    Podcast Summary

    • Enhancing Well-Being with Pleasant Scents, Collaborative Businesses, and Strong RelationshipsPleasant scents from products like Clorox Scentiva improve cleaning routines and boost mood. Collaborative businesses like CVS Health provide quality care and support in various ways. Strong relationships formed through acts of kindness, reciprocity, and gratitude enhance overall well-being.

Clorox Scentiva not only cleans effectively like Clorox but also adds a refreshing scent, making any cleaning routine feel more tropical and invigorating. Meanwhile, successful businesses thrive by working together, as demonstrated by CVS Health's various initiatives to offer quality care and support in multiple ways. In the realm of happiness, research shows that high-quality connections are formed and strengthened through acts of kindness, reciprocity, and gratitude. Sonya Lyubomirsky, a distinguished professor of psychology, has dedicated over 30 years to studying happiness and increasing it through various methods. These findings emphasize the importance of pleasant scents, collaborative businesses, and strong relationships in enhancing our overall well-being.

    • Genetics, life circumstances, and daily behaviors influence happinessGenetics play a role in happiness, but they don't dictate a fixed fate. Life circumstances impact happiness, but their influence is less significant for those who are relatively comfortable. Daily habits and thoughts can enhance or diminish happiness.

Happiness is influenced by a complex interplay of genetics, life circumstances, and daily behaviors. While genetics do play a role in determining happiness levels, they do not dictate a fixed fate. Life circumstances significantly impact happiness, but their influence may be less pronounced for those who are relatively comfortable. The third component is the ability to change our habits and thoughts to enhance or diminish our happiness. The exact percentage of happiness attributable to each factor is difficult to determine, and it's essential to remember that heritability is a population statistic. The importance of genetics in explaining happiness variance becomes more significant when environmental factors are equalized. Ultimately, the extent to which genetics matter depends on the fairness and justice of society. The latest thinking in happiness research suggests that people have a "set point" or baseline level of happiness, but it can be influenced by various factors, including life events and intentional actions.

    • Human beings adapt to positive and negative events, but we adapt more quickly to positive onesThough our happiness level is influenced by genes and environment, we can adapt back to a baseline after experiencing events. We adapt faster to positive events and permanently to negative ones like unemployment or disability. Personality traits like introversion can be overcome through social connections in experimental situations.

While we may have a baseline level of happiness influenced by our genes and environment, human beings are highly adaptable and can return to this baseline after experiencing positive or negative events, a phenomenon known as hedonic adaptation. However, research shows that we adapt more quickly and completely to positive events than negative ones. Our baseline happiness, or "set point," can also change permanently after experiencing certain negative events, such as unemployment or disability. In the context of personality psychology, even if someone is temperamentally introverted, they can still experience the benefits of connection and sociality through experimental situations. This overrides the effects of temperament to some extent. Overall, understanding hedonic adaptation and its implications for our happiness and well-being is a fascinating area of research.

    • Acts of connection increase happinessActing more extroverted temporarily can boost happiness, but it's essential to remain authentic and not force behavior against one's disposition. Happy introverts also exist and their self-acceptance impacts their happiness.

Connection plays a crucial role in happiness. For decades, researchers have found that interventions aimed at increasing happiness often do so by enhancing people's sense of connection or encouraging more social interactions. For instance, writing a gratitude letter or performing acts of kindness can make us feel more connected to others. A study led by the speaker and his former student, Seth Margolis, discovered that people reported increased happiness when they acted more extroverted for a week, regardless of their natural extroversion or introversion levels. However, this boost in happiness was not observed when they acted more introverted, and they also reported feeling less authentic during the extroverted week. These findings suggest that acting against one's disposition, while initially challenging, may lead to greater authenticity and happiness over time. Additionally, extroverts, who are often thought to be more socially energized, can also experience exhaustion from excessive socializing. Furthermore, research indicates that happy introverts exist, and their level of self-acceptance moderates their happiness.

    • Embracing introversion and social connections for happinessIntroverts find happiness through self-acceptance and meaningful social connections, essential for human survival, and simple social interactions can boost mood.

Self-acceptance and social connections are crucial for introverts to be happy. This acceptance means not feeling shame for being introverted and embracing it as part of one's identity. Social connections don't necessarily mean social novelty, but engaging in social interactions can make people happier. Research shows that social connections are essential for human beings as we are social animals, and our survival depends on it. The power of social interactions is amazing, as simple acts like talking to a stranger can make people feel better. Our forthcoming book, "Choose Growth," explores the importance of growth, self-actualization, and deeper connections to our values and authentic selves. Another intriguing area of research is the use of MDMA (3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine), also known as molly or ecstasy, to boost connections and provide insights into what underlies feeling understood and connected. This area of research is called "psychedelic social psychology," and it holds great potential for understanding human relationships and emotions.

