The interview covers a range of topics and is not just for UFC fans. Overall, Parenting Hell provides a space for parents to connect and share their experiences, reminding us that we're all in this together and none of us really know what we're doing.

    • Balancing Family Life and Performing: A Complex IssueExperts and enthusiasts don't label themselves as 'aficionados', and balancing family life and performing is a complex issue with guilt and pressure.

Even those who are considered experts or aficionados in certain areas don't always see themselves that way. During a conversation about gigging and touring, it was mentioned that no one identifies as a "gigaficionado" or an "UFC aficionado," but rather uses the term to describe their level of interest to others. The discussion then shifted to the challenges of balancing family life and performing, with the consensus being that it's not easy to juggle both, especially during a tour. The guilt of missing bath times and other family moments was a common theme, but there was also a sense of enjoyment and love for the job. Ultimately, the conversation highlighted the complexities of balancing personal and professional life, and the importance of finding a way to manage the guilt and pressure that comes with it.

    • Unexpected discoveries from consistent communicationRegular communication can lead to surprising discoveries and potential business opportunities, even among unrelated individuals. Authenticity in communication is crucial to maintain trust and avoid being seen as insincere.

The power of consistent communication can lead to surprising discoveries and potential for new ventures, even among seemingly unrelated individuals. The speakers in this conversation had a weekly conversation about a shared TV show, despite not seeing each other often. They mused about the idea of creating an art center for comedians, and in the process, discovered shared interests and a potential business opportunity. However, the speaker Rob expressed concerns about the authenticity of his past warnings about relationship issues, fearing he might be seen as a "boy who cried wolf." The conversation then shifted to shared experiences of unexpected family dynamics and the stresses of public places like soft play areas. Despite these challenges, the importance of consistent communication and the potential for unexpected discoveries remained a common thread throughout the conversation.

    • The power of unexpected connectionsApproach unfamiliar situations with an open mind, embrace unexpected interactions, and utilize your networks to build connections and solve problems.

First impressions can be misleading, and it's important to approach unfamiliar situations with an open mind and a willingness to engage in conversation. In the discussed scenario, the speaker encountered a man who had mistakenly approached him, assuming they knew each other. Despite their initial confusion, the speaker played along and eventually discovered that they did indeed have a mutual connection. This experience highlights the importance of being receptive to unexpected interactions and the potential rewards that can come from them. Furthermore, the conversation also underscores the impact of memory and the role it plays in our daily lives. The speaker struggled to recall the name of the man's sister, but once he made the connection, he recognized him immediately. This experience serves as a reminder of the power of our memories and the importance of using them to build connections with others. Lastly, the conversation demonstrates the value of seeking help and utilizing our networks to solve problems. The speaker reached out to his brother for assistance in identifying the man, and this ultimately led to the resolution of the situation. This highlights the importance of leaning on our support systems and utilizing the resources available to us when faced with challenges.

    • Raising Twins: A Blur of Constant Stress and Lack of SleepTom Aspinall, a UFC champion, shares his experience of balancing family and career while raising three children, including twins. He emphasizes the challenges of the first year, the importance of a strong support system, and the eventual ease of parenthood.

Having children, especially twins, brings unique challenges that can be overwhelming, especially during the first year of their lives. Tom Aspinall, a UFC heavyweight interim champion, shared his experience of balancing his career and family life while raising three children, including twins. He emphasized that the first year was a blur of constant stress and lack of sleep, making it difficult to remember specific details. Despite facing criticism for not being able to prioritize his family during his early career, Tom persevered and eventually found success in MMA. He encourages parents to embrace the challenges and understand that it gets easier over time. Additionally, Tom's experience highlights the importance of having a strong support system, including friends, family, and community, which can help navigate the ups and downs of parenthood.

    • The Power of Belief and Support from Loved OnesBelief and support from loved ones can significantly impact one's confidence and drive to pursue their goals, even in challenging times. It's essential to respect individual choices and not impose goals upon them.

