowledges the role of government in addressing these issues, suggesting solutions such as education, mortgage forgiveness, and incentives for black wealth creation. They also discuss the potential impact of taxing corporations and the creation of industries like marijuana for economic opportunities. The conversation also touches on the historical context of reparations and the need for addressing past injustices while considering ongoing issues for various marginalized communities. The speaker expresses frustration with the ongoing debate around reparations and the need for action rather than just discussion. They also touch on the potential benefits of learning from the experiences of other communities, such as Native Americans, in addressing historical injustices. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of addressing systemic racial inequality and the need for creative, multifaceted solutions.

    • Political debates over secession, history, and third-party ticketsStay informed, get involved, and vote, rather than relying on polls. Critics question the legitimacy and motives of third-party tickets, like No Labels, which may sway disenfranchised voters but may not ultimately impact election outcomes.

There are ongoing political debates surrounding secession, the role of history in politics, and the legitimacy of third-party presidential tickets. The discussion also touched upon the cooling moon theory, Nikki Haley's views on secession, and the perceived impact of a No Labels presidential ticket on Joe Biden's campaign. It was emphasized that people should be informed, involved, and vote, rather than relying on polls. Additionally, the No Labels group was criticized for being grifters, attempting to sway disenfranchised voters with promises, regardless of the outcome. The moon's shrinking was also mentioned, but its significance to the political discussion was not clear.

    • Younger Women's Shifting Political LandscapeYounger women are increasingly liberal, causing concerns for the Republican party. Elon Musk's Neuralink technology holds promise, but raises ethical concerns. Some individuals struggle to openly support certain candidates, hindering progress on important issues.

The political landscape is shifting, with younger women skewing more liberal than men on various issues such as abortion, guns, climate change, and social justice. This divide is causing concerns for the Republican party, as they are losing support from young people, suburban moms, and women. On the other hand, Elon Musk's Neuralink technology, which successfully implanted the first microchip in a human brain, holds great promise for improving people's lives, despite potential misuses. Another intriguing observation is the inability of some individuals to openly support certain candidates, such as Joe Biden, due to their personal beliefs or past actions. This unwillingness to engage in open dialogue about certain topics, particularly race, is also hindering progress in addressing important issues. Overall, these developments highlight the need for open-mindedness, understanding, and effective communication in addressing the complex issues facing our society.

    • Focusing on hyperlocal issues for meaningful changeIndividuals can drive local change by engaging with their community, having meaningful discussions with those who hold different views, and focusing on issues that impact their city, state, and school district.

Meaningful change requires engagement and action at the local level. The speaker expresses frustration with the lack of significant difference between political parties and the need for individuals to come together and focus on hyperlocal issues. They emphasize the importance of having real discussions with those who hold different views and finding common ground on a community level. The example given is of judges implementing programs to reduce recidivism and create local change. The speaker encourages people to focus on their city council persons, mayors, governors, and school boards as the most important figures in their lives, and believes that grassroots efforts can lead to top-down change. They also suggest having discussions with family members who hold different political views and finding common ground on local issues. In essence, the speaker believes that true progress can only be made when individuals take matters into their own hands and work together on a local level.

    • Local initiatives by Democratic black women gaining recognition from Republican governorsLocal progress starts at the grassroots level and can inspire similar initiatives and progress in other areas. Focus on supporting and amplifying diverse voices and perspectives, rather than getting bogged down in national politics.

Local initiatives led by Democratic black women can gain recognition and support from higher political levels, even from Republican governors. This is a positive sign of progress and should be a focus for those seeking change, rather than getting bogged down in political dramas at the national level. A recent example of this was highlighted on Real Time with Bill Maher, where two Democratic black women made a difference at a local level, and their efforts were then amplified statewide by a white Republican governor. This is the kind of collaboration and recognition of diverse voices and perspectives that we need to see more of in politics. It's important to remember that meaningful change often starts at the grassroots level and can have a ripple effect, inspiring similar initiatives and progress in other areas. So instead of getting caught up in the soap opera of the presidency, let's focus on supporting and amplifying local initiatives led by diverse voices.

Biden’s executive order aims to limit the harms of AI

In 2017, then-MIT graduate student Joy Buolamwini shared the challenge of getting facial analysis software to notice her. “Hi camera, can you see my face? You can see her face. What about my face?” she asks the program as she stares at her webcam. It couldn’t “see” her until she wore a white mask. The reason, argued Buolamwini, who is Black, is because of algorithmic bias. Fighting it is one goal of the executive order on AI unveiled Monday by the Biden administration. Buolamwini, author of the new book “Unmasking AI,” told Marketplace’s Lily Jamali the executive order is a step in the right direction.
