    About this Episode

Thanks Tom for taking the time to share your thoughts and words about your journey with endurance and marathon running. Well done on the 1:10 London 'Big Half' half marathon and good luck with your quest of a sub 2:30 marathon at the delayed October London Marathon.

We cover running, training, pacing, preparation and kit (especially shoes). Tom's a regular on the chiro table - he shares his views on chiro and how it's helped him over the years. He also shares his views on yoga and stretching - as someone who is fairly inflexible he opens up to me about his frustrations with yoga and how he found his thing.

Finishing off with some insight into pro tennis from his summer job looking after the seeded tennis pro's at the Wimbledon Championships. Lastly a cool story about Bruce Springsteen. Enjoy.

Health philosophy chat with Jess Hambly aka 'The science of day drinking'

    Summary

Loved the chat with Jess Hambly, the Aussie chiro who has been in the UK for 6 years but just recently joined the Chiro.London team. She has 16 years experience, is a doula (birth partner) and has a super strong chiropractic philosophy. We signed off the week with a glass of rose and a chat about all things health and chiropractic.

    Summary of what was discussed.

    • What is chiropractic , Jess's elevator pitch.
    • Jess Hambly the chiropractor, her story from the beginning to now.
    • Jess the professional associate - her opinion on why life as an associate is better than being a practice owner, given the right environment.
    • Bourbon v Cognac - blind tasting live on the pod
    • Unpopular opinions: challenging the germ theory of disease in a post covid world, how exposure does not always equal infection.
    • Definition of health - Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
    • Jess's past roles as a doula and how its helped her understand and help more pregnant women.
    • Jess and her coaches/mentors - how its helped her navigate 16 years as a chiropractor.

Level up your chiro philosophy with Nimrod Mueller

Level up your chiro philosophy with Nimrod Mueller

Loved this chat with Nimrod Mueller. This podcast episode essentially is about two things. 1. levelling up your chiro philosophy to a new unknown chiro philosophy 'gaming' level that I didn't know existed. 2. Unpacking the day I spent with Nimrod and some of the UK leaders of chiropractic plotting course for Chiro in the UK and discussing the next event taking place in March 2024.

If you don't now him, Nimrod is an Aussie chiropractor who graduated from Sydney college, Australia, practiced in the UK, then 10 years back in Sydney and now in Barcelona. If you haven't heard Nimrod speak he's one of the cleanest thinking docs and clearest communicators of chiropractic around. He's been politically active in the Aus and more recently he has teamed up with Mark Postles and become a coach at Quest.

If you are keen to get involved in the next chiro meet up just email Nimrod and the details are....

Martin Harvey - Better ways to communicate and engage with your patients for improved retention.

Loved this chat with Martin Harvey, one for the chiropractors, I (Craig McLean) was in London 2ºC he was in Melbourne 30ºC and we covered in one episode so many ways to engage better with your clients to enable you to provide better service which naturally will encourage people to stay with you longer.

At the beginning, after setting the scene, we tackle the question as to whether it's appropriate to encourage people to be life long chiropractic patients. Some in the profession suggest it's not appropriate and we should be able to teach/train/coach all people out of a problem and dis-engage with them as soon as possible or you are just ripping people off. We came to the conclusion that with todays stressful lifestyles and peoples desire to be as healthy as possible there is a need and desire by many to add chiropractic to their healthy lifestyle choices hence it is appropriate to some people.

So listen on to find out things to do during your 1st, 2nd or routine visits that can help you engage better with your clients. Martin is an expert at helping us communicate more effectively to help people move from focus on pain to prevention and eventually performance. Spoiler alert - all about building bridges from where the person is at or focused and bridging to the possibilities of a different paradigm.

Thanks Martin here are some links to Martin's work.

Barcelona Chiro College Head Adrian Wenban joins us for a chat about chiro education globally

Barcelona Chiro College Head Adrian Wenban joins us for a chat about chiro education globally

Craig McLean, your host, welcomes Adrian Wenban, chiropractor and head of Barcelona College of Chiropractic. Following on from our last episode where a recently graduated student from both RMIT and Barcelona filled us in on the differences between the two programs.

We ask Adrian about the history of the Barcelona college, when it started, how big it is, how many students per year, but mainly how the ethos of the education is true to the origins of the chiropractic profession, keeping the students focused on the founding principles of the profession.

He expands on this to explain how three main techniques are taught, the students are hands on from year one and its not discouraged to discuss the term subluxation and DD Palmer. He encourages all of his students to find and develop their own personal philosophy around health, healing and chiropractic.

We talk about the recent RMIT situation in Melbourne Australia, where without warning or consultation the program was closed down and the profession lost 140 graduates a year. He has an opinion on where that program went wrong.

Hope you enjoy this episode, Adrian and I have history and he reminded me that he actually worked in Putney Chiropractic back in the 1990's before I took over ownership.

