PDB Afternoon Bulletin | November 29th, 2023: Mystery Pneumonia Surge & The Finland-Russia Border Crisis

    enNovember 29, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • A concerning health crisis is spreading among children in China and EuropeAn unidentified respiratory illness is affecting children in China and Europe, causing symptoms like fever, lung inflammation, and pulmonary nodules. The cause remains unclear in the Netherlands, making it a developing story to watch

New episodes of the No Spin News are now available on Samsung TV Plus, and viewers can tune in each weeknight at 8 PM for breaking news, honest analysis, and the best election coverage. A concerning health crisis is unfolding as an unidentified respiratory illness, with symptoms including fever, lung inflammation, and pulmonary nodules, is spreading among children in China and Europe. The Netherlands has seen a significant increase in pneumonia cases, particularly among children aged 5 to 15, and the cause remains unclear. While Chinese authorities attribute the uptick in their country to children contracting known viruses and weakened immune systems, the explanation seems less likely in the Netherlands. This health crisis is a developing story and will continue to be monitored closely.

    • China's lack of transparency causes alarm over respiratory outbreakChina's opaque handling of health data hampers global efforts to understand and contain crises, causing concern over a potential antibiotic-resistant strain of Mycoplasma Pneumonia and other issues.

The ongoing respiratory outbreak in China, which some experts suspect could be an antibiotic-resistant strain of Mycoplasma Pneumonia, is causing alarm due to China's lack of transparency and communication. With hospitals overflowing with young patients and schools setting up homework zones in hospitals, the situation shows no signs of improvement. The international community is calling for China to act responsibly and provide accurate information regarding this and future health concerns. Unfortunately, history has shown that China's opaque handling of scientific data, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, hampers global efforts to understand and contain health crises. Meanwhile, other issues such as Russia's use of migrants as part of hybrid warfare and China's influence over Hollywood continue to raise concerns on the global stage. It is crucial that countries and international organizations demand transparency and accountability from China to protect the common good.

    • The film industry's pursuit of profits and the news world's advocacy for a stronger AmericaFinland closes its border with Russia due to a migrant crisis, tensions rise between the two countries, and the film industry's integrity is questioned in a documentary.

The film industry's pursuit of profits has led to a gradual loss of integrity, as exposed in the documentary "Hollywood Takeover." Meanwhile, in the news world, the No Spin News advocates for a stronger America and a more just society, while Finland faces a migrant crisis at its border with Russia, which the country believes is orchestrated by Russia as a form of retaliation. The situation has intensified, with a significant surge in migrants attempting to cross the border without proper documentation, leading Finland to close its last remaining border crossing with Russia for at least two weeks. Russia has criticized the decision, and tensions continue to rise between the two countries.

    • Finland's Decision to Join NATO Surprises PutinPutin's invasion of Ukraine led Finland to join NATO, strengthening the alliance instead of weakening it as intended.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to Finland's decision to join NATO, which was not part of Putin's original plan. Polish officials offered military support to Finland, causing confusion and irritation from Russia, which sees it as a direct threat to its security. Finland's border with Russia is strategically important for NATO's northeastern flank, and Finland abandoned its tradition of nonalignment to join NATO in April. Putin condemned the action and promised retaliation. Ironically, Putin's invasion of Ukraine has strengthened NATO instead of weakening it, as he had intended. This is a significant development in the geopolitical landscape of Europe.

The average bedtime for children is around 8pm. Late into the night, well past that hour, angry mobs honk and scream into bullhorns outside a migrant shelter on Staten Island. Their rioutous harassment, meant to terrorize the newly arrived aslym seekers that include children, can be heard in homes far up the street. This goes on night after night.

In this extra pissed off bonus episode of Gaslit Nation, Andrea explains how disinformation worsens the migrant crisis, why Republican crony Mayor Eric Adams with his Russian mobbed up pals is the worst person for this moment of crisis in New York City, and how Merrick Garland continues to empower corruption in America that profits off the demise of our democracy.

Unfortunately, the Hunter Biden investigation makes it nearly impossible for President Biden to replace Merrick Garland (though he should immediately!). But that would be seen by the hand-wringers in the Democratic Party establishment as feeding the far-right’s echochamber. As the clip of the recent Garland hearing in this episode shows, the DOJ was called on by Democratic members of Congress to investigate Clarence Thomas for being on the payroll of Nazi memorabilia enthusiast and far-right mega-donor Harlan Crow. When pressed on that matter, you can hear and/or see for yourself in the clip how Garland sounds dismissive, almost annoyed, like he doesn’t grasp the urgency–because he doesn’t. The latest bombshell investigation by ProPublica, out yesterday, exposes how Thomas worked fundraisers for a group that regularly took cases before him at the Supreme Court. (Look out for our interview with ProPublica’s Jesse Eisinger about their damning investigations into Thomas, Alito, and what can be done about elite criminal impunity. Eisinger led the investigation of former Manhattan DA Cy Vance, Jr. who prevented indictments of Ivanka and Don Jr. for felony fraud after receiving a campaign donation from a Trump family lawyer).

Finally, the second half of this week’s bonus episode includes the live audience Q&A with Terrell Starr of the Black Diplomats podcast reporting from Kyiv. The audio of the first question was removed by request due to the personal nature of the matter: overcoming workplace abuse. If you or someone you know is struggling with an abusive workplace or related issues – whether it's in a corporation, a small business, or a partnership – seek legal help immediately. Contact your state’s local bar association for lawyers willing to do pro bono work or a free consultation. In a time of great economic uncertainty, people are increasingly vulnerable to workplace abuse, whether financial, emotional, or both, and being exploited – so get the help and support you need by taking a meeting with a lawyer to know your rights. You will be glad you did.

Question for our audience: Given the Nazi viper den of Twittrer, and the harmful abuse there targeting vulnerable communities, what are some other social media sites that you’re increasingly turning to and find helpful? Let us know in the comments!
