    enDecember 27, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • Navigating unexpected challenges through entertainment and connectionEntertainment and connection help us adapt and find humor in challenging times, be it international espionage or lockdown parenting.

Life can present unexpected challenges, whether it's navigating international espionage or dealing with the unique struggles of lockdown parenting. In the realm of entertainment, FX's The Veil offers an exhilarating spy thriller, while Bumble introduces new features to enhance the online dating experience. Meanwhile, in the world of podcasts, Rob and Josh explore the realities of lockdown parenting through candid conversations with famous parents and listeners. Despite the chaos, they find solace in the shared experiences and humor of their situation. The holiday season brought a Christmas special episode, providing closure to some cliffhangers and leaving listeners eager for more. Ultimately, these examples remind us that even in the most challenging times, there's value in connection, adaptation, and a good sense of humor.

    • Making the Best of Unexpected Challenges During the HolidaysDespite unexpected challenges, the holiday season can still be filled with joy and laughter. Adapt to setbacks and make the best of the situation to create cherished memories.

Even with unexpected challenges, such as negative test results and illness, it's important to make the best of the situation and enjoy the holidays with loved ones. Rob's experience of a negative test result and a sickness on Christmas Eve didn't dampen his spirits, and he managed to make Christmas special for his family despite the setbacks. Furthermore, he discovered that he and his friends are not very handy when it comes to assembling things, but they make up for it by being "pure" and getting someone else to do the job. Despite the challenges, the holiday season can still be filled with joy and laughter, even if things don't go as planned.

    • Essential bike shops provide solutions during chaotic timesEssential bike shops remain open during crises and provide valuable services, even amidst stressful situations and unexpected repairs.

Even during a pandemic and unexpected bike troubles on Christmas Eve, essential shops like bike shops remain open to ensure the safety and functionality of essential items, even if it means dealing with chaotic situations. The experience of getting a child's bike fixed during a fight outside the shop was stressful but ultimately saved the holiday. The bike shop owner, despite dealing with numerous panicked customers, managed to provide a solution, showing the importance of these shops during uncertain times. The price may seem high, but in moments of need, the convenience and peace of mind are worth it. Additionally, the bike shop industry may use the fear of brake imbalance to encourage customers to come in and buy unnecessary repairs.

    • Creating cherished Christmas Eve traditionsCreate new traditions on Christmas Eve for joy and meaning, enjoy couple moments, and find inspiration for meals at grocery stores

Creating new traditions on special occasions like Christmas Eve can bring joy and make the experience more meaningful. The speaker shared how they started exchanging presents with their partner on Christmas Eve once the kids are in bed, and it has become a cherished tradition for them. They also enjoy having a Chinese and watching Muppets Christmas Carol every Christmas Eve. The speaker even invented the tradition of having Christmas Eve chips when they went for a walk with a friend on a cold Christmas Eve afternoon. The idea is that traditions don't have to be set in stone and can be created on the spot to bring happiness and excitement. Another takeaway is the importance of taking time for couple moments during the holiday season, as the hustle and bustle of Christmas Day can make it challenging to fully appreciate presents and spend quality time together. The speaker also emphasized the importance of finding inspiration for meals at grocery stores like Kroger, where there are plenty of options and savings to be found.

    • Creative leftover repurposing and holiday joyEmbrace the unexpected and find joy in repurposing leftovers and new experiences during the holiday season.

Finding creative ways to repurpose leftovers and letting go of inhibitions can bring unexpected joy during the holiday season. The discussion revolves around two unique traditions: Yorkshire Pudding Catch and assembling a bouncy castle on Christmas Eve. The former involves playfully throwing leftover Yorkshire puddings as a fun game, while the latter turned out to be a challenging experience due to underestimating the complexity of the task. Despite the initial difficulties, the family managed to set up the bouncy castle for their children, who were thrilled to stay up late and enjoy it. The key takeaway is that embracing the unexpected and finding joy in the process can make holiday experiences memorable.

    • Managing Children's Excitement on Christmas EveCreating cherished family traditions while managing children's excitement requires humor, fun activities, and a strategic approach to bedtime.

Managing children's excitement on Christmas Eve can be a challenge, but finding ways to wind them down before bedtime can lead to a more enjoyable and restful night for everyone. The speaker shared his experience of keeping his children entertained and calm on Christmas Eve by using humor, fun activities, and a strategic approach to bedtime. However, he also shared a moment of nostalgia when he realized a childhood tradition he had carried out with his own children was based on a misunderstanding. Despite the minor hiccup, the family managed to have a successful Christmas Eve, and the speaker reflected on how far he had come in providing his children with the magical experiences he had always dreamed of. Overall, the conversation emphasized the importance of finding ways to create cherished family traditions while also managing the unique challenges that come with raising children.

    • Making the most of unexpected challenges on Christmas morningEmbrace the unexpected, cherish special moments with family, and find joy in small pleasures even during tough days.