Chiro student life at both RMIT and Barcelona. Isaac Whittingham shares his chiro education journey.

Isaac reached out after finishing chiro college in Barcelona and after finding a little bit about his story I thought it would be a journey others may enjoy. He started chiro school at RMIT Melbourne Australia 6 years ago during the hardest hit covid years eventually finishing  his  studies at Barcelona College of Chiropractic. He's in the UK at the moment awaiting to sit the GCC test of competence and looking to work in the UK.

The news that RMIT is closing its doors to new chiropractor students in 2024 made me want to find out what is happening downunder, at the place I trained. Isaac shares some insight into life at RMIT and how it compares to the Barcelona college experience.

Here's the link to the Martin Harvey Pod with Phil Embrall about the RMIT situation.

Isaac is a 3rd generation chiropractor, son of Wayne Whittingham and Melissa Sandford (UCA fame).

Lessons learned from hitting a sub 2hr 30min pb on your 20th marathon, Tom Mackay joined by Ravi Rudner

Lessons learned from hitting a sub 2hr 30min pb on your 20th marathon, Tom Mackay joined by Ravi Rudner

We've asked Tom Mackay to come back and record his 3rd episode on the chiro.london pod with host Craig Mclean. He's just back from running a sub 2h:30min marathon in Berlin and at 2:26 it was a pb by 8 minutes. It took him 20 marathons and a load of life lessons along the way to find a way to conquer his nemesis time. This episode was recorded in London but we were joined by fellow chiropractor Ravi Ruder who dialled in from Sydney Australia. (Tom was training in Sydney in the lead up to the marathon)

How was this achieved? Tom outlines how he tamed his nervous system feedback during training and racing. Not the direction I anticipated the conversation to go but really interesting to see how he tackled the daunting task. He outlines his 16 week lead up to the race and how he hit all the sessions on point set by his coach.

He discusses how he uses a chiropractor for injury prevention and as a sounding board to have the confidence to push through some mega hard training sessions. Big shout out to Doc Bryan Thirsk in Putney Chiropractic Tom's usual chiro while in London.

What an episode, especially if you are into running be it as a beginner or a marathon runner. But even if you are not into running, this is a story of perseverance and commitment setting out a plan to achieve a goal when others would have given up and started their golf careers.

We cover the shoe wars and Tom has an opinion about how much difference shoe technology makes to  running times at present.

Your financial health, with Tom Grunsell from Westminster Wealth (a must listen for the chiropractors)

Episode 78: Financial health episode. The aim was to provide some really useful information to chiropractors, anyone who is self employed or business owners about a topic that may be perceived as a bit dull.  If you make it through this episode you will walk away with valuable tools to make your financial life much easier and provide a clear path to building wealth and saving tax.

We start by defining what is wealth? We tackle the concept of why 'profit' is often a dirty word in healthcare.

Then we cover the below topics....

    Financial services
Accountants and IFAs - differences and how do you find a good one?
How much do you need to earn to warrant using an IFA?
Given the slice they take from the investments why should we use them over just winging the investments ourselves?

Wealth planning and cash flow forecasting.

    Self employment.
Being a sole trader vs starting a company (we run through the tax brackets)
    Tax planning
ISA’s, Pensions and other efficient ways to save tax as a high earner

    Property
Mortgages and buying property (more complicated when self employed)
    Renting vs Owning a property

HRV Heart Rate Variability & Whoop with Dr Conor Ward

HRV Heart Rate Variability & Whoop with Dr Conor Ward

Listen in to episode 77 where myself, Craig Mclean and Doc Conor Ward ‘the health elevator’ discuss heart rate variability (HRV), what is it and why do we measure it?

What effects does chiropractic have on HRV, your nervous system and your overall health.

Lastly what is whoop / other wearable health tech devices that measure HRV, our overall strain/stress and recovery scores and how can they add to the body of scientific evidence to support how healthy lifestyle choices including a visit to the chiropractor can positively impact your overall health and wellbeing.

Early research on chiro and HRV in the link below, we need more but let's keep chatting about it and inspiring a larger body of evidence on the topic.

Welcome to Katelyn McGregor who is a chiropractor, mother of two, married to Andy McGregor a great Chiro a mate of mine, business owner and part of a private midwifery offering.

We discuss loads about being pregnant as a chiropractor, following your own advice, preparing your body, how long should you practice for before maternity leave, giving yourself time for the best possible experience, preparing yourself financially for the inevitable time out as either a self employed chiro or practice owner.

Then Katelyn shares some professional experience both as a chiro and as a member of a private midwifery team. How best to help your clients or patients.

I don't believe we chatted for 90 mins, it's a long one and quite a niche topic but I hope you enjoy and find some insight from our ramblings.
