    Podcast Summary

    • Famous parents share their parenting strugglesJoin Rob Beckett and Josh Widdecombe each week as they chat with famous parents about their relatable experiences and share their own tales of parenting woe, providing support and connection for all parents.

Parenting comes with its fair share of challenges and uncertainty, and it's comforting to know that even famous parents face the same struggles. Rob Beckett and Josh Widdecombe, hosts of the Parents in Hell podcast, invite listeners to join them each week as they chat with famous parents about their experiences and share their own tales of parenting woe. The podcast, sponsored by Shopify, aims to provide support and relatability to parents at all stages of their journey. During this episode, they discussed a listener's recording of her 25-month-old daughter saying their names for the first time, and shared a humorous story about identifying the health of their cats. The listener, Emily, expressed her appreciation for the podcast and its honest portrayal of the realities of parenthood. The hosts also shared their own experiences, including Josh's recent concern about one of his cats and Rob's return to stand-up comedy. Overall, the podcast provides a space for parents to connect, laugh, and find comfort in the shared experiences of raising a family.

    • Navigating Family Traditions and Personal ExhaustionSpeaker discusses feeling overwhelmed by family traditions and early morning activities, expresses discomfort with matching clothes, shifts to comedy, shares experiences in competitive swimming, and questions the value of personal commitments.

The speaker is feeling overwhelmed and exhausted from various commitments, including family traditions and early morning activities for his children. He also expressed his discomfort with matching clothes and shared an experience of seeing a couple wearing mismatched but coordinating outfits. The conversation then shifted to comedy and the speaker's upcoming gig, mentioning a venue with unpleasant toilets. Despite his exhaustion, he was trying to prepare new jokes for the performance. The speaker also shared his past experiences with competitive swimming and questioned the value of dedicating time to a sport without significant financial rewards. Overall, the conversation touched upon themes of family, traditions, exhaustion, and the value of personal commitments.

    • Encourage children to find the right sport based on interests and abilitiesFind sports that align with children's interests and abilities for personal growth and potential rewards, avoiding sports like rugby due to confusion and discomfort for spectators.

Parents should encourage their children to engage in sports they genuinely enjoy, such as tennis or golf for potential earning opportunities or swimming for personal satisfaction. The speaker shared his dislike for rugby due to its lack of clarity and potential discomfort for spectators. If a child were to excel in a sport to a professional level, the speaker would prefer indoor sports like chess or dance over rugby due to the confusion and physical discomfort associated with the latter. The speaker also shared memories of his own rugby experiences in school, which he found terrifying and uninspiring. He emphasized the importance of mindset and motivation in sports, criticizing the way some children were treated, particularly those with asthma. Overall, the speaker's perspective highlights the importance of finding the right sport for a child based on their interests and abilities, rather than forcing them into a sport just because of its popularity or potential rewards.

    • Clever Cat Escapes from Locked RoomAlways double-check all potential escape routes when securing a pet to prevent unexpected and stressful situations.

Securing a pet in a room may not be as simple as it seems, especially when dealing with clever and resourceful animals. A cat, in this case, managed to escape from a locked bedroom by climbing out of an open top window on the first floor. This unexpected event caused a significant amount of stress and inconvenience for the pet owner, who was preparing to take the cat to the vet due to its apparent illness. This experience serves as a reminder to double-check all potential escape routes when trying to contain a pet, even if it seems secure. The importance of being vigilant and proactive in pet care cannot be overstated.

    • Taking breaks is essential for maintaining energy and focusPrioritize rest during long drives or late nights to improve focus and performance, and avoid pushing through exhaustion.

Prioritizing rest and self-care, even during long drives or late nights, is crucial for maintaining energy and focus, both for the individual and for those around them. The speaker shared an experience of a long drive home from a gig, where the driver, despite his exhaustion, stopped at a service station for a brief rest instead of pushing through. This decision allowed the speaker to catch up on sleep and arrive home refreshed, demonstrating the importance of taking breaks and listening to one's body. Additionally, the speaker mentioned the challenge of driving long distances overnight and the importance of having something to keep the mind engaged, such as music or podcasts. Overall, the conversation emphasized the value of prioritizing rest and self-care, even in demanding situations, to ensure optimal performance and well-being.