Christmas Eve and Christmas morning can present unique challenges for parents, even if those challenges come in unexpected forms. The speaker in this conversation woke up at 2:30 AM on Christmas morning with a terrible headache and was unable to get back to sleep. Despite only getting 3.5 hours of sleep, she chose to power through the day and make the most of it. She also shared her enjoyment of the early morning hours with her children, cherishing the special moments that come with being a parent during the holiday season. Despite her rough start to the day, the speaker found solace in small pleasures, such as watching a documentary about the Yorkshire Ripper that she had been meaning to finish. She acknowledged the importance of embracing the unexpected and making the most of each moment, even when those moments don't go as planned. The conversation also touched on the annoyance of being wished a "good morning" too early in the day, highlighting the unique rhythms and challenges of family life during the holiday season.

    • Embracing emotions and cherishing memories during the holidaysThe essence of Christmas is in the emotions and memories created with loved ones, not the material aspects.

Despite the unique challenges and disappointments that come with unexpected circumstances, like a pandemic or a long night watching documentaries, the essence of Christmas lies in the emotions and memories created with loved ones. Josh and Biggs shared stories of their unconventional and exhausting Christmas experiences, but they also acknowledged the importance of embracing emotions and cherishing the little moments that make the holiday special. From the nostalgia of childhood memories to the unexpected tears brought on by a classic film, the true spirit of Christmas transcends the material aspects and focuses on the connections and feelings shared among family and friends.

    • Maintaining the magic of Christmas for kidsEffort put into creating special moments for loved ones can lead to priceless memories. Perseverance and preparation pay off.

Christmas day, despite the exhaustion and small mishaps, can still bring immense joy and excitement for children. The father in this conversation went to great lengths to maintain the magic of Christmas for his kids, even if it meant enduring physical labor and late-night trampoline assembly. His dedication paid off in the form of their uncontainable delight when they discovered the surprise trampoline. The experience served as a reminder that the effort put into creating special moments for loved ones can lead to priceless memories. Additionally, the father's unexpected success on the game show Catchphrase showcased the importance of perseverance and the power of being well-prepared.

    • Creative ways to make the most of the holiday seasonPeople found joy in simple pleasures and maintained connections with loved ones despite lockdown restrictions, sharing opinions on TV shows and reminiscing about traditions.

Despite the limitations and unexpected challenges during the holiday season, people found creative ways to make the most of their time and maintain connections with loved ones. The discussion reveals a shared experience of watching TV shows, some unexpected and inappropriate for children, and the longing for traditional holiday activities that have been disrupted due to the ongoing lockdown. Rob shared his disappointment over missing out on Catchphrase and expressed his desire for Jordan Banjo to win to make his own victory look better. They also reminisced about other TV shows and shared their opinions on documentaries and mockumentaries. Despite the restrictions, they found joy in simple pleasures like playing golf and visiting heritage sites. The conversation also highlighted the importance of staying informed about the rules and regulations during the lockdown to ensure safety and compliance. Overall, the conversation showcases the importance of finding joy in the little things and staying connected with loved ones, even during challenging times. It also highlights the power of shared experiences and the ability to find humor and enjoyment in unexpected situations.

    • Exploring an anonymous helpline or podcast segment for sharing frustrations about difficult parentsSpeakers discussed creating an anonymous helpline or podcast segment for parents to share frustrations about other challenging parents at their children's nursery or school, providing catharsis for listeners through a jingle and venting sessions.

During the discussion, the speakers explored the idea of an anonymous helpline or email where parents could share their frustrations about other difficult parents at their children's nursery or school. This idea came up during a conversation about running into acquaintances in public places during the pandemic and the potential risks of contracting COVID-19. The speakers also brainstormed the concept of a podcast feature where they could vent about these frustrating parents and channel the anger for the listeners' catharsis. They also discussed the possibility of creating a jingle for the segment and decided to start it when they resume their podcast in the new year. Additionally, they mentioned their previous charitable donation to the Trussell Trust and expressed their gratitude for the generous response from their listeners.

    • Reflecting on the past year and looking forward to the futureEven in challenging times, there's potential for growth and positivity. Reflect on lessons learned and look forward to opportunities ahead.

Even in a challenging year, good things can still emerge. This was a sentiment expressed during the final episode of the year in a podcast discussion. The hosts reflected on the year's events and looked forward to the future, with plans for best-of episodes and new content starting in late January. Despite the difficulties, they remained optimistic and found value in the experiences of the past year. It's a reminder that even in tough times, there is always the potential for growth and positivity. So, as we approach the end of the year, let's take a moment to reflect on the lessons learned and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.

    3239 The Bow of Traditions

    3239 The Bow of Traditions

No one likes the feeling of being overwhelmed and always feeling like they are chasing life. During this holiday season, don't try too hard. Instead, tie a few ribbons on your gifts; the bow of traditions.

The holiday season is filled with joy, love, and the excitement of creating lasting memories with our families.

However, it can also be a time when parents feel overwhelmed by the numerous obligations and expectations that come with the holidays.

Sometimes it's so crazy that in all honesty, we just want to be alone.

But if you have the blessing of a family, then make it count this holiday season and create traditions that are meaningful to your family.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Embrace disruptive thinking!

Here are three things parents can do to weave the bow of traditions without feeling bogged down.