Having strong support and belief from loved ones can significantly impact one's confidence and drive to pursue their goals, even in the face of adversity. This was evident in the interviewee's journey to becoming a successful fighter. Despite working various jobs to fund his training, he remained focused on his dream due to his father's unwavering belief and encouragement. Now, as a father himself, he ensures his children's involvement in martial arts is their own decision and not imposed upon them. The interviewee's routine as a professional fighter allows him to balance his training with family life, and he emphasizes that there's no special treatment for him compared to those with regular jobs. Overall, the power of belief and support from loved ones can lead individuals to achieve their goals and live a fulfilling life.

    • Nurturing Interests in Martial Arts and Rubik's CubesSupporting children's interests, whether in martial arts or Rubik's cubes, can lead to impressive skills and opportunities for growth. Families play a crucial role in fostering these passions and adapting to unique challenges, such as those presented by autism.

The passion for martial arts and solving Rubik's cubes in the interviewee's family has developed naturally and organically. The children have been influenced by their grandfather and older brother, leading them to express interest and eventually train. This interest has resulted in impressive skills, such as solving Rubik's cubes in under 20 seconds, and even competing at a young age. The interviewee shared that one of their sons, who is not autistic, has become exceptionally skilled at solving Rubik's cubes. The other son, who is autistic, is making progress in mainstream school and starting to learn about the condition. The family is navigating the challenges that come with autism, recognizing that it presents itself differently in each child and requiring ongoing learning and adaptation. The interviewee expressed surprise at the potential monetization opportunities in Rubik's cube competitions and YouTube channels, but was unsure of the extent of professional opportunities in this area. Overall, the family's experiences demonstrate the importance of nurturing children's interests and providing them with opportunities to learn and grow, regardless of any unique challenges they may face.

    • Recognizing developmental concerns early is crucial for children's growthEarly recognition and addressing developmental concerns, like potential autism, is essential for children's well-being. Seek professional help to ensure proper support and understanding of unique needs.

Recognizing and addressing developmental concerns in children, such as potential autism, is crucial for their growth and well-being. Delaying a diagnosis can hinder the provision of personalized support and resources. The speaker's experience of noticing their child's lack of progress in communication and interaction, initially attributing it to lockdowns and twin development, eventually led them to seek professional help. Receiving a diagnosis brought relief and direction, allowing for targeted support and understanding of their child's unique needs. The importance of seeking professional guidance and not relying on personal assumptions or guesses cannot be overstated. Additionally, the speaker's experience of raising three young children during the lockdowns highlighted the challenges and resilience required in such situations.

    • UFC fighter's uncertain journey during the pandemicDespite financial losses and personal challenges, the UFC fighter stayed focused and became a champion, maintaining humility and grounding his family in the process.

The UFC fighter's experience during the pandemic was a rollercoaster ride of uncertainty and financial pressure, but despite the challenges, he managed to stay grounded and focused on his career. He missed his debut due to a canceled event, which meant a significant loss of income and added pressure with three young children to support. However, he bounced back and became the champion within a few years. The unpredictability of the sport and the humility it brings kept him from getting carried away by the fame and wealth. His children watch his fights and remain unbothered by the violence.

    • Fighter and Father: Intertwined RolesThe interviewee finds pride in his roles as a fighter and a father, enjoying the attention and respect from others as a fighter, while remaining emotionally detached during fights to maintain focus. However, when it comes to protecting his kids, he becomes emotionally charged and aggressive.

The interviewee values his role as a tough father figure and finds it cool when his children look up to him due to his fighting career. He enjoys the attention he receives from other kids and parents at school pickups. However, he strives to remain emotionally detached during fights to maintain focus and perform at his best. He believes that emotion can hinder his performance and cause unnecessary exhaustion. Despite his calm demeanor in the octagon, he admits that when it comes to protecting his kids, he can become emotionally charged and aggressive. Overall, the interviewee's identity as a fighter and a father are intertwined, and he takes pride in both roles.

    • Emotionally detaching from personal life for optimal performanceTo perform at your best in high-pressure situations, some people need to emotionally detach from their personal lives and focus solely on the task at hand, reducing distractions and increasing focus.

