A research outpost on a planet harboring a pre-industrial civilization of Vulcan like beings known as the Mintakans is under threat by a malfunction which renders their "Duck Blind" inoperable and exposes the inhabitants of a small village to other beings prematurely. Several of the Mintakans experience an existential crisis and now Picard and the crew must race to find a way to minimize the damage done to their natural course by this exposure.
