Dr. Steven Radowitz: The keys to longevity, psychedelics and understanding mental health

Dr. Steven Radowitz: The keys to longevity, psychedelics and understanding mental health

    Episode Summary

    Welcome back to the show!

On this episode of The Erica Diamond Podcast, I get up close and person with Dr. Steven Radowitz, internal medicine physician and Chief Medical Officer of Nushama Psychedelic Wellness

We speak about the keys to longevity, psychedelics and understanding mental health.

It's a fascinating conversation, our only issue is this was taken from an Instagram live and we had tech issues throughout where it overlapped our talking. We apologize for this inconvenience.

    In This Episode

    Interview questions:

What excited you about medicine going back, and deciding to specially go into internal medicine?

Let’s talk longevity. I know you are fascinated with how we age, but specifically how to age well. Let’s talk about that. We’ll get to the psychedelics after.

What are things that hinder our longevity?

What are things that help our longevity?

What are psychedelics? And how are they used to treat trauma and addiction. Specifically, how you DO use them to treat your patients? Take us down the journey.

So basically, you are Masha or Nicole Kidman in Nine Perfect Strangers?

How does one know when they would be a good candidate for psychedelics, and which ones? (Ketamine? Mushrooms?)

Let’s talk spirituality - how did you find spiritually, kaballah and course-correct your life?

We have to talk self-care, specially yoga and meditation. I love that you speak so open and freely about self-care as a way to ward off disease and re-align the body. Why is self-care so important?

Let’s talk tending to our mental health

What are some things we can do when we feel overwhelmed or anxious, or like we’re encroaching burnout, which is the reality for many around the globe?

    About Dr. Steven Radowitz

Dr. Steven Radowitz is Chief Medical Officer of Nushama Psychedelic Wellness. Dr. Radowitz has a wealth of experience in treating patients with addictions and seeing firsthand the effects that trauma can have on our physical health.Dr. Radowitz joined Nushama to oversee and develop various treatment modalities because of his belief that psychedelic medicine is the future of mental wellness and that current solutions treat symptoms only and do not address the underlying issues.

Dr. Radowitz has been practicing internal medicine since 1998. He grew up in Montreal Canada (that’s how we know each other, I was close friends with his sister Jen).  He completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Anatomy and Cell biology from McGill University. He then completed his medical degree at The Chicago Medical School and internal medicine residency at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He worked at the St. Vincent’s Midtown medical center in New York City where he worked on the general medicine and HIV/ AIDS units and was medical director of the inpatient alcohol and opiate detox and treatment unit. He was also responsible for teaching medical students and interns.

He then went into private practice in Manhattan, specializing in general medicine and HIV care. He also provided acute care services at the health centers at Merrill Lynch and Goldman Sachs. He currently provides HIV care services for students at Columbia University where he is an assistant clinical professor. Dr. Radowitz currently runs the primary care program at Goldman Sachs and maintains his private practice in Manhattan.

He has been and continues on a spiritual journey through the study of Kabbalah, Jewish mysticism, studied transcendental meditation and various forms of yoga. Dr. Radowitz has a passion for preventive medicine, getting to the true source of disease before it manifests. He sees the source of disease as a dis-ease that results from a misalignment of mind, body and spirit. He sees psychedelic medicine as a powerful tool to help become aware of the origin of this imbalance and guide us on a path to wholeness, health and wellbeing.

Annie, firstly, tell us a little bit about your background, how you grew up, a little bit about what your childhood and teen years were like.

Can you take us back to the time where your drinking went from in check, to not in check? How did you know that line had eroded?

Were you hiding your drinking? I have heard from many women with addiction on my blog over the years, and most of them describe hiding it from their friends or family.

Can you describe the moment you made the decision to get sober? I imagine there were many moments, as alcoholism or any addiction is tricky.

For our listeners who may be teetering on that line, what are some signs your drinking isn’t in check? What advice would you have for women who may be on that slippery slope.

Okay let’s lighten things up. You make moms laugh. Hard! How did that start? Because I am a content creator, I am always curious with how talented people come up with content. Take us through that process.

Tell me about this competition. You are ripped, Annie! What made you decide to do it, and I see you enjoy mustard? Is it hard to be so disciplined?