To perform at your best, especially in high-pressure situations like a live TV show or a fight, some people need to emotionally detach themselves from their personal lives and focus solely on the task at hand. This means blocking out distractions, such as family issues or external noise, to avoid being overwhelmed and making mistakes. For fighters like Tom, this means separating the fighter persona from the husband and father persona during the fight. This detachment allows them to focus solely on their job and the variables involved in their performance, reducing the chances of small distractions becoming major obstacles.

    • Detaching emotionally during a fightFocusing solely on the match and ignoring external distractions is crucial for a fighter's success during a fight, but cherishing family bonds is essential post-fight.

For a fighter, focusing solely on the match and ignoring external distractions, including family and friends, is crucial for success. The fighter in this conversation emphasized the importance of detaching emotionally during a fight to perform at their best. However, post-fight, the real world quickly intrudes, and family, especially fathers who serve as trainers, can be a source of immense pride and joy. Despite occasional disagreements, the fighter cherishes the bond they share with their father and values their guidance. Boxing is deeply ingrained in their family, and conversations about fights are constant. The fighter admits that they would find it challenging to train their son and be in his corner during a fight due to their emotional attachment.

    • Parents' reactions to children's unique passionsSupport children's interests, join in or navigate public spaces carefully, and foster a safe and encouraging environment.

Parents' reactions to their children's unique passions and interests can vary greatly. Some, like the mother in this discussion, are fully supportive and even join in, while others, like Abar, feel uncomfortable and have to navigate public spaces carefully due to their own celebrity status. The Rubik's cube community, for instance, is filled with diverse individuals, ranging from casual enthusiasts to dedicated professionals and their families. The competitions can be intense, with large turnouts and high stakes, but they also foster a sense of camaraderie and shared passion. Ultimately, it's essential for parents to respect their children's interests and provide a safe and encouraging environment for them to explore and grow.

    • Rubik's Cube Champion's Struggle with FameTom, a Rubik's Cube champion, feels overwhelmed by public recognition and finds solace in his family's support during his journey to navigate fame.

The Rubik's Cube champion, Tom, experiences overwhelming attention and feels like being in a crowded room when he's recognized in public. He's still adjusting to the fame and the constant requests for photos and conversations. Tom also shares an intriguing story about his twin boys, mentioning some unexplained instances of twin telepathy when they were young. Despite Tom's success, he's a loving husband and appreciates his wife's support in parenting. He finds her unbelievable and feels lucky to have kids with her. Tom is still new to fame and is learning to navigate it, but he's grateful for the love and encouragement from his family.

    • Wife's Sacrifice and Husband's GratitudeWife's extended breastfeeding enabled husband's rest, husband now seeks equal household contribution, appreciation for wife's awe-inspiring feat, shared interests in MMA and Rubik's cubes

The speaker's wife exhibited incredible mental strength and dedication during their parenting journey by breastfeeding their twins for an extended period of time throughout the night for several months. This sacrifice allowed the speaker to have more rest during the day, but now he feels she should contribute more equally to their household chores. Despite their differences, the speaker expresses gratitude for his wife's efforts and acknowledges the awe-inspiring feat she accomplished. Additionally, the speaker is a successful MMA fighter, known for his composure and talent, and they share an interest in Rubik's cubes.

Turning Autism Around with Mary Barbera

This episode is exciting because I interview one of my closest friends, Dr. Mary Barbera.

Dr. Mary Barbera "fell" into the autism world in 1999 when her first-born son, Lucas, was diagnosed with autism. Since then, Mary has transformed from a confused and overwhelmed parent to a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst and best-selling author. After earning a Ph.D., Mary launched her first online course in early 2015 and later built additional courses and a membership program to help parents and autism professionals.

Mary's book, Turn Autism Around, her online courses, weekly podcast, and social media channels help parents and professionals start turning things around for young children with early signs of autism and older children with an autism diagnosis who are still struggling. In this podcast, Mary talks about her mission to impact 50 million autism-affected children by 2025 and the steps she has taken toward achieving that goal.
