"Factory Towns" and their Political Importance

"Factory Towns" and their Political Importance

The guest host for today's show is Brad Bannon. Brad runs Bannon Communications Research, a polling, message development and media firm which helps labor unions, progressive issue groups and Democratic candidates win public affairs and political campaigns. His show, 'Deadline D.C. with Brad Bannon,' airs every Monday from 3-4pm ET.

Brad is first joined by Democratic Strategist Mike Lux to break down a report that Mike co-authored, called "Factory Towns."

As Demlist's Kimberly Scott puts it, the report "reveals how the political parties, and most particularly Democrats, have missed "the biggest electoral earthquake of the last decade" in discounting the significance of a key demographic -- manufacturing-heavy, working-class towns.

The study, produced by American Family Voices and 21st Century Democrats, debunks, in-depth, the conventional premise that there are only three kinds of political turf that matter: the big cities, which are Democratic; rural America, which is Republican; and the suburbs, which is where most of the swing voters are, and therefore where the parties should spend most of their time.

That approach neglects a newly defined, yet long overlooked subset of the American electorate: the Factory Towns. They are the manufacturing-heavy, working-class towns that are not part of huge urban areas, but are not farming-dominated rural counties either.

The Factory Towns Report looks at 853 counties in 10 different Midwest and Great Lakes states, which have lost 1.3 million manufacturing jobs since the beginning of this century -- a decline that has been most damaging to Democrats."

During the second half of the show, Brad leads a political roundtable with Edwith Theogene and Mark Grimaldi. The roundtable discusses Senator Joe Manchin's demands that a key climate provision be dropped from the Senate Democrats infrastructure reconciliation package in order to gain his support for the bill. They also analyze new Gallup polling that shows how involved Americans want the government to be in solving the nation's problems.

Edwith Theogene is the director of advocacy for Generation Progress, the youth engagement arm of American Progress. In this role, Theogene works to develop and lead efforts that translate the experiences of young adults into concrete actions that advance progressive policies and increase voter turnout. Edwith's Twitter handle is @WhoIsEdwith.

Mark Grimaldi has been a progressive political activist for the past 13 years. He volunteered for the campaigns of President Obama (2008 and 2012), Senator Bernie Sanders (2016), Secretary Hillary Clinton (2016), and President Joe Biden (2020). Mark is also involved in campaign finance reform efforts around the country, and philanthropic efforts for Cancer research. His Twitter handle is @MarkJGrimaldi.

What’s Next In The Fight To Protect Undocumented People in the U.S.

Today's guest hosts are Brent J. Cohen and Edwith Theogene, Executive Director and Organizing Director for Generation Progress.

They discuss how Congress has had an extremely busy past few weeks, with Democrats in the House and Senate working to pass a few bills of great importance to the country and President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda. The budget reconciliation bill—which contains many programs and policy solutions from that agenda—is also something that many in the immigration policy and advocacy spaces have been working on in the hope of securing protections for undocumented people living and working in the U.S. While these efforts have encountered some roadblocks thus far, there is still hope of progress being made on that front—both as part of that bill and beyond.

To talk more with Brent and Edwith about efforts to protect undocumented people in the U.S. in recent and coming months, and how people can get involved, they’re joined by two expert guests. They are Nicole Svajlenka, the associate director for research on the Immigration Policy team at the Center for American Progress, and Juliana Macedo do Nascimento, the senior advocacy manager at United We Dream.

Generation Progress' website is GenProgress.org and their Twitter handle is @GenProgress. Brent Cohen's Twitter handle is @BrentJCohen and Edwith Theogene's handle is @WhoIsEdwith. Abortion Rights Under Attack

    Abortion Rights Under Attack

Today's guest hosts are Brent J. Cohen and Charlotte Hancock, Executive Director and Communications Director for Generation Progress.

They discuss how, last week, the Supreme Court allowed a Texas law to take effect that bans abortion after around the sixth week of pregnancy, at which point many people do not even know they are pregnant. This law is devastating for many Texans, particularly for those who cannot afford to travel out of state to access abortion care. It also goes against the established precedent set by Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, leading many to be concerned about the implications of this law for other states across the country.

To talk with Brent and Charlotte about this law, and what can be done to protect abortion rights in Texas and beyond, they’re joined by two expert guests.
They are Jackie Blank, a federal legislative strategist and the Act for Women campaign manager at the Center for Reproductive Rights, and Nancy Cárdenas Peña, the Texas state director for policy and advocacy at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice.

Texas Passes Draconian Abortion and Voter Suppression Laws

Texas Passes Draconian Abortion and Voter Suppression Laws

During this episode, Leslie is joined by Moe Vela, host of "In The Know With Moe," which can be heard and seen all of the same places as the Leslie Marshall Show, each Thursday from 3-4pm ET.
Moe previously served in President Obama’s administration as the Director of Administration and Senior Advisor in the Office of then Vice President Joe Biden.