    • Understanding Social Connection through MDMAMDMA fosters feelings of closeness and connection, useful in research and applied settings, but potential risks include forming unhealthy connections and unintended negative consequences.

MDMA, also known as Ecstasy or Molly, is a compound that has been shown to foster feelings of closeness, warmth, trust, connection, empathy, and even gratitude and compassion in users. This makes it an intriguing substance to study as a window into understanding the psychological and neurobiological roots of social connection. The acute effects of MDMA can lead to heightened feelings of partner responsiveness, making it useful in research and applied settings, such as couples counseling. However, it's important to be aware of potential risks, such as the possibility of forming unhealthy connections with harmful individuals or becoming overly reliant on the drug to feel close. The pursuit of connection through MDMA, like the pursuit of happiness itself, can also have unintended negative consequences. Despite these considerations, ongoing research in psychedelic science and medicine offers exciting possibilities for using MDMA to improve lives and address the public health concern of loneliness.

    • The constant pursuit of happiness can have unintended negative consequencesFocusing on strategies that promote meaning, purpose, and kindness to others, without fixating on the end goal of happiness, can lead to greater well-being in the long run. Recognize the complexities of human emotions and motivations.

The constant pursuit of happiness can actually backfire and undermine our overall well-being. The term "happiness boomerang effect" refers to this phenomenon, where positive activities or actions taken with the sole intention of increasing happiness can have unintended negative consequences. This can occur when we become overly preoccupied with our own happiness and constantly measure our progress towards it, leading to disappointment and dissatisfaction. Instead, focusing on strategies that promote meaning, purpose, and kindness to others, without fixating on the end goal of happiness, can lead to greater well-being in the long run. Additionally, it's important to recognize that human emotions are complex, and experiences like jealousy or indebtedness can arise even from positive actions. Therefore, it's essential to approach the pursuit of happiness with a nuanced understanding of the complexities of human emotions and motivations.

    • Effective Communication: Listening, Self-Disclosure, and ReciprocityEffective communication involves active listening, self-disclosure, and reciprocity. Listen by asking good questions and showing genuine interest, self-disclose to build trust, and reciprocate to maintain a balanced conversation.

Effective communication, specifically listening, plays a crucial role in building strong relationships and promoting happiness. The principles of active listening, such as asking good questions and showing genuine interest, have been explored in Carl Rogers' work and continue to inspire modern research. However, it's important to note that listening is not the only factor; self-disclosure and reciprocity are also essential. A recent study found that people tend to underestimate the amount of talking they should do in a conversation to be perceived as a good conversation partner. However, too much listening without sharing personal experiences can also be detrimental. The ongoing research in this area will provide valuable insights into the art of listening and its impact on various relationships.

    • Building Meaningful Connections: Synchrony, Positivity Resonance, and ReciprocationTo build high-quality connections, take turns in conversations, ask and answer personal questions, listen actively, express gratitude, and create positive interactions to build trust, synchrony, and positivity resonance.

Building high-quality connections involves symmetric communication and reciprocation. This means taking turns in conversations, asking and answering personal questions, and really listening to each other's responses. Trust is also a crucial component of these connections. Researchers like Jean Dutton, Bob Rosenthal, and Barb Frederiksen have contributed valuable insights into what makes up high-quality connections, including synchrony, positivity resonance, and the importance of feeling understood and valued. Gratitude also plays a role in maintaining and strengthening social relationships. Chemistry, or the feeling of connection between people, can be described as a series of responsive interactions that feel good and positive. When you've experienced chemistry with someone, it may feel like a sense of warmth, liking, and attraction. By understanding these principles and conducting experimental research, we can learn how to create and strengthen meaningful connections.

    • Building Chemistry Through Shared Identity, Goals, and SynchronyChemistry can be built through self-disclosure, asking questions, shared identity, goals, and synchrony. However, perception and reality can differ, and chemistry can be one-sided.

Chemistry, the connection between two people, is not just an innate feeling but can be built through shared identity, goals, and synchrony. Self-disclosure and asking questions can help draw out and build chemistry with others. However, it's important to note that perception and reality can differ, and chemistry can be one-sided. While it's debatable where exactly in the interaction chemistry emerges, it's crucial to observe the interplay of mutual understanding and appreciation between individuals. Ultimately, chemistry is a complex and emergent phenomenon that requires further exploration and understanding.

