After his harrowing ordeal, Keph awakens on the Amaethyrium.  But his mission has failed.  The Vaer have the hyper-shift-engine blueprints, and may be on the verge of constructing a doomsday weapon.  The fleets of the two opposing factions are about to engage in battle over Aruvis.  Our narrator, as a lowly initiate, is confined to his quarters, feeling like a grounded child.
