    Podcast Summary

    • Entrepreneurship and Mental Health: A Necessary CombinationEntrepreneurs must prioritize mental health, as neglecting it can lead to productivity issues and overall well-being. Dan Murray, a serial entrepreneur, created Heights, a brain care company, after experiencing chronic insomnia and recognizing the importance of mental health care.

Entrepreneurship and taking care of mental health go hand in hand. Dan Murray, a serial entrepreneur and co-founder of Heights, a brain care company, shares his personal experience of chronic insomnia and how it led him to create a business focused on brain care. He highlights the importance of recognizing the need for mental health care as essential as physical health care. The brain, like other body parts, shrinks after the age of 25, and neglecting it can lead to detrimental effects. The business was born out of Dan's personal desire to help himself and others take care of their brains. It's crucial for entrepreneurs to prioritize mental health and understand that neglecting it can lead to productivity issues and overall well-being. Building a brand in a new category, like brain care, requires creating a conversation around the importance of taking care of mental health every day.

    • Anxiety and Panic Attacks in EntrepreneurshipEntrepreneurs and those focused on the future may overlook their biological needs, leading to anxiety and panic attacks. A holistic approach to mental and brain health, including nutrition and supplements, can be effective.

Entrepreneurship and focusing on the future can lead to anxiety, and in some cases, even crippling panic attacks. The speaker shares their personal experience of chronic anxiety and panic attacks, which they distinguished from generalized anxiety. They tried various methods to improve their sleep and mental health, including therapy, sleep therapy, and meditation apps. However, they eventually sought help from a dietitian who suggested addressing the biological side of their insomnia through nutrition and supplements. The speaker was initially skeptical but found the dietitian's advice to be insightful and effective. The takeaway is that entrepreneurs and individuals who focus extensively on the future may neglect their biological needs and overlook the importance of a holistic approach to mental and brain health.

    • Creating a trusted supplement brandThe founder of Heights built trust by offering authentic, high-quality supplements, being honest with customers, and designing a bottle to help form habits.

The supplement industry has a major trust issue due to misleading marketing claims and a lack of consumer awareness about the difference between marketing doses and scientifically proven doses. The founder of Heights, inspired by this discovery, saw an opportunity to create a trusted brand by offering authentic, high-quality supplements designed to improve brain health. The key to building a loved and trusted brand, according to the founder, is to be honest with customers and even recommend against your products if they don't need them. Additionally, the design of the Heights bottle was innovated to help consumers form habits by keeping the supplement out of sight and out of mind. The supplement industry faces the challenge of building long-term habits, as many people buy supplements and then forget to take them regularly. The founder's personal experience with forgetting to take his own medication inspired this design solution.

    • Standing out in a crowded marketTo succeed in a competitive market, focus on education, positivity, and building a strong brand identity instead of just competing on price or fear tactics.

Starting a business in a crowded market requires a unique brand and approach to stand out. The founders of BrainCare discovered this when they entered the market of brain health supplements, competing against established pharmaceutical companies. They identified the need to build awareness for their brand and differentiate themselves by focusing on education and positivity rather than fear. The process of coming up with the idea involved intensive brainstorming and validation, which led them to mental health and physical products as their focus area. The success of their business depends on effectively communicating their unique value proposition and building a strong brand identity.

    • Assuming All the Answers: A Costly Mistake in EntrepreneurshipSeeking advice and learning from others is crucial for entrepreneurs to avoid costly mistakes. Humility and self-reflection are important in the face of failure.

Overestimating one's own knowledge and underestimating the value of seeking advice from others can lead to costly mistakes in entrepreneurship. The speaker, who had a successful but ultimately failed fashion app called Grabble, shares how he assumed he had all the answers due to external validation and praise. He sought advice from investors and those around him, but failed to recognize that they didn't necessarily have the answers either. The speaker later realized the importance of delegating and asking better questions, as well as seeking advice from those with real-world experience. He also learned the value of self-reflection and humility in the face of failure. Despite the humiliation of his business failure, the speaker believes he recovered as a credible entrepreneur due to his experiences and the lessons he learned. Overall, the speaker emphasizes the importance of seeking advice and learning from others, rather than trying to have all the answers oneself.

    • From Success to Humiliation and BackEntrepreneurship requires resilience, humility, and a willingness to help others and adapt to new transitions. Paying it forward and letting go of what no longer serves you are crucial for personal growth.

