    Podcast Summary

    • Struggles in Congress and Political ProfilingCongress struggles to pass spending bills, leading to continuing resolutions. Federal investigators ask banks to search for transactions with political keywords, sparking concerns about profiling.

The Democrat-controlled Senate and Republican-led House continue to struggle with passing spending bills, resulting in the third continuing resolution since last September. The latest bill, which funds certain government agencies through March, now heads to the House for a vote, but tensions remain high between the two parties. Meanwhile, federal investigators are asking banks to search for transactions containing keywords like "MAGA" and "Trump," raising concerns about potential political profiling. Elsewhere, tensions in the Middle East escalated as Pakistan retaliated against Iran for bombing its Balochistan province, resulting in civilian casualties. The region remains on edge as neighboring countries fear the risk of a larger conflict.

    • Uvalde report and border crisis testimonies highlight issues with preparedness and securityThe Uvalde school shooting report and families' testimonies during the border crisis hearing emphasized the importance of adequate training, clear communication, and robust security measures in preventing and responding to critical situations.

The Uvalde, Texas school shooting report revealed several issues, including the school's lack of preparedness and officers' lack of advanced training, the reliance on locked door policies, miscommunication leading to incorrect information given to families, and the first responders' failure to recognize the active shooter situation. The families of victims affected by the Mayorkas border crisis shared heartbreaking stories during a House Republican impeachment hearing, highlighting the apprehension of a murderer who went on to take a life, raising concerns about border security and vetting processes. The report and testimonies underscore the importance of proper training, communication, and security measures in critical situations.

Meanwhile, a grieving mother traveled to confront a drug dealer about her daughter's fatal overdose, only to learn he was not present. Apple, on a different note, is removing a blood oxygen monitoring feature from its popular watch models due to a patent dispute, with the legal process potentially taking over a year. And in personal news, today marks a sad birthday for a mother who lost her 26-year-old daughter to a fentanyl overdose. Despite her wish to be at home grieving, she found herself at the location where she hoped to find answers. EU Privacy Countdown: What the GDPR Regulations Mean For Your Constituents
In May of this year, The European Commission (EC) will issue an expansive set of privacy rules for U.S. companies operating overseas. These rules, otherwise called The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), will require companies across the world to amend their policies and practices to comply with its many regulations. In many ways, the GDPR will become the baseline privacy regime for the Internet. According to PwC, over half of U.S. multinational companies say the GDPR is their top data privacy compliance priority. But many U.S. policymakers view this new regulation as burdensome and costly, while others view it as a positive step towards a global privacy regime for the Internet. How will the GDPR affect the Privacy Shield and other international agreements with our International partners? This briefing focuses on what the GDPR means for U.S. businesses and the worldwide flow of citizens’ information.   When: Friday, March 9th., 2018, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EDT Where: Rayburn House Office Building SPEAKERS – Kelly DeMarchis Bastide, Partner, Venable (Bio) – Melanie Bates, Director of Communications, Future of Privacy Forum, Moderator (Bio) – Aymeric Dupont, Counsellor-Delegation of the European Union to the United States (Bio) – Mike Godwin, Director of Innovation Policy and General Counsel, Distinguished Senior Fellow, R Street Institute (Bio) – Joe Jerome, Policy Counsel, Center for Democracy & Technology (Bio)   Follow: @NetCaucusAC

Digital Transformation on the Route to Net Zero

Digital Transformation on the Route to Net Zero

Companies working in the energy sector are now prosecuting their own self-defined pathways to achieve carbon zero or carbon neutral business profiles. Digital innovations play a key role.

As part of the World Petroleum Congress, September 17-21, 2023 in Calgary, I was on a panel discussion to discuss digital transformation on the route to Net Zero. By now, hopefully, all energy companies will have defined their own pathways to zero carbon (either absolute or net). Our goal on the panel discussion is to peel this problem apart, layer by layer. It’s great that digital innovation is a topic at this event, a once-in-three years affair.

The panel agreed that there is some consensus on the need to address climate change at an industrial level, and that the question is no longer “should we”, but “how should we”.

    The panel discussed the following:

    • The drivers of change that provide the shape and contours of the net zero journey.

    • The various pathways to net zero that could be pursued by the various players in the oil and gas value chain.

    • The digital building blocks that the petroleum industry will leverage to achieve net zero.

The panel hopes to reveal the outlines of how digital enables transparent, auditable and cost-effective carbon emission reduction strategies for petroleum companies.

    This will not be easy.
