PDB Afternoon Bulletin | November 14th, 2023: Iranian Espionage & Ukraine's Winter Strategy

    enNovember 14, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Iranian Influence Operation in US UncoveredThe Iranian government has been running a covert influence campaign within the US government and leading think tanks since 2014, targeting the MEK opposition group and shaping public opinion.

The Iranian government has been operating an influence operation within the US government and leading international think tanks since 2014, using funds and instructions from an official of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to shape public opinion in the US. This operation, known as the Iran Experts Initiative, targeted the leading opposition group in Iran, the MEK, with a covert smear campaign. The extent of this influence was detailed in a new report delivered to President Biden on Monday. This news comes as the US is learning more about Iran's high-level influence within the US government and its impact on policies and public narratives. Meanwhile, in Ukraine, the winter months are approaching and are expected to slow the fighting on both sides. These developments highlight the complex geopolitical landscape and the importance of staying informed about global events.

    • Iranian Echo Chamber (IEI) Tries to Discredit Opponents of the Regime in Washington D.C.The Iranian Echo Chamber (IEI) has reportedly influenced US policy towards Iran by discrediting its opponents and infiltrating US government and academic circles, raising concerns about Iran's espionage efforts and potential influence on US decision-making.

The Iranian Echo Chamber (IEI) has reportedly sought to undermine opposition to the Iranian regime in Washington D.C., discrediting the MEK, the only Iranian group challenging the regime on human rights abuses and nuclear weapons development. IEI members wrote op-eds and lobbied against policy shifts to support democratic opponents of the regime. Shockingly, at least three IEI members became top aides to Robert Malley, the Biden administration's special envoy on Iran. Malley was later placed on leave amidst allegations of mishandling classified information. Arian Tabatabai, a 38-year-old Pentagon aide and IEI member, currently serves as chief of staff to Christopher Mayer, the Pentagon's assistant secretary of defense for special operations and low intensity conflict. Tabatabai's academic role at Georgetown University may have been used to spread Iranian propaganda. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer is reportedly considering a subpoena to further understand the extent of Iran's espionage efforts. Given Iran's sponsorship of terrorism, nuclear weapons development, and recent assaults on US troops, it's concerning that the White House and American public may not fully understand the extent of Iran's influence within US government and academic circles.

    • Concerns over foreign influence on US institutionsNational security is at risk due to potential compromise within the US government by Iran and allegations of censorship and alterations to films by the Chinese Communist Party underscore the importance of protecting American institutions from foreign influence.

There are concerns about national security as a result of potential compromise within the US government by the Iranian regime. This issue, which has reportedly affected both previous and current administrations, raises questions about the level of concern and response from political figures, particularly in light of previous allegations of Russian influence. Meanwhile, in the entertainment industry, there are allegations of Chinese Communist Party infiltration leading to censorship and alterations to films. These issues, while different in nature, highlight the importance of safeguarding against foreign influence and preserving the integrity of key American institutions.

    • Ukraine Braces for Russian Attacks on Energy InfrastructureUkraine prepares for potential Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, planning to counter with targeted operations and using cold weather to their advantage.

Chamba Casino offers an enjoyable and accessible gaming experience with over 100 social casino style games, daily bonuses, and new games released weekly. Meanwhile, in international news, Ukrainian President Zelensky is urging his citizens to prepare for potential Russian attacks on their energy infrastructure this winter, which could lead to power outages and civilian hardships. Ukrainian leaders are planning to counter these attacks by targeting Russian supply chains and logistical operations, and using the cold weather to their advantage against the Russian military. While the situation is serious, Ukrainian officials believe they have the resources to get through the winter. Overall, it's a reminder of the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region and the importance of resilience and preparation.

    • The sophistication and scope of the attack has stunned experts. About 18,000 private and government users downloaded a Russian tainted software update — a Trojan horse of sorts — that gave its hackers a foothold into victims’ systems, according to SolarWinds, the company whose software was compromised.