Success and failure are part of the journey for entrepreneurs, and it's essential to help others along the way. The speaker shared their experience of having a successful business in the UK, which brought them to Buckingham Palace, but eventually led to humiliation and starting from scratch. Despite the setbacks, they remained consistent in their belief of "paying it forward" and helping others. They also emphasized the importance of understanding transitions in life and letting go of what no longer serves you to become who you can be. The speaker's decision to focus on CleanCo led to giving up their excessive drinking habit. Overall, the journey of entrepreneurship requires resilience, humility, and a willingness to help others and adapt to new transitions.

    • Realizing the need for self-improvement to reach full potentialMaking difficult sacrifices and stepping out of comfort zones are crucial for personal growth and achieving significant goals. Discovering intrinsic motivation can lead to a profound transformation.

Personal growth and achieving significant goals often require making difficult sacrifices and stepping out of comfort zones. The speaker shares his experience of being a high-functioning alcoholic who realized he needed to make a change to reach his full potential. He emphasizes that everyone should do what makes them happy, but if one aspires to build a brand, create meaningful change, or pursue entrepreneurship, it's essential to prioritize self-improvement and be at your best consistently. The speaker also mentions that intrinsic motivation cannot be taught, but once discovered, it can lead to a profound transformation in one's life. Lastly, the speaker discusses how he thrives on chaos and finds moments of calm and serenity unsettling, which highlights the importance of understanding individual preferences and working styles.

    • Embracing challenges and finding silver linings in entrepreneurshipEntrepreneurs thrive on challenges, believe in their business, and find opportunities for growth despite setbacks. Different approaches exist, with some focusing on long-term strategy.

Entrepreneurs thrive on both the good and the bad experiences in their business journey. The speaker shares how they feel most alive when faced with challenges and making immediate decisions. However, they've learned over time to stay calm and focused on fixing problems with minimal damage, rather than dwelling on emotions or potential negative outcomes. They emphasize the importance of maintaining belief in the business and finding silver linings. The speaker also mentions that different entrepreneurs have varying approaches, with some preferring a more strategic, long-term perspective. They share an example of their upcoming product, a Smart Probiotic, which affects mood and brain health, highlighting the connection between gut health and mental wellbeing. Overall, the speaker values the excitement and importance of continuous improvement and growth in their entrepreneurial endeavors.

    • Improving products through research and customer feedbackPatiently build an engaged audience, stay informed about scientific discoveries, and prioritize high-quality outcomes to succeed as an entrepreneur.

This entrepreneur's company prides itself on continuously improving its product through scientific research and customer feedback, taking the necessary time to ensure a high-quality outcome. They started as a weekly newsletter to build an audience and gain valuable insights. The entrepreneur also expressed a strong interest in the potential impact of psychedelics on mental health, acknowledging the societal stigma but believing that education and understanding will be key to embracing the future of this field. Patience, building an engaged audience, and staying informed about scientific discoveries are crucial lessons for entrepreneurs. The entrepreneur's long-term goal is to bring a second product to market and potentially explore the psychedelic space.

    • Approaching experiences and investments wiselyUnderstand the potential risks and benefits of substances and investments, invest in learning, and seek motivated entrepreneurs for positive change

The way we approach experiences, both in terms of mindset and environment, can significantly impact their outcome. Regarding psychedelics, while there is promising evidence of their benefits, it's essential to acknowledge their potential risks. As a trusted brand, Heights discusses the science behind substances like alcohol and sugar, encouraging sensible choices for brain health. The consumer's journey and intrinsic motivation are crucial in making positive changes. Investing, much like experiencing, requires understanding the category, learning, and looking for humble entrepreneurs.

    • Balancing instinct and learning from othersSuccessful investing requires a balance between trusting your instincts, understanding the people behind the business, and being open to learning from experts in the field.

Successful investing involves a balance between instinct and learning from others. The speaker shares his personal experience of being skeptical about investing in businesses similar to his past failures, but emphasizes the importance of understanding the people behind the business and their passion and determination. He also stresses the importance of being open to learning from experts in the field and recognizing the limits of one's own knowledge. The speaker also touches upon the importance of having a strong drive and determination to see the business through, even in the face of challenges. Overall, the key takeaway is that successful investing requires a combination of instinct, passion, and a willingness to learn from others.

