    • The Reality of Power: Manipulative and Non-Manipulative AspectsThe speaker's book exposes the complexities of power, revealing both its manipulative and protective aspects. Their personal experiences in the publishing industry shaped their perspective, leading to a work that opens eyes and inspires Amor Fati.

Power is a timeless obsession, and people often mask their desire for it with claims of liberalism and cultural interest. The speaker's experience of being taken advantage of in the publishing industry led them to write a book about the realities of power, which they saw as having both manipulative and non-manipulative aspects. The speaker's perspective is that these laws open one's eyes to the darker side of power, and while some may be manipulative, they also serve to protect oneself from those who would take credit for one's ideas. The speaker's past failures and struggles were instrumental in shaping their perspective and ultimately leading to the creation of their influential work. The speaker embraces the idea of Amor Fati, or loving one's fate, and has no regrets about their past experiences.

    • Embracing the realities and ideals of lifeAwareness of industry challenges doesn't mean losing ideals or romanticism, protect oneself with knowledge.

Every experience in life, good or bad, has a purpose and can contribute to personal growth. The speaker, who wrote books about the realities and ideals of the art and business worlds, emphasizes the importance of being aware of the challenges and "games" in these industries without losing one's ideals or romanticism. The speaker's work is semi-autobiographical, reflecting their personal struggles and growth. They encourage being aware of the realities while maintaining one's ideals and protecting oneself with knowledge. The speaker's perspective was shaped by their near-death experience and a desire to appreciate the world as it is. Their work covers the ugly truths and the idealistic, beautiful aspects of life.

    • From darkness to discovery: Robert Greene's journey to becoming a successful authorUnderstand motivations, externalize interior motions, and master a skill for personal growth and success.

Personal growth often stems from experiencing and overcoming difficult times. Robert Greene, the author, shares his own journey from darkness to discovery and how it led him to write books that offer valuable insights on various aspects of life. He emphasizes that it's essential to understand the underlying motivations or "whys" that drive us to do the work we do. Greene also stresses the importance of externalizing our interior motions and mastering a skill or craft to achieve true success. Through his experiences and the lessons he's learned, he encourages young people to embrace learning and the pursuit of mastery.

    • Stories of entrepreneurs with a clear sense of purposeDiscovering your life's purpose is a deeply personal emotion. Embrace it and let it guide you.

Discovering your life's purpose is a deeply personal and emotional journey. Guy Raz, host of the podcast "How I Built This," shares stories of successful entrepreneurs whose businesses began with a clear sense of purpose. From Chobani's humble beginnings in a yogurt factory discovered through junk mail to Drunk Elephant's founder overcoming criticism about her company name, these stories illustrate the importance of staying true to your passion. The podcast serves as a masterclass in innovation and creativity. For those still figuring out their purpose, Guy Raz's own story offers inspiration. He shares how his obsession with words led him to write and help others, eventually leading to the publication of "The 48 Laws of Power." A specific moment he cherishes is the time he and his wife ran a little theater troupe in the 1990s, where they put on musicals and plays together. This experience encapsulated his love for creating and making things. Ultimately, the key takeaway is that understanding your life's purpose is a feeling, an emotion, and a deeply personal experience. Embrace it, and let it guide you on your journey.

    • Creating magical, authentic spacesThe speaker values creating safe, authentic spaces where he and others can be fully expressive and connect. He has carried this idealistic nature into his work, offering guidance on building and protecting these precious spaces in life.

The speaker values the experience of creating safe, magical spaces where he can be fully authentic and authentic with others. This was evident in his childhood memories of inventing games and creating a world with his friends, as well as in his adult experiences performing in comedic plays with his wife. He recognizes his idealistic nature and his desire to help others create and protect these bubbles of creativity and connection. The speaker's work, including his books, can be seen as an extension of this desire, providing self-contained worlds and offering guidance on how to build and protect these precious spaces in life.

    • Navigating the complexities of idealism and realityEmbrace uncertainty and ambiguity, recognize the humanity in ourselves and others, and understand the old ways before challenging them.

Life requires navigating the complexities of idealism and reality, naivete and experience. Human history is filled with examples of individuals and societies making naive assumptions on both sides of the coin – from those who believe in the inherent goodness of people and the universe, to those who believe in the need for power and control. Both perspectives come with their own costs and benefits. It's essential to be idealistic, but not stupid. Be ambitious, but not backstabbing. The path to mastery and progress involves understanding the old ways before we can challenge or reinvent them. Life is not black and white, but a fluid, complex experience. As John Keats once said, true creativity comes from negative capability – the ability to embrace uncertainty and ambiguity. Ultimately, it's crucial to recognize the humanity in ourselves and others, acknowledging that none of us are saints or pure evil, but a complex mixture of both.

    • Embracing Uncertainty Fosters IntelligenceBelieving we have all the answers can lead to harmful outcomes. Intelligence is recognizing our limits and considering consequences.

Certainty leads to stupidity, while embracing uncertainty leads to intelligence. The speaker reflects on the consequences of being an idealist versus being more calculating, and how the belief in having all the answers can lead to harmful outcomes. The ancient Greeks held a similar belief that more harm comes from incompetence and ignorance than from evil intentions. Intelligence, according to the speaker, is the ability to recognize the limits of one's knowledge and consider the potential consequences of actions. The more certain we are, the more stupid we become, while uncertainty fosters intelligence. This idea is exemplified by figures like Oppenheimer, who became truly intelligent only after recognizing the implications of his discoveries. Embrace uncertainty, reflect, and consider the consequences for a more intelligent approach to life.

