The Man Who Predicts How Long You Have Left To Live (To The Nearest Month): Gary Brecka

    enFebruary 27, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Unveiling the Shocking Truth: How Mortality Science Saved the Insurance Industry!Mortality science is crucial in the insurance industry as it accurately predicts life expectancy and prevents financial failure. However, it lacks patient and physician contact, hindering timely interventions. Oxygen deficiency plays a significant role in diseases and dysfunctions, emphasizing the need for further research to revolutionize medicine.

Mortality science and the accuracy of mortality prediction play a significant role in the insurance industry. Despite facing criticism, mortality science provides valuable insights into life expectancy and allows insurance companies to make informed financial decisions. This accuracy is demonstrated by the fact that no life insurance company failed during the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, while numerous other financial institutions did. However, the downside revealed by the conversation is the lack of contact with patients and treating physicians, preventing the intervention in life-threatening situations. Furthermore, the discussion emphasizes the importance of oxygen in the human body and highlights that a lack of oxygen is often the root cause or aggravating factor for various diseases and dysfunctions. Ultimately, understanding mortality and the impact of oxygen deficiency can revolutionize modern medicine and potentially improve human health.

    • Are genetically inherited diseases really a result of genetic factors?By challenging the belief that diseases are solely caused by genes and instead focusing on addressing nutrient deficiencies, individuals can improve their health and well-being.

Individuals should question the notion of genetically inherited diseases. While it is commonly believed that conditions such as hypertension, hypothyroidism, and diabetes are passed down through genes, the speaker argues that it is actually the body's inability to convert necessary nutrients into usable forms that leads to deficiencies and subsequent diseases. By identifying and addressing these deficiencies through supplementation, individuals can experience significant improvements in their overall health and well-being. The speaker's passion for this subject matter stems from their upbringing on a farm, where they witnessed veterinarians successfully treating sick animals and restoring them to normal function. Additionally, the speaker's remarkable ability for photographic recall further fueled their interest in medicine and healing.

    • This Man Has a Photographic Memory, but It Comes with a Price!Gary Brecka's unique ability to recall information has its downsides, but it has also helped him excel in his studies and pursue a career in science.

Gary Brecka has a remarkable ability to recall vast amounts of information, even if he doesn't fully understand it. This skill, often referred to as a photographic memory, allows him to regurgitate information accurately and with great detail. While it may seem like a gift, there is a downside to this ability. It hinders his ability to read for pleasure, as everything he reads gets recorded and takes up storage in his mind. However, this unique talent has led him to pursue a career in science, where subjects like chemistry and biology require rote memorization. Despite the challenges, Gary has excelled in his studies and even found ways to balance his intense coursework with a social life. Ultimately, he has gravitated towards science and aspires to be an orthopedic surgeon to fix and return function to people.

    • From Analyzing Data to Helping Lives: A Life-Changing RealizationGary Brecka's shift in perspective led him to use data to improve lives, challenge conventional understanding, and prioritize mental clarity for overall well-being.

The speaker, Gary Brecka, underwent a significant shift in perspective regarding the use of data and its impact on human lives. Initially, he approached his work in predicting death as simply analyzing data without acknowledging the human beings on the other side of the spreadsheets. However, as his faith grew and his awareness of the individuals affected by his predictions increased, he realized the importance of using this information to help people live healthier, happier, and longer lives. This realization led him to question his role in predicting death for the monetary gain of investors and instead motivated him to make a positive difference in the field of wellness or functional medicine. Additionally, this conversation highlights the speaker's understanding of human physiology and the potential to improve lifespan and health span by addressing ailments and conditions through proper care and treatment. In particular, the discussion challenges the conventional understanding of attention deficit disorder and emphasizes the significance of degrading thoughts and thought processes for mental clarity and overall well-being.

    • Discover the Surprising Connection Between Mental Health and MethylationMental health conditions like depression and anxiety are not solely caused by external factors, but are deeply connected to the body's ability to produce and regulate neurotransmitters.

Mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety are not solely caused by external factors, but are deeply connected to our physiology. The conversation highlights the significance of methylation, a process that plays a crucial role in refining raw materials, specifically amino acids into neurotransmitters like serotonin. When this methylation process is impaired, it can lead to deficiencies and imbalances in neurotransmitters, ultimately manifesting as depression or anxiety. The prevailing approach of using pharmaceuticals to block neurotransmitter uptake does not address the root cause but instead manages symptoms. The key takeaway emphasizes the importance of restoring adequate levels of neurotransmitters through natural means, supporting the body's ability to produce and regulate them, and highlighting the primal nature of the brain's focus on survival rather than external factors.

