    About this Episode

Fear Level: Spoopy (not scary) w/mild hatred of who you used to be
Trigger Warnings: Snakes, bugs, rats, suicide, suicidal ideation, abuse, sexual assault, mind control

    • Directors: Andrew Fleming
    • Writers: Peter Filardi, Andrew Fleming
    • Stars: Rachel True, Robin Tunney, Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Breckin Meyer, Christine Taylor

If you grew up in the nineties, at any point had an all black wardrobe, and ever had a friend who warned you about particular herbs because they could be used to put a love spell on you (hi Jennifer) then the odds are pretty good at some point you were very well acquainted with the 1996 film "The Craft".
It's about four high school girls who are very into magic, very bad at wearing their catholic school uniforms to regulation, and each have one very specific life problem that they decide to change with the practical application of magic. Of course, in any nineties movie, girls strive to get some kind of power and control in their lives and when they get it they go immediately insane and begin killing people and turning on each other (sigh). We all remember this movie (except Ben, who is a literal infant) but just how well do we remember it? Is it the "Whedonesque" girl power phenomenon that some people remember or is it "Whedonesque" in all the wrong ways? Jump in and let's find out!

    Points of Interest:
    Which element are you?
What's your favorite 90's fashion accessory?

    Unrealistically barren magic shops
    Don't steal from local witches
We find out a lot about each other (everybody was a witch, except Jeremy who was a football player. TWIST!)
WHY IS EVERYBODY IN LOVE WITH CHRIS HOOKER?! HE'S THE WORST!
Large chunks of this plot don't make sense.
    So many snakes
Did The Craft change the ecosystem of Los Angeles?
This movie hates people experiencing homelessness and victims of abuse.

Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (AKA Double Bag Your Hands) w/ Aaron Amos and Emmanuel Lipscomb

Happy Black History Month! And, as such, Happy Black Director's Month here on Progressively Horrified.

We're starting off hot with a new take on the Frankenstein story, "An Angry Black Girl and her Monster". In a way, it's a little bit of a "what if Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur was a horror story?" but it's also got a little bit of "The Wire" flavor to it. It's clearly made with not a lot of money, but some excellent casting choices. Some of the direction late in this one is a little puzzling, but we think it's still very much worth a watch!

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust w/ Amanda

The episode you’re about to listen to is about Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) and some relevant trigger warnings for this discussion include allusion to drug overdose and animal death, and our hosts ranked this movie as spoopy, and totally metal. Also, big thanks to special guest Amanda Albrecht (@Robofeather) - who is totally metal as well.

Soft and Quiet (aka Nazi Pie) with Greg Silber and Joe Corallo

Soft and Quiet (aka Nazi Pie) with Greg Silber and Joe Corallo

It's our first movie of the new year and we are starting out UPSETTING!
"Soft and Quiet" is a movie that sneaks up on you and ruins your day. It is absolutely and completely without chill of any kind. It's about a group of white women who start out by attending a regular old Nazi bookclub and by the end of the night will have committed multiple felonies/hate crimes.
It's a tight film. It's short. It's filmed in "one take" and follows these white women as things get wildly out of control. You're along for the whole ride AND WE DID NOT WANT TO BE... but... this movie does a few things really well. It's incredibly made, incredibly acted, brilliantly scripted. If it wasn't one of the single most traumatic watches we've had on this show, I'd say everybody should watch it. It is, however, incredibly traumatic and we are still talking about who we think the audience is for this and who should see it.

Ranking the Movies of 2023 Part 1 (aka 4 Movies to Hate Anybody)

Ranking the Movies of 2023 Part 1 (aka 4 Movies to Hate Anybody)

2023: that was a fucking yeah, huh?

We discovered that watching their movies back to back four weeks in a row was enough to make us hate any director. My eye has only recently stopped twitching when people say the name Cronenberg. Would you believe I even got tired to Guillermo Del Toro? Whodathunk?
We caught up with Scream just in time for it to implode very publicly. We fell in love with a goofy black lesbian and her softspoken brother as they fought a sky manta ray. We learned how to murder someone with a Menu, we learned that babies are made when a woman grows an external rage womb, and we learned perhaps the least effective way to stop an apocalypse by showing up at a gay couple's cabin. But perhaps most importantly, Hellbender taught us that the real magical powers were the friends we ate along the way
