The Future of Work Part 3: Greatness Is in the Agency of Others

    enMarch 08, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • The Role of Technology in Transforming RecruitingTechnology is democratizing recruiting by reducing reliance on nepotism and personal connections, making it more accessible and merit-based. Platforms and tools like Atlassian help teams collaborate and be productive, while future advancements will continue to transform the hiring landscape.

Technology is playing an increasingly important role in recruiting and building teams, helping to level the playing field and reduce the reliance on nepotism and personal connections. Atlassian software, for instance, assists teams in collaboration and productivity, enabling individuals to work together effectively, regardless of size or location. In the future, platforms and technologies are expected to continue to transform the recruiting landscape, making it more accessible and merit-based. Fergus, a listener from London, asked about the future of recruiting and the role of tech in this space. While nepotism may still exist in some industries, the majority of roles offer opportunities for motivated individuals with strong skills and EQ. With a historically strong labor market, platforms and technologies are making it easier for people to find and connect with potential employers.

    • Standing out in a competitive job marketCertifications can help job seekers differentiate themselves in a strong but competitive labor market, while being prepared for interviews and staying informed about industry trends are essential fundamentals.

The job market currently favors job seekers with 1.9 open positions for every one person pursuing employment. However, standing out in this market requires effort and differentiation. Certifications, whether academic or vocational, can help job seekers distinguish themselves. In the future, proactive recruiting methods may become more common, with organizations identifying and reaching out to potential candidates based on their success and qualifications in a particular industry or firm. Despite these changes, the importance of being prepared for job interviews with a clear understanding of one's unique qualifications and background remains crucial. The labor market is historically strong, but competition remains high, and persistence is key. The job search process may continue to evolve, but the fundamentals of standing out and being prepared will remain essential.

    • Flattening team structures and effective managementManagers must be experts, demonstrate empathy, show appreciation, and ensure accountability to build strong, effective teams in a flattened organizational structure.

The future of team organization lies in flattening structures, but effective management is crucial. As the workforce evolves, managers must become experts in their fields, demonstrate empathy and understanding for individual team members' priorities, and show appreciation through both economic and non-economic means. Accountability is also essential, with clear job descriptions, open dialogue, and constructive feedback. Overall, the key to success in this changing business landscape is adaptability and a focus on building strong, effective teams.

    • Different forms of effective leadershipInspirational leaders inspire and excite, player-coaches teach and manage, and managers create structure and provide feedback.

Effective leadership comes in different forms, and both inspirational and player-coach styles have their merits. While inspirational leaders can inspire and excite employees with a clear vision, player-coach leaders focus on teaching, coaching, and managing individuals to help them grow and succeed. Managers are essential for creating structure, setting goals, and providing feedback, especially for young employees who are hungry for development opportunities. Despite the trend towards flatter organizations, having a clear management structure is crucial for ensuring a team's collective success. The best leaders understand this and adapt their leadership style to meet the unique needs of their team members.

    • Hiring the Right Team is Crucial for Optimal PerformanceTake time to carefully consider each candidate's background and compatibility with the team and organization during the hiring process to build a strong and effective team. Building a strong culture, especially in a remote work environment, is essential for long-term success.

Having the right team is crucial for optimal performance, whether in sports or business. However, hiring wisely is not always an easy task, especially when a company has excess capital and feels the pressure to grow quickly. This can lead to ignoring red flags and hiring individuals who may not be the best fit for the team or the company culture. The hiring process should not be rushed, and it's essential to carefully consider each candidate's background and compatibility with the team and the organization. Additionally, building a strong culture, especially in a remote work environment, can be challenging but is essential for long-term success. Betterment, an automated investing and savings app, can help investors make their money work hard for them, while they focus on growing their business and hiring the right team.

    • Effective hiring in SMEs relies on references and trusting current employeesPrioritize hiring individuals with exceptional skills and potential, trust recommendations, let go of underperformers promptly, and regularly ask network for referrals.

Effective hiring in small and medium-sized companies relies heavily on reference hires and trusting the recommendations of current employees. The speaker emphasizes that the hiring process can be challenging and unpredictable, and it's essential to be willing to let go of underperforming employees promptly. The speaker also advocates for a proactive approach to recruiting, encouraging business owners to regularly ask their network for referrals, even if those individuals aren't actively seeking new opportunities. The speaker's approach to hiring is akin to recruiting athletes, meaning they prioritize hiring individuals with exceptional skills and potential, even if it means creating a new role for them. The importance of references and trust cannot be overstated, as the speaker shares a personal experience of hiring someone based on a great interview but ultimately discovering they were unsuitable for the role.

    • Confidence in Young People's Problem-Solving SkillsThe speaker trusts young people's adaptability and solution-finding abilities, encouraging listeners to send questions to office hours.

Young people possess remarkable agility and problem-solving skills. The speaker expresses confidence in their ability to adapt and find solutions. Building Successful UX Teams

    Building Successful UX Teams

In this episode, Chris & Mustafa sit down to discuss topics around UX teams. They begin the conversation by revising a question from the last show: what is UX? Chris thinks the significant differences between UX and Product are empiricism and big-picture thinking. Mustafa thinks Uxers differ from business folks because they are trained and experienced at empathizing. The conversation then jumps to a quick debate about the end of design: simplicity or functionality. After those brief tangents, Chris & Mustafa spend the rest of the show discussing topics about teams including structure and flexibility, agency vs. embedded models, the differences between research and design on teams, what ideal teams look like, norms and standards, and end by asking if a universal framework can be achieved. Sit back and enjoy this episode of YouX!

The CERTIFIED Experience with Tommy Demos and Eric Cornish

After two (very) long years of hiatus, we’re so happy that CERTIFIED 2022 will be back as an in-person event! For many of us, it’s been a while since we’ve been able to attend an in-person conference. We wanted to give everyone a refresher on what you can expect at our annual CERTIFIED Educator Conference.

For this episode, we sat down with Tommy Demos and Eric Cornish, two of our esteemed CERTIFIED alumni. Eric Cornish is a full-time design Professor based in Miami, Florida. Professor Cornish is an active design professional and educator for nearly 20 years. He is also an Adobe Education Leader (AEL) and Adobe Digital Design Specialist. He truly believes that “Creativity is not exclusive; it is a fundamental human activity.”

Professor Tommy Demos is a full-time, tenured Professor of Film, Television & Digital Production in the School of Entertainment & Design Technology at Miami Dade College (MDC) in Miami, FL. Since 2011, he has taught over 130 sections of college-level courses in video editing, motion graphics, and animation and is currently pursuing a PhD in Leadership Studies with a concentration in Information Systems.

We discussed their memories from our last CERTIFIED Conference in 2019, how CERTIFIED impacted them and their students, and how educators can find funding to attend this, and any other, professional development conference. If you’re on the fence about attending CERTIFIED, then this episode is for you.

Beyond bias: Bringing behavioral science to hiring decisions

One bread-and-butter HR function—Talent Acquisition—has seen an explosion in tech tools designed to help source, recruit, and hire the right people faster. But too often, either the human factor gets in the way of sound decision-making or the technology itself lets biases creep in. Join us as our guest, Kate Glazebook, CEO and Co-Founder at Applied, discusses the many, often surprising, ways bias keeps organizations from making the best hiring decisions and how behavioral science is helping them battle back.