093 Stop making excuses and take action!

This episode is all about ditching excuses and taking charge.

I share the common reasons for not getting things done, like blaming past circumstances, the lucky fortunes of others and not having time. I challenge you to check how much time you spend on distractions like social media (hint: you do have time).

Success is in your hands, so hold yourself accountable.

Skipping work today leads to a habit of not showing up. I encourage waking up with a positive mindset every day and building the life you want. Excuses just get in the way.

So, you want to grow your business?

    Focus on the important tasks:

    • Focus on the high-income generation tasks

    • Stop getting involved in jobs you employ people to do

    • Post on social media

    • Check your finances

    • Call customers who have contacted you in the past month – you’ll have 5 customers right there

Stop making excuses and filling your day with small tasks. It’s avoiding the big task that will make the most difference.

Have a listen and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

    Take care, everyone.

    087 Interview: Amy Rowlinson

    087 Interview: Amy Rowlinson

Welcome to this episode of the Fail Forward podcast.

In this slightly different episode, I am interviewed by Amy Rowlinson, podcaster, coach and podcasting mentor.

Over the next 40 minutes, Amy asks what made me set up my own podcast, why the topic of failure and my plans for the future.

The first question was an easy answer, Amy is who I have to thank for setting up my podcast.

When I shared the idea of the podcast with her I said I was planning to launch it in a couple of years. Amy responded, “No, you’re going to do this now because it’s the best time” and she was right. From there, she helped me build this podcast and get my the message out to thousands of people.

Amy has been on the podcast previously, where she spoke about how she went from being an unfulfilled employee to a purpose-led coach, mentor and podcaster. Today she helps others align their lives with their values and create exciting mid-life beginnings.

She shares my passion for personal growth and has a fearless approach to embracing change. When Amy asked why the topic of failure, I took a deep dive into my story knowing I was speaking to someone who shares my belief about failing forward.

As many of you know, my business failed a few years ago and I lost everything. I only got through it with support from my family and friends.

It was at that point I read the book ‘Black Box Thinking’ and had an epiphany moment where I realised my failure didn’t have to define the rest of my life.

From then on, I removed my worries about failure. I’m open to trying new things and accept that I don’t need to get everything right the first time around. I truly believe this mindset helped me rebuild my business and achieve success as an entrepreneur.

Amy asks my vision for the future which is to create financial freedom for my family. From there, my dream is to have freedom and money to be able to help people in need.

When I was in my dark place, I went to groups and there were lots of people like me who had families, jobs, and houses and they took a couple of wrong turns and ended up on the streets. The only difference was that they didn’t have support from their loved ones.

I’d love to start a halfway house because I think people who suffer from addiction have similar traits to entrepreneurs. I’d be helping get people off the streets and get them onto the next stage. So that’s my master plan over the next few years!

This episode will leave you inspired to embrace intelligent risks and open yourself up to the possibility of failure.

009 Winging It V Self Development

009 Winging It V Self Development

Welcome to episode 9 of the Fail Forward podcast.

In my early, boom days as a business owner I often joked about the fact I was ‘winging it’. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t blagging it. I was emulating people in my industry who seemed to have it nailed. I was jumping in at the deep end, working things out as I went along and failing forward.

Until I couldn’t any longer. I learned the hard way, winging it is not sustainable!

When my ability to successfully wing it ran out I turned to a business coach, Jeff Shrimpton. Quickly identifying that I had fallen into the hero trap that affects so many business owners, he recommended I read, One minute manager meets the monkey by Hal Burrows, Ken Blanchard, and William Oncken.

“I don’t do reading” was the most telling statement I could have made. I had closed my mind to learning.

If you’ve listened to previous episodes you’ll already know I’ve radically changed my mindset and am now an avid learner. Books, courses, mentoring, mastermind events - I’m hungrier for knowledge and learning opportunities now than at any other time in my life.

Whilst that shift came too late to save the business, it’s helped my recovery and is the reason I have four (and counting) growing businesses that are all far more robust than my first ever was.

In this episode I explore the importance of striking the right balance between winging it and self development. If you don’t, and are too busy getting your ducks in a perfect row, you will miss opportunities. Balancing learning and winging it empowers you to gain traction and achieve success faster.

After all, if you aren’t trying, finding points of failure and overcoming them, are you really moving forward?