    • Discover the surprising similarities between real and perceived anxiety triggers.Recognizing the difference between anxiety with a specific trigger and generalized anxiety can help identify potential physiological imbalances contributing to the latter.

Anxiety can be triggered by both real and perceived threats, and the physiological response to both is identical. Understanding this can help us recognize the presence or absence of fear in anxiety. True anxiety can be pinpointed to a specific trigger, such as fear of heights or claustrophobia. However, there is also anxiety that arises without a specific trigger, known as generalized or idiopathic anxiety. This type of anxiety is of unknown origin and is not related to a specific fear. It is important to distinguish between the two and understand that generalized anxiety may be a result of physiological imbalances rather than external stimuli.

    • Discover the Surprising Connection Between Anxiety and Gut Issues!Gut problems and anxiety often go hand in hand due to neurotransmitters affecting gut motility. Understanding gene mutations and supplementing accordingly can support gut health.

Gut issues and anxiety are often interconnected. Many individuals who suffer from general anxiety or idiopathic anxiety also experience gut problems such as gas, bloating, or irritable bowel syndrome. These conditions are influenced by neurotransmitters and their impact on gut motility. It is important to understand that allergies are consistent and not transient. When people experience gut issues, they often relate it to what they last ate, indicating that it is a matter of gut motility rather than allergies. To restore gut motility, it is necessary to identify gene mutations causing deficiencies and supplement accordingly. Gut motility refers to the pace at which the gut operates, similar to an assembly line in a factory. Any changes in speed or direction can disrupt the entire system.

    • Discover the key to preventing diseases and improving your health! Many health conditions can be improved or prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors, such as anemia, and not just relying on medication to treat symptoms.

Many health conditions can be improved or prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors. It is not enough to simply rely on medication to treat symptoms without considering the underlying causes. By identifying and modifying these risk factors, individuals can greatly impact the trajectory of their health and potentially prevent the development of various diseases. An example of a modifiable risk factor mentioned is anemia, which can worsen conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity due to its impact on oxygen transport in the body. By addressing and modifying anemia, individuals can become more resilient to these conditions and potentially improve their overall health outcomes.

    • Are You Vitamin D3 Deficient? Find Out Now!Vitamin D3 is crucial for cognitive function and immune system strength. Deficiency is common, particularly in darker-skinned populations, and can increase vulnerability to diseases like COVID-19. Sunlight exposure and supplementation are recommended for optimal health.

Vitamin D3 plays a crucial role in our overall health, particularly in relation to cognitive function and immune system strength. It is estimated that around 50% of the global population is clinically deficient in vitamin D3. This deficiency is more prevalent in populations with darker skin tones, as they have a lower ability to produce vitamin D3 from sunlight. Clinical deficiency in vitamin D3 has been linked to increased mortality rates and vulnerability to diseases like COVID-19. Spending adequate time in sunlight can help increase vitamin D3 levels, but supplementation is also recommended. Overall, it is important for everyone to ensure they are getting enough vitamin D3 for optimal health.

    • This misdiagnosis led to unnecessary surgery and caused an early demise.Misdiagnosis and overmedication can have serious consequences on health, emphasizing the importance of accurate diagnosis and mindful medication practices.

Misdiagnosis and medical errors can have serious consequences on a person's health. In this particular case, a deficiency in vitamin D3 led to the misdiagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, resulting in unnecessary joint replacement surgery and a reduction in mobility. These actions then brought forward diseases that wouldn't have been otherwise caught and ultimately caused an early demise. The conversation also highlights the issue of overmedication, with the average American over 50 being on five prescription medications, the long-term effects of which are often unknown. Additionally, the discussion points out the impact of a restless mind on sleep, emphasizing the need to quiet the mind in order to improve sleep quality.

    • Shocking! MTHFR Gene Mutation Affects Mood and Emotional StatesUnderstanding and addressing genetic deficiencies related to methylation can improve overall wellbeing and help with issues like insomnia and mood disorders.

Gene mutations related to methylation can lead to deficiencies in the body, which can cause various conditions and affect mood and emotional states. These gene mutations are not rare, as 44% of the world's population has a gene mutation called MTHFR. One particular gene mutation, MTHFR, impairs the conversion of folate into methylfolate, which is an essential nutrient. Folate is commonly found in the human diet, but folic acid, a man-made chemical used as a supplement, is not naturally occurring. These deficiencies can be addressed through specific supplements, like elmethionine and methyl folate, which are essentially vitamins and amino acids. By understanding and addressing these deficiencies, one can improve their overall wellbeing and address issues such as a racing mind when trying to sleep.

