On Episode 146 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast, hosts Pavan and Ganesh sit down to discuss the brewing, preparation and consumption of alcoholic beverages, an activity that has been a part of human society for at least 10,000 years.

Pavan shares how various beverages are created using techniques of fermentation and distillation. He also discusses how India, especially Independent Indian governments have viewed alcohol as something to either be banned, or taxed heavily and controlled in every aspect. He discusses the creation of IMFLs or “Indian Made Foreign Liquors” and how it is only over the last 10-15 years that Indian companies are moving beyond this to make high quality alcoholic beverages and liquors for both Indians and the world. He also shares how his drink of choice is a Gin and Tonic, a mixed drink that developed because of the colonisation of India by the British.

Most of us have grown up hearing the croaking of frogs every monsoon, and may have even had the ‘scare’ of a frog jumping into our houses at one point or another. While reptiles, birds and big mammals often capture our imagination – we often end up ignoring the simple frogs and toads that form a key part of the habitats around us.

Dr Gururaja KV is a ‘batrachologist’, one who studies amphibians, and is currently a faculty member at the Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology, as well as an Adjunct Fellow at Gubbi Labs. With his PhD from Kuvempu University and subsequent research at the Indian Institute of Science, Gururaja has been studying frogs and toads for over 20 years.

He has helped discover, identify and describe over 20 new frog species in India, working extensively in the Western Ghats and beyond. On Episode 145 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast, Dr Gururaja shares his joy and his love for frogs, what drew him to study these fascinating creatures, and helps us learn more about frogs, as well as more about the process of discovering new species and understanding their behaviour.

A Metropolis like Bengaluru has numerous government-related agencies that deliver essential services or governance that matters to the everyday lives of residents. In Bengaluru, BWSSB manages piped water supply and sewerage, BESCOM distributes electricity, BMTC runs public buses, BMRCL runs the city metro rail, just to name a few. Similarly, there are many agencies that execute infrastructure projects across the state. Almost all of them are divorced from locally elected governments, and often fail to deliver well on public objectives.

Gubbi Labs conducts research, workshops and consulting on a host of issues ranging from mapping, urban planning, environmental conservation and more. Sudhira has a PhD from the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, and works on geospatial analysis, urban growth and governance, as well as science communication and public education.

'ನಾಗರಿಕ' ಎಂಬ ಪದವು 'ನಗರ'ಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಭಂದ ಪಟ್ಟದ್ದು, ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ನಲ್ಲೂ ಮತ್ತು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲೂ. ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕರು ರಾಜ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಚುನಾವಣೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮತದಾನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವೇ ಕೆಲವು ಜನರು ಮಾತ್ರ ನಗರ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಚುನಾವಣೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಗಮನಹರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಂತಹ ಮಹಾನಗರಗಳಲ್ಲಿ, ನಗರ ಚುನಾವಣೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತದಾರರ ಜಾಗೃತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇದರಿಂದಾಗಿ ಮತದಾನ ಮಾಡುವವರ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಎರಡೂ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಇರುತ್ತೆ. ರಾಜ್ಯ ಸರ್ಕಾರಗಳು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಅತಿಯಾದ ನಿಯಂತ್ರಣವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು ಇದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಬಿಬಿಎಂಪಿ ಚುನಾವಣೆ 2 ವರ್ಷದಿಂದ ನಡೆದಿಲ್ಲ. ಈವಾಗ ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ಜುಲೈ 2022 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಚುನಾವಣಾ ದಿನಾಂಕವನ್ನ ನಾವು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನಿ ಚಾಮರಾಜ್ ಅವರು ಸುಮಾರು 35 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿ ಮತ್ತು ನಗರ ಆಡಳಿತದ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರ ಕುರಿತು ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 2005 ರಿಂದ CIVIC ನ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಾಹಕ ಟ್ರಸ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. 'ನಾಗರಿಕ ಸಮಾಜ ವೇದಿಕೆ'ಯ ನೇತ್ರತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಸಂಗಡಿಗರು ಸೇರಿ 'BBMP ಚುನಾವಣೆ 2022 ರ ಪ್ರಣಾಳಿಕೆ'ಯನ್ನು ತಯಾರಿಸಿದ್ದು, ಇದನ್ನು ಜೂನ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ನಗರ ಮತ್ತು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ನಾಯಕರನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡಲಾಯಿತು.

ತಲೆ ಹರಟೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪಾಡ್ಕಾಸ್ಟ್ ನ 143 ನೇ ಸಂಚಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾತ್ಯಾಯಿನಿಯವರು ಹೇಗೆ ಪ್ರಜಾಪ್ರಭುತ್ವವು ಚುನಾವಣೆಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕೊನೆಗೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು, ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಗಳು, ಹೊಣೆಗಾರಿಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾರದರ್ಶಕತೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಡೆಯಬೇಕಾದ ಸಕ್ರಿಯ ವಾರ್ಡ್ ಸಮಿತಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರದೇಶ ಸಭೆಗಳ ಅಗತ್ಯತೆಗಳ ಕುರಿತೂ ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಆಡಳಿತ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಊರಿನ ತಳಮಟ್ಟದ ನಾಗರಿಕರಿಗೂ ಕೂಡ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಹವಾದ ಸವಲತ್ತುಗಳು ಸಿಗುವಂತಾಗಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುವುದರ ಕುರಿತೂ ವಿಸ್ತ್ರತವಾಗಿ ಚರ್ಚಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಬನ್ನಿ ಕೇಳಿ!

The word ‘citizen’ has always been connected to a ‘city’, in English and in Kannada. While many of us may actively vote and participate in state and national elections and politics, far fewer people stay connected in city and local politics. In a metropolis like Bengaluru, voter turnouts and voter awareness remains low during city elections. State governments also have excessive control over most local decisions, and as a result Bengaluru’s BBMP elections are overdue for 2 years now, and we can finally expect to learn the election dates in July 2022.

Kathyayini Chamaraj has been writing and working on Bengaluru’s development and urban governance issues for close to 35 years, and has been the Executive Trustee of CIVIC since 2005. As a part of a larger ‘Civil Society Forum’, Kathyayini and her collaborators have put together a ‘Manifesto for BBMP Elections 2022’, which was released in June in an event featuring top political leaders in the city and the state of Karnataka.

On Episode 143 of the Thale-Harate Kannada Podcast, Kathyayini explains how democracy doesn’t end with the elections, but needs active Ward Committees and Area Sabhas, with well-defined roles, responsibilities, accountability and transparency. She further details how Bengaluru needs to be governed such that its least fortunate citizens receive the focus and attention they deserve. Tune in!

Travel and tourism are often thought of as group activities to do with friends, families or loved ones. This is ingrained in us as we often start traveling with our parents while still young. However, solo traveling has its own joys, attractions and offers a completely different experience even if you are visiting the same places.

Ganesh joins Pavan from Thane, where he is currently on the last leg of his travels across Pune, Mumbai and elsewhere. Ganesh has been biking for about 13 years now, and has been going on solo bike trips across the length and breadth of South India from within months of getting his first bike.

In the first half of the episode, Ganesh shares his personal experience of bike journeys, what he has enjoyed about them, and what aspiring bikers and travelers can both expect and need to prepare themselves for while traveling. In the second half, both Ganesh and Pavan share some insights from their experiences visiting new cities on their own. Tune in!