    • Navigating Life's Chaos: Finding Joy in the EverydayAmidst life's demands and unexpected events, finding joy in the simple moments can bring relaxation and appreciation.

Life can be overwhelming with its constant demands and unexpected events. The speaker shares an experience of a bustling neighborhood sale, where everyone sells items outside their homes. Amidst this chaos, he expresses feeling drained from a busy week and an upcoming one. He uses humor to describe his packed schedule, including appointments, meetings, and recording sessions. Despite the challenges, he looks forward to moments of relaxation, such as an anniversary dinner and spending time with his kids. The speaker also reflects on his children's experiences, sharing a story about his youngest daughter's apprehension about wearing glasses to school. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of finding joy in the everyday and appreciating the simple moments amidst life's complexities.

    • Navigating life's challenges with childrenChildren must learn to handle their own emotions and navigate life's challenges, while parents can provide support and guidance.

As a parent, you want to protect your children from the harsh realities of life, but ultimately, you cannot shield them from every challenge or negative comment. Life will present them with situations where they must learn to deal with people's reactions and handle their own emotions. The speaker shared an experience of taking her daughter to school, where she was self-conscious about wearing glasses. The teacher's assistance helped her daughter settle in, but the mother was overwhelmed with emotion, reliving her own childhood experiences of feeling different. It's a difficult lesson to accept, but an essential one - children must learn to navigate their way through life, and parents must allow them to do so. Additionally, the speaker reflected on the small everyday challenges that can feel daunting, such as getting a haircut or wearing a hat, and how these experiences can transport us back to our own childhoods.

    • Siblings and Childhood ChallengesSiblings bring joy and challenges, early successes can put pressure, and maintaining relationships can be difficult as children grow older. Encourage positive interactions and provide opportunities for bonding.

Popularity and coolness factors in childhood can be fleeting and meaningless, much like scoring a goal early in a game can put unnecessary pressure on the rest of the match. Additionally, having siblings can bring both joy and challenges, and the logistics of managing multiple extracurricular activities for children can be overwhelming. As children grow older, maintaining their relationships can become more difficult, and the number of siblings can make regular meet-ups challenging. Siblings may not have much in common, and it can be a struggle to keep them engaged with each other as they grow up. Despite these challenges, it's important to encourage positive interactions between siblings and provide opportunities for them to bond, as these relationships can have long-lasting impacts on their lives.

    • Supporting a local football club strengthens family bondsSupporting a local football club can foster long-term family connections and introduce children to new experiences, despite initial challenges.

Supporting a local football club can help build long-term bonds between family members. The speaker and his brother both support Plymouth Argyle, and they've introduced the sport to their children. However, they encountered some challenges, like ill-fitting football boots and difficulty teaching their kids how to tie laces. Despite these hurdles, the children are enjoying their football experience and have even discovered new music tastes, such as Kasabian. The speaker also shared his personal dislike for Kasabian, sparking a friendly disagreement. In the end, the family's football journey continues, with its ups and downs, and the children's enthusiasm for the sport bringing them closer together.

    • Balancing Parenting and School RulesParents need to adapt to school rules and balance their own needs with their children's, even if it means making small sacrifices.

Even though parents are constantly on the go, trying to balance work, school, and extracurricular activities, it's important to take a break and let others help out sometimes. The parents in this discussion had a spa party for their kids, but when they returned to school, they were reminded of the rules against tattoos and painted nails. Despite their exhaustion, they realized they needed to adjust to the school's rules and remove their children's nail polish. Later, at the park, they saw the joy of letting someone else take charge and spin their kids on a swing. The parents also shared an unexpected encounter with Shania Twain, and while the husband was initially dismissive of her music, he later appreciated the opportunity to meet her. Overall, the experience served as a reminder to take time for themselves and accept help from others, even in small ways.