First, Moe details his most recent entrepreneurial endeavor as the co-creator, co-producer and co-star of the hottest new business reality streaming series, 'Unicorn Hunters.' Moe stars alongside the likes of Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak, former Treasury Secretary Rosie Rios, Musical Superstar and Investor Lance Bass, and several other business titans and luminaries. 'Unicorn Hunters' is on a mission to democratize access to wealth, so that it is no longer the privilege of a select group. 'Unicorn Hunters' allows founders to reach millions of investors around the world, and provides viewers with the opportunity to invest in pre-IPO opportunities. The show just finished taping their second season with six new amazing future unicorns who will impact millions of lives. The show can be seen at UnicornHunters.com.

Second, Leslie and Moe give their takes on two very controversial new Texas laws that passed within the last week.
The first is "the most restrictive abortion law to be enforced since the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion nationwide," according to Axios.
"The Texas law bans all abortions, including in cases of rape and incest, after the detection of cardiac activity, which is usually around six weeks — before many people know they are pregnant.
It also allows individuals to sue anyone suspected of helping a woman obtain an abortion — and awards at least $10,000 to people who do so successfully.
The law is difficult to challenge partly because it's unclear who can be sued since it deputizes private citizens to enforce it."

The second law is the most restrictive voter suppression bill that has passed nationwide. It rolls back early voting and adds new ID requirements, which critics say disproportionately impact voters of color.
Many of the bill's provisions take aim at expansions put in place in the populous, Democratic Harris County, where officials broadened access last year, per the Texas Tribune.
The measure could also make it more difficult for people with disabilities to vote, the Washington Post notes, by creating penalties for people who assist with filling out a ballot.
It requires large Texas counties, that tend to lean Democratic, to livestream ballot counting, the New York Times reports.
The bill has been a top priority for Texas' Republican Governor, Greg Abbott. "Though there is no evidence fraud took place during the 2020 election, Republicans in many states have pushed for new restrictions based on baseless allegations of voter fraud pushed by former President Trump and others," according to Axios.

The final topic that Leslie and Moe discuss is a new joint statement released by editors of over 230 medical journals saying that "Global warming is affecting people's health — and world leaders need to address the climate crisis now as it can't wait until the COVID-19 pandemic is over," according to Axios.
"This is the first time so many publications have come together to issue such a joint statement to world leaders, underscoring the severity of the situation — with the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Lancet and the British Medical Journal among those issuing the warning.
Ahead of this November's UN general assembly and the Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, the journals warned: "The greatest threat to global public health is the continued failure of world leaders to keep the global temperature rise below 1.5C and to restore nature."
"Health is already being harmed by global temperature increases and the destruction of the natural world," states the editorial, which also ran in the New England Journal of Medicine, the International Nursing Review, the Chinese Science Bulletin and Brazil's Revista de Saude Publica.
"Despite the world's necessary preoccupation with COVID-19, we cannot wait for the pandemic to pass to rapidly reduce emissions."
Of note: World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement ahead of the editorial's publication that the "risks posed by climate change could dwarf those of any single disease."
"We will end the COVID-19 pandemic, but there's no vaccine for the climate crisis," Tedros added.
The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said last month global warming could reach 1.5°C (2.7°F) compared to pre-industrial levels by 2030.
"The editorial reports that heat-related mortality among people older than 65 has risen by over 50% in the past 20 years," according to Axios.

Young People and the ‘March On For Voting Rights’

Young People and the ‘March On For Voting Rights’

Today's guest hosts are Edwith Theogene and Emily Leach, Organizing Director and Communications Manager for Generation Progress.

They’ve discussed voting rights a lot on this show over the past year—states across the country have introduced and passed restrictive voting laws that threaten to reduce participation in democracy and meanwhile advocates have pushed Congress to pass federal legislation protecting voting rights.

Two of those bills, the For The People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, have now been passed by the House of Representatives and now face a decision in the Senate. The For The People Act has already met considerable opposition at the Senate level, but Majority Leader Schumer has indicated that passing that bill and the Voting Rights Advancement Act will be priorities once the Senate returns from recess in September.

Despite the fact that moving this legislation forward has been slow work, advocates are working harder than ever to make sure that voting rights are protected, and in many ways the momentum behind this movement is only building.

This Saturday (August 28th), many people will be marching in Washington, D.C. and other cities across the country to demand action to protect voting rights as part of the March On For Voting Rights. To talk with Edwith and Emily more about this march, the role that young people play in the voting rights movement, and how people can get involved, they’re joined by two expert guests:

Yasmine Guedalia, the March On for Voting Rights National Partnerships Coordinator with the Future Coalition, and Azalea Danes, the Director of Communications for the Future Project.

Generation Progress' website is GenProgress.org and their Twitter handle is @GenProgress. Edwith Theogene's Twitter handle is @WhoIsEdwith and Emily Leach's handle is @emilyfleach. The website for Future Coalition is FutureCoalition.org and their Twitter handle is @FutureCoalition.