You’re a married working mom of 4 daughters! How do you juggle it all? Any tips?

Annie, what would u tell your younger self

What’s still on your bucket list?

Glenn Harrold: How Meditation and Hypnotherapy Will Change Your Life for the Better

Glenn Harrold: How Meditation and Hypnotherapy Will Change Your Life for the Better

    Episode Summary

Welcome back to the show! I’ve got to admit, I am a little starstruck by my guest today.

My story with today’s guest dates back to March 2020— COVID 19 virus rears its ugly head. We are brought literally to our knees with global instability, struggling economies, people being hospitalized and even dying alone not able to be surrounded by their loved. Let’s take a moment to realized the trauma we have been living through -it has been a really difficult year.

And despite being a meditation teacher and a meditation student for almost twenty years, I started to struggle a little with sleep at the beginning of coronavirus. As a meditation teacher on Insight Timer myself, and user of the Breethe meditation app, I was familiar with Glenn Harrold’s meditations and hypnotherapies, but when my sleep started to change at the beginning of COVID, I rediscovered Glenn, and consistently, I mean religiously started meditating 7 nights a week without fail to his hynotherapies and meditations before bed.

My sleep became so deep and so restorative that my husband started asking me what was going on, “You close your eyes Erica and you don't even so much as move until the morning!”

    Thank you Glenn!

    In This Episode

    • Take us back to the beginning. How did you find meditation and hypnosis? How did you become interested in this field as your passion and career?
    • What is meditation because many people don't truly understand what it is
    • What are the benefits of having a daily practice?
    • Let's talk about hypnosis. The idea scares many people. What actually is hypnosis and why is it so important to overcome issues that people struggle with - addiction, anxiety, weigh loss, smoking?
    • If someone is feeling stressed or overwhelmed, what are a few things they can start doing now as far as meditation or hypnotherapy? How can anyone start a meditation practice?
    • What’s a few of the most common things you hear about meditation? I know I hear, "I'm not a meditation person," or "I can’t quiet my mind." (What are some misconceptions about meditation?)
    • My girlfriend who is a Glenn groupie asked me to ask you two questions. Number 1, can you do a 963 Hz for the crown chakra? And question 2, will you ever do mini 10-minute meditations for your energy system?
    • Tell us truthfully, do you ever get stressed or anxious? You’re human, so I imagine you do at times, and if so, what do YOU do? I imagine you don't meditate to your own meditations? I don’t meditate to mine.
    • What are you currently reading?
    • When are you at your happiest?
    • Coffee or tea? Netflix or book? Beach or lake?
    • Where can we find your meditations and hynotherapies?

Alon Fishman: Overcoming Anxiety, Depression, Suicidality, and Uniting The World Through Love

Alon Fishman: Overcoming Anxiety, Depression, Suicidality, and Uniting The World Through Love

    Episode Summary

Welcome back to the show. As we approach the closing of Mental Health Awareness Month, today, I have the true privilege of bringing you one of the most compassionate, kind, and intelligent souls I have connected with in a long time.

Alon is very special. He is young, but you will agree that he is wise beyond his 20 years.

I won't give anything away and how Alon finally embraced his sexuality, overcame mental health struggles and is now healing the world through love and vulnerability.

    Let's dive right in!

    In This Episode

    • What was life like for you growing up for you? Give us a sense of your environment?

    • Talk to me about what it was like growing up a gay teen in America. As a society, we have definitely become more progressive, and thank goodness for our world finally embracing that love is love. But I know that you say your dad’s reaction was saddening. And that really hurts my heart. Talk to me about that.

    • This all goes with one of my favourite quotes —"the truth sets you free." I know what struggling in silence and what secrets do to your heart. Talk to me what that felt like when you set your truth free?

    • Perfect time to lead us into vulnerability and what vulnerability does not only for the person, but for us as a society? Can you speak to this?

    • When did you first notice that you were struggling with depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation? What were some of the warning signs?

    • If someone is struggling right now, how can they reach out for help? What would be their first step? What is the first thing someone can do if they are struggling in ways that feel beyond their own control? What would you advise them to do?

    • You’re only 20. What are your plans for this wonderful life?

    • I’m still going to ask you what you would tell your younger self because your soul is mature and I have a feeling you’ve learned a lot.
