PPB 24: Ushi (Personal Trainer) has reinvented her life despite living with an eating disorder

Ushi (Personal Trainer) shares the roots of her complex journey with body image and eating disorders. After spending years yo-yo dieting and living with Bulimia, Ushi points out how society rewards achieving a slim body above all else. Becoming slim gave her the attention and recognition she craved at the cost of her mental and physical health. It was only when Ushi incorporated exercise into her routine that she found the education and mindset to a long term wholesome living. In society we rarely ask if the end justifies the means. If it matters that the journey of becoming slimmer is wholesome or painful.

PPB 20: Bharti Lim shares her personal journey of overcoming Imposter Syndrome and transforming her life

Bharti Lim shares her personal journey of feeling an Imposter in both her personal and work life. From a young age she felt a rebel going against the traditional path set out for a young Indian girl. In her late teens she was drawn to a male dominated career in Cyber Security where she was the minority female. She felt she had to prove herself and not show vulnerability. Later in life, Bharti fell in love with her now husband, a person outside of her own culture and once again she had to justify her choice in the face disproval. During the early phases of Motherhood, Bharti hit an all-time low in her life with suicidal ideation. She talks us through the events that built up to her wanting to take her own life. As a Mother, I totally relate to her challenges as I’m sure you will too. Bharti shares her inspiring journey of her road to recovery which I know every new mother will gain so many tips from.

Bharti is a very successful Cyber Security Specialist as well as the owner of Bee-utiful Creations by Bee where you can pick up beautifully made personalised goods. Bharti regularly donates money to mental health charities to give back, never forgetting the support that has helped her regain and rebuild her life.

PPB 19: Emma Hossacks returns to share her battle with anxiety and how she turned it into a superpower!

PPB 19: Emma Hossacks returns to share her battle with anxiety and how she turned it into a superpower!

Emma Hossack returns as a guest on this special podcast episode with Roksana Hussein! Let’s listen intently as they talk about Emma’s personal journey with Anxiety. Emma shares her battle with anxiety, and how she coped up with this condition. Something that most of us can definitely relate to! Emma used her experience with anxiety and turned into a super power since she is now able to identify with young people who need her expertise as an experiences coach. Be inspired with today's episode, enjoy!

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • About anxiety and depression, and why these conditions can be difficult to cure

    • Why new mothers are prone to having anxiety and panic disorder

    • That depression has a mask and cannot be detected easily

    • That young people are vulnerable, and parents need to play close attention to the signs

Emma Hossack, the founder of ‘Transforming Young Minds’. Having had a very successful career, she took the decision to leave her job and concentrate on raising her daughters. Little did she know that being a full-time mum would be the hardest job of all. The birth of her second child made her realise how lack of control, fear of failure and the need to be ‘perfect’ had ruled her life and all came crumbling down when she couldn’t be. The strive for perfection caught up with her and she became low, self-critical and found it hard to see the positives in anything in her life.

She discovered NLP, a life changing course for me. She realised that she had never allowed herself to ‘fail’ and spent her life trying to please others, be liked but none of this made her truly happy. She thought about the world we live in and how it’s changing so fast. With the pressure of school, social media and the decline in mental health amongst young people, what better gift than the gift of NLP. To teach them that there is no such thing as failure, to get rid of negative thoughts and to not limit the belief in themselves. Maybe if she had discovered NLP as a child, she may not have spent many years striving for ‘perfection’.

She set up Transforming Young Minds to give young people the chance to overcome barriers that are holding them back, and to teach them the tools that will last them a lifetime.

PPB 17: Dhipa A. Lee continues to discuss her book "Written" covering domestic violence, restrictive cultural beliefs and freedom through choices (part 2)

PPB 17: Dhipa A. Lee continues to discuss her book "Written" covering domestic violence, restrictive cultural beliefs and freedom through choices (part 2)

This week Roksana and Dhipa A. Lee continue their conversation as they delve into her book, “Written”. Written depicts the life of a young girl, Eleanor born into a complex family where restrictive religious and cultural beliefs bare the landscape for painful experiences and decisions. Written is a beautifully told story of Love, Secrets, Betrayal and Honour through the eyes of a four year old girl, the reader travels into adulthood with her.

Roksana and Dhipa read extracts from the book to fully understand the concepts and beliefs of the character. Dhipa shares an inspirational message of hope that we each have the capability, opportunity and choice to create a fulfilling life.

As with first episode, you’ll continue to learn:

    •           That Domestic Violence should never be tolerated

    •           You are in control of your life despite the challenges faced

    •           We have different experiences in life, and that makes us unique

    •           Through loving yourself, you have the power to rewrite your life story

D.A. Lee is a Bangladeshi-born British author, artist, and poet, best known for her novel 'Written' published in 2019. Raised in a small town in Lancashire, England, Lee describes the cultural challenges of growing up in a Bengali household whilst navigating a western world.

Lee's novel, whilst fictional, draws on many of her own experiences of growing up in a Muslim family and explores the underworld of cultural expectations, arranged marriages, honour, abuse, and domestic violence that often limit women's choices.

Lee first started writing as a form of self-healing through the challenges of home life. The word 'Written' had become a poignant theme throughout the book, a word often expressed culturally to describe the notion of determinism and predestination adopted by most traditional Muslim families as a common explanation for events in life. Lee takes us on a journey through her character Eleanor, a young girl caught between a web of family secrets and lies where she comes into conflict with these values.

Today, Lee is an advocate for women's freedom of choice and encourages women to speak out and seek help if they feel they are in danger.
