The 6 Phases of CHANGE Vital Lockdown & Covid Concepts [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors]

    en-GBNovember 20, 2020
What are the six phases of change according to Rob Moore?
How can understanding change phases help businesses?
Why is disruption often viewed negatively?
What example illustrates the positive impact of disruption?
How does the speaker's experience reflect disruption's opportunities?

    Podcast Summary

    • The Cycle of Chaos and Order in DisruptionUnderstand the six phases of change in disruption - chaos stage(disruption, denial, resistance) and ordering stage(acceptance, evaluation, implementation) - to adapt effectively and embrace growth through the cycle of chaos and order.

Being a disruptive entrepreneur means embracing change and going beyond the ordinary. According to Rob Moore, there are six phases of change: disruption, denial, resistance, acceptance, evaluation, and implementation. The first three phases, disruption, denial, and resistance, are the chaos stage, while the last three phases, acceptance, evaluation, and implementation, are the ordering stage. Understanding these phases can help you adapt to disruptions in business and life more effectively. Evolution is a cycle of chaos and order, and successful enterprises go through this cycle. The more you can accept and adapt to change, the quicker you can start and scale your business. So, embrace disruption and be open to the cycle of chaos and order for growth and success.

    • Disruption: A Catalyst for Growth and InnovationDisruption can lead to growth, innovation, and new opportunities, as seen in Henry Ford's creation of the Model T Ford and the speaker's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Being proactive in creating disruption is empowering.

Disruption, while often seen as negative, can actually be a good thing. Disruptors challenge the status quo and force change, which can lead to innovation and growth. Henry Ford's creation of the Model T Ford is a prime example of disruption, as it revolutionized the way people traveled. Disruptions can happen to businesses or be self-initiated, and being proactive in creating disruption is more empowering than being reactive to it. The speaker, who was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, shares how it forced him to create online courses and expand his business globally. Disruption can also lead to new opportunities, such as the speaker's partnership with his watch dealer, Broadwalk. Overall, embracing disruption can lead to growth, innovation, and new opportunities.

    • Embrace Change or Get Left BehindBe open to change and continuously evolve for personal and business growth. Denial is a natural response, but it's essential to overcome it for long-term success.

Change is inevitable, and it's essential to embrace it or risk being left behind. Rob, a disruptive entrepreneur, encourages this mindset by offering a premium supporter program with exclusive content and community benefits. Denial, or fear of change, is a natural response, even for those who are usually open to it. Rob shared his experience of denial during the initial COVID-19 lockdown. Despite being an advocate for change, he still had a period of resistance. This denial phase is common, especially when current methods are working or when one is unsure of alternative approaches. Overall, being open to change and continuously evolving is crucial for personal and business growth.

    • The Six Stages of ChangeDenial and resistance are common reactions to change, but acceptance is the turning point for embracing it and moving forward

Change, whether personal or societal, follows a predictable pattern. This pattern, known as the six stages of change, includes disruption, denial, resistance, acceptance, exploration, and integration. During the denial stage, one may refuse to acknowledge the change, while in resistance, one may resist or fight against it. However, acceptance marks the turning point where one surrenders to the change and embraces it. It's important to recognize that these stages are not necessarily linear or time-bound, and one may experience various emotions during the process. Acceptance is the key to moving forward and making the most of the change.

    • Understanding the Emotional Response to ChangeRob Moore's 6-phase change model helps individuals and businesses navigate the emotional response to change by acknowledging denial, resistance, and disruption, followed by productive assessment, decisive action, and embracing the new order.

The process of managing change involves navigating through various emotions and stages. Rob Moore's 6 phases of change model includes denial, resistance, disruption, evaluation, implementation, and evolution. The first three stages represent the emotional response to change, while the last three stages focus on productive assessment, decisive action, and embracing the new order. By understanding and managing these emotions, individuals and businesses can respond proactively to change instead of reactively. Moore's model is designed to help evolve and grow more quickly, with a focus on entrepreneurship and business. His recent books, "Reinvent Yourself" and "Opportunity," both include a chapter on this 6-phase model.

    • Navigating the Stages of ChangeUnderstanding and embracing the stages of change - disruption, denial, resistance, acceptance, evaluation, and implementation - can help individuals and organizations thrive during disruptive times.