    • The importance of emotional intelligence and seeking help in intelligenceIntelligence goes beyond intellect and problem-solving. It includes emotional intelligence, embracing uncertainty, and seeking help to make informed decisions.

Intelligence is not just about having knowledge or being able to solve complex problems. It also involves emotional intelligence and the ability to embrace uncertainty and seek help from others. This was discussed in the context of the podcast "How I Built This," where entrepreneurs share stories of overcoming doubts and failures. The speaker also emphasized the importance of having a core belief or idea, but being open to different perspectives to make more informed decisions. While the wisdom of crowds can be helpful in some situations, it's important to have a sense of judgment to distinguish good ideas from bad ones. In essence, intelligence is a combination of intellect, emotional intelligence, and the willingness to ask for help and consider different perspectives.

    • The Power of Purpose and IntelligenceHaving a strong sense of purpose filters decisions, accountability is key, self-reflection is intelligent, reinterpreting ideas enriches conversations, mental health support is essential, a good night's sleep enhances life, and embracing our stupidity promotes growth.

Having a deep sense of purpose acts as a filter for decision-making and ultimately shapes our intelligence. Accountability for our choices is crucial, and continuous self-reflection is a sign of intelligence. The ability to reinterpret ideas and provide new perspectives is a valuable trait, making for enriching conversations and personal growth. Mental health support, such as BetterHelp, is essential for managing challenges and improving overall well-being. Investing in a good night's sleep with a natural hybrid mattress, like the one from Leesa and West Elm, can significantly enhance our quality of life. In the end, we must embrace our own stupidity, learn from our shadows, and strive for personal growth, making every interaction a unique and valuable experience.

The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

The War On The Young with professor Scott Galloway

Building wealth is an unequal pursuit. Scott Galloway believes no one is getting more screwed financially than young people.

Scott argues what the U.S. is doing to the economic future of its youth is nothing less than a war on the young. The massive transfer of wealth from young to old is a topic he explores in his new book The Algebra of Wealth

I was delighted to have Prof G back on the show to share what's been on his mind lately, and enjoyed veering far off topic to discuss love, money, and the nature of true friendship.

Moral Courage with Diane Foley, mother of executed journalist James Foley

Moral Courage with Diane Foley, mother of executed journalist James Foley

Seven years after ISIS killed her son, Diane Foley met with one of his killers. Somehow, she was able to find the humanity in her son's murderer.

ISIS held journalist James Foley hostage for 2 years before publicly executing him in 2014, when they uploaded a YouTube video of James's beheading. After her son's murder, Diane Foley started The Foley Foundation, working to free American hostages held abroad, teach journalist safety, and inspire people to act with moral courage.

I asked Diane how she found the moral courage to meet ISIS terrorist Alexanda Kotey and see him as a human being. If Diane could find the grace to connect with her son's murderer, the rest of us can find the moral courage to see the good in those with whom we so vehemently disagree.

Humble Confidence with veteran and entrepreneur Blake Hall

Humility stems from confidence. Confident leaders can admit when they're not the smartest person in the room.

Blake Hall exemplifies the type of leadership we need more of in business. A former Army Ranger, Blake was awarded the Bronze Star for leading his platoon in combat during the Iraq War. Now he's the CEO and co-founder of ID.me, a digital wallet that simplifies online identity verification.

I sat down with Blake to discuss how his combat experience informed his journey as an entrepreneur and why the smartest leaders lead with humility.

The Ultimate Infinite-Minded CEO with Trek Bicycle CEO John Burke

The jump from $250 million to $2 billion in revenue doesn't happen overnight. Over 25 years, John Burke transformed Trek Bikes into a global powerhouse — one mom-and-pop bike store at a time.

The key to John's success is simple but powerful. Create value for others first, and you too shall be rewarded.

John and I discuss why the best way to win isn't to focus on "winning," but to focus on "play," and how the principles of The Infinite Game have guided his leadership. And he tells me why creative leadership is exactly what's missing in American government.

Be Necessary with war journalist Sebastian Junger

War reporters risk their lives to document conflict. And yet, after a career living on battlefields, Sebastian Junger's closest brush with death was surviving an aneurysm.

Sebastian's story of his sudden internal hemorrhage and making sense of what he saw while dying is the subject of his new book In My Time of Dying. As someone who usually writes as an outside observer, it's an atypical and personal exploration of death.

I was privileged to speak with Sebastian about the fragility of life and why being necessary to others is one of our highest needs of all.

The Definition of Success with author Neil Strauss

The Definition of Success with author Neil Strauss

In 2005, Neil Strauss published The Game, a book about his years living in the pickup artist community. The Game sold millions of copies, stirred up huge controversy, and made Neil a bestselling author.

Neil has totally reinvented himself since writing The Game, and I wanted to talk with him about walking away from that identity of success. This led to a much deeper conversation about what success even is. Is meaning tied to outcomes, or is intention enough?

Neil and I don't see eye-to-eye on everything in this conversation, but I love talking with him because he challenges my ideas. I hope this episode challenges you as well, to continue questioning what the definition of success should be.

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Happily Friended with author Rhaina Cohen

Society treats marriage like the end goal of human intimacy. Platonic friends can never be as important as romantic partners.

What would life look like if we made friendship the goal? Journalist and producer Rhaina Cohen tackles this question in her book The Other Significant Others. She tells the stories of people who made platonic friends the closest people in their lives, doing things together like buying houses, executing a will, and raising children.

I wanted to talk with Rhaina because redefining what friendship means in our lives lets us connect in new and deeper ways outside the rigid boundaries of a marriage or relationship. And it might take the pressure off our romantic partners to fulfill every one of our social needs.