    • You won't believe how your genes affect your health! Our genetic makeup plays a crucial role in how our bodies convert nutrients, and understanding this can guide us in choosing the right supplements for optimal health.

Our body's ability to convert certain nutrients and raw materials is essential for optimal health. When there are genetic mutations or deficiencies in this conversion process, it can lead to various health issues, such as postpartum depression or attention deficit disorder. Taking synthetic supplements, like folic acid or cyanocobalamin, may not be as beneficial as obtaining these nutrients naturally. Understanding our genetic makeup and identifying any deficiencies can help us supplement targeted nutrients to support our body's needs. Additionally, recognizing that these mutations or deficiencies are not necessarily indicators of being "broken," but rather variations in how our bodies process raw materials, can help us approach our health with a more balanced perspective.

    • Discover why procrastination and comfort-seeking can ruin your life! It's important to prioritize our well-being and actively seek solutions that improve our health, rather than succumbing to procrastination and comfort-seeking behaviors that can harm us.

Procrastination can occur when we give equal weight to various distractions and find ways to avoid discomfort. Gary Brecka discusses the tendency to get sidetracked by unrelated activities, like looking at Instagram messages or doing household chores, instead of focusing on important tasks. However, he also highlights the aggressive pursuit of comfort as we age and how it can lead to neglecting our health and accepting various health issues. The example of Dana White, who had given up on thriving due to multiple health problems and reliance on medications, illustrates the need to prioritize our well-being and seek solutions that extend life rather than predict death.

    • Dana White's alarming health conditions put him at risk of shortened life expectancy - here's how he turned it around.Regular health check-ups and proactive lifestyle changes can help improve health and extend life expectancy.

Dana White's health was in a critical state, with alarming levels of various conditions such as high triglycerides, insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, and elevated homocysteine levels. These conditions put him at a high risk for serious health complications and a significantly shortened life expectancy. Upon learning about his health status, Dana immediately recognized the severity of the situation and committed to making significant lifestyle changes. He embraced a prescription ketogenic diet, which was meticulously outlined in a grocery list provided by Gary Brecka. This conversation highlights the importance of regular health check-ups, understanding lab results, and taking proactive steps towards improving one's health to extend life expectancy and prevent potential health crises.

    • Discover the 5 Simple Lifestyle Changes for a Healthier You!By implementing dietary changes and incorporating natural resources like magnetism, oxygen, and light, individuals can improve their health, lose weight, and reduce the risk of diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. Breathwork and grounding techniques further enhance mental and emotional well-being, while small steps towards a healthier lifestyle can lead to transformative results and a longer life expectancy.

Making simple lifestyle changes can have a significant impact on one's health and overall well-being. By following a specific diet and utilizing natural resources like magnetism, oxygen, and light, individuals can improve their blood work, lose weight, and reduce the risk of developing diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Moreover, something as accessible as breathwork can have a profound impact on mental and emotional states, with oxygen playing a crucial role in the chemical makeup of emotions. Additionally, connecting with the earth through activities like grounding and earthing can help maintain alkaline levels in the body, promoting better health. Taking small steps towards a healthier lifestyle can result in remarkable transformations and a longer life expectancy.

    • These 5 morning rituals will transform your well-being overnight!Implementing practices like grounding, deep breathing, sunlight exposure, oxygen utilization, and cold water plunges can significantly improve our overall health and well-being when done in the morning.

Implementing specific practices upon waking up can have a positive impact on our overall well-being. Starting the day by connecting with the surface of the earth and performing breath work, such as deep breathing exercises, can help reset our oxygen levels and improve our mood. Exposing ourselves to natural sunlight in the first 45 minutes of the day can also assist in resetting our circadian rhythm. Additionally, utilizing oxygen masks or oxygen concentrators, especially when combined with mild exercise, can enhance the oxygen storage in our blood and contribute to a superhuman state. Cold water plunges, while initially believed to have anti-inflammatory effects, are now known to activate cold shock proteins, which provide various benefits to our overall health.

    • Find out how immersing in cold water can transform your body!Immersing in cold water for a few minutes each day can improve physical health, muscle repair, and even boost mood, highlighting the importance of embracing discomfort for well-being.