The process of embracing change involves several distinct phases. These phases include disruption, denial, resistance, acceptance, evaluation, and implementation. During the disruption phase, the status quo is challenged and the old way of doing things is broken up. In the denial phase, there is fear and resistance to change, and people hold on tightly to the old ways. In the resistance phase, people justify and defend the old ways, despite the evidence of change. Acceptance is the realization that change is inevitable and undeniable. In the evaluation phase, negative emotions are turned into positive, and solutions are proactively sought out. Finally, in the implementation phase, decisions are made, actions are taken, and progress is made towards a new way of doing things. Change is a messy and challenging process, but it also presents great opportunities. By understanding and navigating these phases, individuals and organizations can not only survive disruptive times but thrive in them. So, if you're facing change, remember that it's a natural process with distinct stages, and with the right mindset and approach, you can make the most of it.

This episode is a must-listen for aspiring entrepreneurs, offering a rare glimpse into the mind of a retail disruptor who transformed the UK discount sector.

    Simon Arora REVEALS:

    • Why productivity and efficiency were key to B&M’s shopping success
    • The importance of maintaining a "paranoid" mindset in business
    • The key to work-life balance
    • Why cash is king
    • Why CEOs have to trust employees more
    • The challenges of international expansion
    • What he learnt from his failures
    • The role of luck in anyone’s success

    BEST MOMENTS

"Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity. Cash is reality."

"My character flaw is that every transaction or opportunity didn't go right... is seared in the mind 10 times more vividly than the successes."

"I like to think that I respected my colleagues' work-life balance. I was never a believer in people having to work long hours... I'd rather you just get the work done in the 40-hour week, but just be really productive."

"The higher the monkey climbs a tree, the more you see of its backside."

"We did a series of transactions in the three, four years after 2008, the each time step changed the size of our business. And we double down in that period of good fortune where all these opportunities were coming at us rather than taking our foot off the gas."

"As we grew B&M, we decided that we were going to spend none of our turnover on advertising. We built a business from 20 shops to five billion of revenue with no advertising budget."

"I personally negotiated something like 17 million square feet of UK retail selling space. 750 large stores at the risk of sounding immodest. No individuals ever done that in UK retail."

"The entrepreneurs that really make a difference and create great organszations are the ones that optimise their success. That periods of good look, they double down, they take full advantage of it rather than thinking, well, this is fine."

Inside the Mind of an FBI Negotiator: Chris Voss Reveals All

Inside the Mind of an FBI Negotiator: Chris Voss Reveals All

Rob is joined by Chris Voss, a former FBI hostage negotiator. Rob uncovers Voss's secrets to reading people, predicting behaviour, and navigating dangerous situations. From hostage crises to boardroom battles, Voss reveals how his techniques can revolutionise your business and personal relationships.

    Chris Voss REVEALS:

    • Fear of loss is the biggest driver of decision-making, with about 70% accuracy in predicting behaviour changes.
    • Empathy is the most effective and lasting way to influence someone, with tactical empathy being a key tool in negotiations.
    • There are three types of negotiators globally: assertors, analysts, and accommodators, they are evenly split regardless of demographics.
    • Voss advocates for using "no-oriented" questions instead of seeking "yes" answers to achieve more durable responses in negotiations.
    • Labels (e.g., "It seems like...") and mirrors (repeating the last 1-3 words) are powerful tools for guiding conversations and gathering information.
    • Most lying is defensive and about self-protection, with different types of negotiators having varying views on what constitutes a lie.
    • To negotiate a pay raise, consistently demonstrate value beyond your cost to the employer and focus on future contributions.

    BEST MOMENTS

"Empathy is really about understanding the other person's patterns first, which means just because you don't, wouldn't do it, doesn't mean you can't understand it."

"You never give up and you can always get smarter. I'm willing to be smarter today than I was yesterday."

"The power of respect for your adversary is kind of an irresistible power. And the other side violates it when you demonstrate respect first."

"People react the same under all circumstances. They're driven by the same thing."

"Behaviour prediction is easy. Like everybody, everybody's driven, driven by patterns." - Chris Voss

"Human beings don't resent bad news. They resent getting caught off guard by bad."

"Understand what it looks like to your employer. You want a raise, you got to be consistently more viable than what they're paying you."

John Chambers - Pattern Matching, Playbooks, and Winning Product Categories - [Founder’s Field Guide, EP.6]
My guest this week is John Chambers. John was the CEO of Cisco from 1995 to 2015 where he helped grow Cisco from $70 million to $40 billion in annual revenue. In this conversation we discuss the best business lesson he learned from long time GE CEO Jack Welch, his key lessons from acquiring over 180 companies with Cisco, pattern recognition and playbooks, capitalizing on market transitions enabled by new technologies, the value of team offsites, and a lot more. I was immediately drawn into John's magnetic personality and it's easy to see how he was so adept at running a 40,000 person company for 2 decades.