    • A relaxed concert experience in a box seating arrangementBox seating at concerts offers flexibility, larger seating capacity, and a friendly atmosphere, allowing for a unique and enjoyable concert experience

Attending a concert in a box seating arrangement is a more relaxed experience than traditional seating. The seating arrangement is first come, first served, and the seats are not strictly assigned. Boxes typically have a larger seating capacity than the number of tickets sold, allowing for flexibility and seating adjustments. During the author's experience, they encountered Cara Delevingne and her group in their box, leading to a minor disagreement over seating. However, the overall atmosphere was friendly and accommodating, with attendees encouraged to sit with their groups and find suitable seating. Despite the long night and the desire to hear specific songs, the author and their friend ultimately enjoyed the concert and the unique experience of attending in a box.

    • Prioritizing connections over luxury or statusSpeaker moved to sit with friends instead of proximity to celeb, emphasizing the value of relationships over material comforts or fame

Sometimes, the desire to be close to friends and comfort outweighs the desire for luxury or celebrity proximity. During an event, a speaker found herself seated away from her friends due to seating arrangements, but instead of arguing, she opted to move to the back of the room where she could sit with them. Cara Delevingne, the celebrity in question, was seen bringing her own Angostura bitters to make her Manhattan, a detail that amused the speaker. Despite the potential for paparazzi attention, the speaker felt no affinity with Delevingne's serious and self-sufficient vibe. The speaker also mentioned that her podcast, "Parenting In Hell," is now available everywhere for free. This anecdote highlights the importance of prioritizing connections with loved ones over perceived luxuries or status symbols.

    • Two women using creativity to make learning fun and memorableSusan Lucas started Memory Owls to sell times table books and quirky characters, while Lisa Hunter created Oh My Goodnight to sell academic planners and revision materials, both aiming to enhance children's learning experience

Parents and educators are continually seeking innovative ways to engage children in learning, particularly in areas like memorization of times tables. Susan Lucas, a mother and entrepreneur, identified this need and started a business, Memory Owls, offering a book, videos, and quirky characters to make learning times tables fun and memorable for visually-oriented children. Her goal has shifted from making money to spreading the word about her product. Meanwhile, Lisa Hunter, a former English teacher, left the classroom to create a business selling academic planners, calendars, and revision materials to help students manage their workload and prioritize their mental health. Both women demonstrate the entrepreneurial spirit and the drive to make a difference in education. These stories remind us of the importance of creativity, resilience, and the desire to improve the learning experience for children. Whether it's through storytelling or practical tools, these women are making a significant impact in their communities. #008 Off the Pitch with Active: Interview with Michael Matricciani, Australian College of Sport Football-Director of Coaching, FFSA U17 Girls Head Coach

Today I welcome Michael Matricciani back to Off the Pitch with Active for a 2nd time. This episode was recorded back Jan 2018 when he was the owner of Soccajoeys, a non-competitive football program for 2.5-8-year old’s.

We are now in May ’18 and he recently sold it after 5 years as the Owner/Director so he could focus more on his coaching and his promotion as Australian College of Sport Football-Coaching Director.

It is an absolute pleasure for me to announce that Michael Matricciani has also put his hand up for involvement in the Yellow for Yelling Awareness and Educational program for parents with children in sport.

His experience is comprehensive; Ex professional player (including U20 young Socceroos & U23 Olyroos), 3 years as Technical Director of CCSC, 5 years as Director/Owner of Soccajoeys and current ACS Football-Director of Coaching. He is also FFSA U17 (NTC) Girls Head Coach, developing players for future Matilda’s (for non-Australian listeners Matilda’s is the Australia Women’s National Football Team, who currently is ranked 6 in the world by FIFA.

Combine this experience with his coaching qualification including AFC/FFA A License plus FFA instructor and other certified courses, Michael will help raise awareness of the Yellow for Yelling program amongst higher level coaches and educators.

I got so excited when he offered to get involved so I began searching for this coming interview. It was recorded back in Jan ’18, when we had a chat about Soccajoeys and setting up the foundation for a successful life by providing a safe learning environment in sport.

It is a great podcast and it will touch your heart if you are coaching kids or are a parent with a younger child.