Immersing oneself in cold water for 3 to 6 minutes a day can have significant benefits for the body. Cold water exposure leads to peripheral vasoconstriction, which forces oxygen into the core and up to the brain. It also activates brown fat, which is involved in thermogenesis. Cold water immersion has been found to increase the rate of protein synthesis and muscle repair, making it effective for stripping fat off the body. Additionally, the rush of oxygen to the head during cold water exposure can have a profound impact on mood. The conversation also highlights the importance of challenging the body and embracing discomfort, as comfort and regulation can accelerate aging and weaken natural defense mechanisms. Learning to be comfortable with discomfort can have a positive effect on overall well-being and emotional resilience.

    • Discover the Surprising Connection Between Emotions and Memories! Our emotional state not only affects our memories but also influences our future decisions, emphasizing the need to manage and control our emotions for better outcomes.

Our emotional state has a direct impact on our memories and future decisions. The amygdala, which is responsible for emotions, is the sole gateway to the hippocampus, where memories are stored. This explains why we can vividly recall past events that triggered strong emotions. Moreover, our memory connects to the prefrontal cortex, influencing our future actions and decisions. Therefore, our current emotional state determines our future outcomes. To control our emotions, we need to provide our bodies with the right nutrients and actively break negative emotional cycles. Additionally, starting the day in an elevated emotional state can help us handle daily challenges and setbacks with resilience. It is crucial to prioritize sleep when traveling to maintain our well-being and emotional state. Overall, understanding and managing our emotions can significantly impact our lives.

    • Want more energy while traveling? Follow these simple eating tips!Prioritizing consistent sleep and mindful eating can boost energy levels. Adjusting eating habits and avoiding carbs during travel can help regulate circadian rhythm and maintain focus.

Maintaining a consistent sleeping window and being mindful of when and what we eat can greatly impact our circadian rhythm and overall energy levels. By aligning our eating habits with our new time zone when traveling, we can help adjust our internal clock more effectively. It is important not to eat during our normal sleeping window, especially in a different time zone, as it can disrupt our circadian rhythm and make it difficult for our bodies to adjust. Additionally, avoiding carbohydrates on flights can prevent the diversion of blood from the brain to digestion, helping us feel more focused and energized during travel. Ultimately, prioritizing energy and making conscious food choices can greatly benefit our overall well-being.

    • Discover the Surprising Key to Optimal Health, No Supplements NeededOptimal health is achievable through basic elements and alignment with nature, emphasizing simplicity and balance, without the need for complicated supplements or extreme discipline.

Optimal health is found in basic elements such as oxygen, light, and whole foods. Gary emphasizes that complicated supplements and exotic ingredients are not necessary for achieving optimal health. He believes in the power of the human body to heal itself and the importance of the mind in healing. By getting back to the basics and aligning with mother nature, individuals can discover a state of optimal health beyond imagination. Gary's message is focused on simplicity and the importance of returning to fundamental principles. Additionally, he shares that being overly disciplined and hard on oneself can be counterproductive and unsustainable in the long run. It is vital to find balance and not deprive oneself of simple pleasures. Through his work with TENX Health and his online platforms, Gary aims to provide valuable resources for starting the journey towards a healthier life.

Moment 165: This Exercise Enhances Mood, Memory & Concentration: David Raichlen

Moment 165: This Exercise Enhances Mood, Memory & Concentration: David Raichlen
In this moment, leading professor of evolutionary biology, David Raichlen discusses how to boost the brain benefits that come from exercise. Most people know that exercise can improve cognitive function, but don’t realise that different sort of exercise, like cardio or strength training, can provide different types of neurological benefits. David says that whilst all exercise is beneficial to the brain, research shows that the best sort of physical activity is a combination of physical and cognitive challenges. This helps the brain function as it copies how humans evolved to find food and survive. So this could mean that the next time you go for a run, choose the great outdoors over the treadmill and try different routes you haven’t taken before. #74 How Diet Can Save Your Mental Health with Professor Felice Jacka

#74 How Diet Can Save Your Mental Health with Professor Felice Jacka

We all know that a poor diet negatively impacts our physical health. In fact, it is now the leading cause of early death in men and number two in women. But it’s not only our physical health that is affected – the effects on our mental health can also be devastating. This week, I am joined by world leading expert in the field of nutritional psychiatry, Professor Felice Jacka, to discuss her ground-breaking research into the link between food and our mental health. We discuss why lifestyle medicine should be the starting point for many mental health conditions and why there is an urgent need to train medical practitioners to give such lifestyle advice. We delve into the important role the gut microbiome plays in this area and how a diet rich in diversity is key. We also talk about the link between a mother’s diet in pregnancy and their child’s emotional health. At a time where the modern food environment is so broken and depression and anxiety are on the rise, this conversation is more important than ever. It really is a fascinating listen – I hope you enjoy it!