    1. Simplify: When it comes to holiday traditions, less is often more. Instead of trying to squeeze in every activity and event, take a step back and prioritize what truly matters to your family. Choose a few key traditions that align with your values and bring joy to everyone involved. By simplifying, you can create space for meaningful moments without feeling overwhelmed.

"The magic of traditions lies not in their quantity, but in their quality. Choose the traditions that resonate with your family, and let them shine bright." ~ Kristianne Wargo

For example, instead of aiming for a fully decked-out home, focus on a few treasured decorations that hold sentimental value. Rather than attending every holiday event, select one or two special outings that everyone looks forward to. By streamlining your holiday activities, you can savor each tradition and be fully present in the moment.

    2. Recruit: Creating traditions should be a collaborative effort that involves all family members. Encourage open dialogue and brainstorming sessions where each person can contribute their ideas and wishes. This not only ensures that everyone feels included and invested in the traditions but also lightens the load of planning and organizing on the parents.

For instance, hold a family meeting before the holiday season begins. During this meeting, each person gets a chance to suggest a tradition they would like to incorporate. From choosing a new recipe for a special holiday meal to deciding on an outdoor activity, everyone's ideas are considered and discussed. This inclusive approach not only brings the family closer but also shares the responsibility of creating traditions among all its members.

    3. Tie it up with Joy: Many magical moments can be created through simple and heartfelt traditions. Let go of unrealistic expectations and tie the bow on the tradition. Focus on activities that bring genuine joy and allow for deeper connections. Remember that it's the quality of the experience that matters, not the extravagance.

"Simplicity is the key that unlocks the spirit of traditions. It's in the little moments that the true magic resides."

Consider incorporating small but meaningful traditions, such as reading holiday stories by the fireplace, having a movie night with beloved classic films, or engaging in acts of kindness as a family. These simple gestures can create timeless memories and strengthen the bonds within your family.

"The Bow of Traditions" by Kristianne Wargo

In a world of constant motion and change,

Where time slips by, our memories rearranged,

There lies a gift that ties our hearts together,

A bow of traditions we'll cherish forever.

With each passing year, the tapestry grows,

Weaving threads of love, every story it knows,

From bedtime tales whispered in the night,

To shared laughter around the fire's warm light.

The bow of traditions, a treasure unique,

A bond that strengthens, never to weaken,

Through seasons and holidays, it's our guide,

Creating moments we'll forever keep inside.

From holiday baking, flour in the air,

To giving back, showing others we care,

    Simplifying, prioritizing what truly matters,

With family, these traditions our hearts flatter.

    As I once wisely proclaimed,

"In the traditions we share, deep love is ingrained."

For it's not the grandness, but in the simple things,

That the bow of traditions true happiness brings.

So let us gather, hand in hand,

Creating memories that forever will expand,

With each new chapter written in our story,

The bow of traditions, an everlasting glory.

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"

    The Year in Good News

    The Year in Good News

A few weeks ago, we put a callout on The Daily, asking people to send in their good news from a particularly bleak year.

The response was overwhelming. Audio messages poured into our inboxes from around the world, with multiple emails arriving every minute. There was a man who said that he had met Oprah and realized he was an alcoholic, a woman who shared that she had finally found time to finish a scarf after five years and another man who said he had finished his thesis on representations of horsemanship in American cinema. Eventually, we decided to construct the entire show out of these messages.

This episode is the result — a Daily holiday card of good news, from our team to you.

    2941 More of We

    2941 More of We

Life can get in the way of loving those closest to us, especially our spouses. So instead of hiding in our busyness and floundering more in someone else's highlight reel, make a commitment to more of we.

How much time do you spend with your spouse?

Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. https://createyournow.mn.co

And would you say that you spend less time together now than when you got married?

Most of us have to really stop and think when we see our sweethearts. And as for the time, what time is it again?

The number one relationship, if you're married, is your spouse.

But very quickly, we find other ways to occupy our time, distract our attention, and lead us down a rabbit hole in our own homes.

It just does not seem fair to anyone!

Yet you live it every day. You get up and do YOUR thing and forget that there's someONE in your life. You take care of the children, because you have to. But the rest is left to fend for themselves.

How can any marriage be awesome if that's a typical every day?

What if you would make time for each other?

What if there was more of we?

The K.I.S.S. ~ More of WE!

My goal here is to get you thinking about how you spend TIME with your spouse.

Are you showing up with your best self, or is your spouse getting the leftovers?

"Leftovers are great for food, not so much for love!" ~ Kristianne Wargo

You get out what you put into your marriage. So why not show up with enthusiasm? Why not give more when you don't receive? Why not have compassion during challenges in life? Why not be together more than you are apart?

It's hard to build a strong foundation in marriage if you're not together. Logistics do matter.

I want to encourage you to analyze your time with your spouse.

    1. How much time do you spend together in bed?
    2. How much time do you spend as a couple awake and interacting?
    3. How much time do you spend talking about life, not just kids and career?

Then from there, you'll be able to see what is happening regarding time.

    Is time on your side?

Assuming that you fall into "most of us," then you can make some tweaks to how you hang out together. The way you spend your time together matters!

QUESTION: What can you do differently to add time to love?

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"