    • The impact of counting blessings on our perception of fortuneCounting blessings can influence our view of our fortune, but the optimal number is uncertain, and expressing gratitude through writing may bring more happiness

The number of blessings or good things we count in our lives can impact our perception of our overall fortune. According to research, when asked to list a larger number of blessings, individuals may conclude that their lives are less fortunate than they initially thought, or find it to be a burden. The Goldilocks number, as discovered in one study, is eight blessings. However, this finding is not yet confirmed as researchers have been unable to replicate the study. Another study found that writing essays or letters expressing gratitude is more happiness-inducing than simply listing blessings, as it allows for a more meaningful and rich expression of gratitude. Regarding the use of smartphones and social media, research suggests that excessive use, particularly among teen and tween girls, can be linked to lower well-being, depression, and even suicidality. However, the correlations are a subject of debate, with some researchers arguing that they are minimal.

    • Impact of Social Media on Girls' Well-being: A Mixed PictureReducing social media use can have positive effects, but not all apps have the same impact. Some apps, like gaming, camera, and Snapchat, are positively associated with happiness, while others, like Tinder, Twitter, Safari, Mail, Facebook, Blackboard, and WeChat, have negative associations. Instagram and TikTok have minimal impact on happiness.

There is ongoing debate about the impact of smartphone and social media use on well-being, particularly for girls and young girls. While some studies suggest a negative association, others are not conclusive. An experiment conducted by Lisa found that reducing social media use led to some positive effects, but the effects were not significant for all apps. Interestingly, certain apps like gaming apps, camera apps, and Snapchat were positively associated with happiness, while apps like Tinder, Twitter, Safari, Mail, Facebook, Blackboard, and WeChat had negative associations. However, the correlation between Instagram and happiness was basically zero, as was the correlation with TikTok. Overall, more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between technology use and well-being.

    • Acts of kindness linked to healthier immune profilePerforming acts of kindness can decrease inflammation and potentially prevent health issues

Acts of kindness not only make us feel good emotionally but also have a positive impact on our physical health. A study conducted by Sonya Lyubomirsky and her team found that people who performed acts of kindness for others showed a decrease in pro-inflammatory gene expression over a period of four weeks, indicating a healthier immune profile. This is an exciting discovery as inflammation is linked to various health issues, and the researchers believe that kindness might even help prevent viruses or illnesses. It's important to note that this is just an indication, and further research is needed to confirm the health benefits of kindness. Nonetheless, it's a reminder that kindness matters, especially in today's divisive environment. Connecting with others and doing good for them not only brings happiness but might also contribute to better health.

1673 To Have and To Hold

1673 To Have and To Hold

The lifetime commitment to have and to hold from this day forward is a vow of unending love. However, how much of this vow stays true when life isn't always what's expected?

It's easy to get wrapped up in what the world says is right. Can you even remember the vows in your wedding?

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT

Some people write theirs, others use a more traditional approach.

Yesterday, I was quickly reminded of that pure bliss while sitting in the DMV of all places. Time to get a driver's permit for our youngest and an intermediate license for our next to youngest.

The sweet couple had "young love" written all over their faces. The groom said with a great big grin, "Today, you get to change your name officially."

The bride so giddy couldn't help but lean in for a kiss as she tucked away the paperwork showing their marriage.

The whole time together, their focus was on each other. Much was going on around them, but they did not get distracted. Their eyes and conversation were held close to each others' hearts.

In those minutes of watching "young love" blossom before me, I was quickly reminded how fragile our relationships are.

At one minute we are consumed with all of our love. But the next, can lead us down the path of distraction or disappointment.

Most of which is the difference of being wrapped up in the world or wrapped up in each other.

If you want your marriage to sizzle for years, you have to wrap yourself up in each other!

The K.I.S.S. ~ Wrap yourself in each other!

Your eyes can't wonder side to side and be distracted by what the world is offering. When you're together, you need to be together consumed by the love for your spouse.

Yet we get super busy, and even in the privacy of our homes, we take our spouse for granted. We assume he/she will be around always.

However, if we do not wrap ourselves up in each other, it makes it easier to grow apart as the years pass.

So how can you wrap yourself in each other?

    1. Keep your love focused. Don't get distracted by the noise of the world.
    2. Keep your love fresh. Make time for "just the two of us"
    3. Keep your love young. Always learn something new about your spouse at least weekly.

To have and to hold from this day forward is a beautiful commitment. And that beautiful commitment requires you to take A.I.M.

CHALLENGE: How can you wrap yourself in your spouse?

    2941 More of We

    2941 More of We

Life can get in the way of loving those closest to us, especially our spouses. So instead of hiding in our busyness and floundering more in someone else's highlight reel, make a commitment to more of we.

How much time do you spend with your spouse?

Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. https://createyournow.mn.co

And would you say that you spend less time together now than when you got married?

Most of us have to really stop and think when we see our sweethearts. And as for the time, what time is it again?

The number one relationship, if you're married, is your spouse.

But very quickly, we find other ways to occupy our time, distract our attention, and lead us down a rabbit hole in our own homes.

It just does not seem fair to anyone!

Yet you live it every day. You get up and do YOUR thing and forget that there's someONE in your life. You take care of the children, because you have to. But the rest is left to fend for themselves.

How can any marriage be awesome if that's a typical every day?

What if you would make time for each other?

What if there was more of we?

The K.I.S.S. ~ More of WE!

My goal here is to get you thinking about how you spend TIME with your spouse.

Are you showing up with your best self, or is your spouse getting the leftovers?

"Leftovers are great for food, not so much for love!" ~ Kristianne Wargo

You get out what you put into your marriage. So why not show up with enthusiasm? Why not give more when you don't receive? Why not have compassion during challenges in life? Why not be together more than you are apart?

It's hard to build a strong foundation in marriage if you're not together. Logistics do matter.

I want to encourage you to analyze your time with your spouse.

    1. How much time do you spend together in bed?
    2. How much time do you spend as a couple awake and interacting?
    3. How much time do you spend talking about life, not just kids and career?

Then from there, you'll be able to see what is happening regarding time.

    Is time on your side?

Assuming that you fall into "most of us," then you can make some tweaks to how you hang out together. The way you spend your time together matters!

QUESTION: What can you do differently to add time to love?

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"

1910 How Do You Balance Life's Demands?

1910 How Do You Balance Life's Demands?

Life can give you lemons; busyness, stress, and exhaustion. Out of control seems like the new normal. How do you balance life's demands when you can't escape your living room?

Maybe you've been running laps around the coffee table and knocked a few things over. Maybe you've decided that less is more.

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACThttp://bit.ly/WomenofIMPACT

But only if you could get less hanging out and more peace in the house.

Children of all ages can stir up so much energy. Yet the challenge is having this energy in one place ALWAYS! At least before, you could change the environment.

Now, you are stuck. Not because you want to be, but because you have to be.

Finding a balance in your own life is one thing. But creating it with the family is another.

So you gotta put first things first.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Put first things first!

Yes, the kiddos matter. But if you don't keep your head on, a lot more can go wrong.

So take a deep breath. Put first things first!

    1. Create an escape moment. This is a way to give yourself space for personal accountability. Run in such a way that you might win. (1 Corinthians 9:24) You may not be able to leave the area, but you can find a moment where you can gain a sense of peace.
    2. Energize with hope. Do something that switches the focus on the positive, not the negative. Dance. Laugh.
    3. Play Hide 'n Seek. You make the rules. Even the little ones can play. You can even play with doubles. Choose a base and you've got this. Just beware! The cat might give you away.

How you feel will be multiplied by the children. They can sense when you are feeling stressed, relaxed, or even nervous. Do your best to project what you want them to feed off of.

"Train for life. Love your journey!!!"

    2950 Spin It Your Way!

    2950 Spin It Your Way!

Do failures and successes really define you as a person? Or is it the act of how you overcome? Don't let the cards you are dealt determine your direction. Spin it your way!

So how are you today? Are you in recovery mode from your Super Bowl party?

Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. https://createyournow.mn.co

Oh, and did your team win?

Today, we will take a play out of the playbook and do a little Monday quarterbacking.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Spin it your way!

Now, you have many choices, rather you win or lose, fail or succeed.

But how you continue to move forward sets the tone for your journey!

You can choose to get stuck in your own patterns and habits, and make excuses for why you fell short and didn't make it to the finish line.

Or you can choose to do it differently without excuses, no matter the result.

    1. Play through the highs and lows. And in this, you are giving your best! You have to stay focused. You can't give up regardless of where you land. "When you take action, you make traction. Take A.I.M.!" ~ Kristianne Wargo
    2. Keep it fresh and be creative. You can play in the game of life however you want. You get to come up with innovative ideas. You get to play to your strengths, so you can tighten your weaknesses. Think outside the box. "Patterns only keep you anchored to what worked in the moment. A new moment requires new actions to anchor." ~ Kristianne Wargo
    3. Be teachable throughout life. You can't do what God designed you to do if you aren't willing to become who He created you to be. You have got to be teachable. You must be willing to learn more even when you're at your best.

Life isn't about proving who you are. What matters is whose you are. When you consider how to overcome your circumstances or challenges, you are leading your life well.

PRAYER: May your journey continue to be steps of greatness that lead you closer to God and what He has designed for your life.

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"
