    • Building community connections in uncertain timesEngage with your community through volunteering, politics, or helping hands to build bonds and prepare for disasters.

Community connection and engagement are essential in uncertain times. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer network, emphasizes the importance of building relationships with those around us, not only for social bonds but also for preparedness during natural disasters. Meanwhile, in the world of politics, the midterm elections are approaching, and tensions are high. The US military is deploying troops to the Mexican border to prevent the arrival of a migrant caravan, and the US and Iran are engaging in economic sanctions, with Trump using a Game of Thrones reference to announce them. These events highlight the importance of community, whether it's building connections with neighbors or standing together in times of political turmoil. So, take a page from Neighbor to Neighbor and engage with your community, whether it's through volunteering, politics, or simply lending a helping hand to a neighbor in need.

    • Celebrities campaigning, India's tall statue, Midterm electionsCelebrities campaign, India builds tall statue, Midterms decide house control, Democrats aim for 23 seats, Republicans defend senate, Oprah Winfrey canvasses, Voting impacted by celebrities

During this election eve, the importance of the midterm elections is evident as celebrities are actively campaigning for votes, while India unveiled the world's tallest statue dedicating it to a freedom fighter, despite the high cost. India could have saved money by building a statue of Gandhi instead. Meanwhile, the media is in full force, with flashy graphics and holograms, as all 435 house seats and many senate seats are up for grabs. Democrats need to gain 23 seats to take control of the house, while defending their seats in the senate. Republicans, led by Vice President Mike Pence, could maintain their majority with a 50-50 tie. Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities are making a difference by going door-to-door, but their presence could also discourage some voters from leaving their homes to avoid missing them.

    • Midterm Elections: A Pivotal Moment in American PoliticsThe 2018 midterms could shift the political landscape, allowing Democrats to block Trump's agenda or Republicans to push for more controversial policies. Record-breaking early voter turnout emphasizes the importance of individual votes.

The outcome of the 2018 midterm elections could significantly impact American politics. If the Democrats win control of the House or Senate, they may be able to block Trump's nominees, legislation, and potentially access his tax returns. Conversely, a Republican victory could embolden Trump to push for even more controversial policies. Additionally, the midterms are seeing record-breaking early voter turnout, with over 34 million votes already cast. Despite polling data, it's crucial for individuals to vote based on their beliefs and convictions, as people's stated voting intentions in polls may not always reflect reality. In summary, the midterm elections are a pivotal moment in American politics, and the outcome will have far-reaching consequences.

    • Focusing on solving problems over pleasing pollsGovernor Kasich emphasized the importance of prioritizing people and problem-solving over politics, sharing his successful policies in Ohio and staying true to his values despite unconventional solutions.

Governor John Kasich of Ohio believes that effective leadership means focusing on solving problems rather than pleasing the polls. He shared how his philosophy of "no one is left behind" led to successful policies in Ohio, such as the first earned income tax credit and expanding Medicaid. Kasich emphasized that being successful in public life requires a commitment to making a difference, even if it means unconventional solutions. He also highlighted his unique position as a Republican who did not endorse Donald Trump, illustrating the importance of staying true to one's values. Overall, Kasich's interview underscored the importance of prioritizing people and problem-solving over politics.

    • Connecting on a deeper level and solving problems togetherEffective politics requires empathy, understanding individual struggles, and working together to create unity and solve problems, rather than focusing on divisive issues.

Effective politics involves connecting with people on a deeper level and working together to solve problems, rather than focusing solely on divisive issues. John Kasich, a former Republican Governor of Ohio, emphasized this during a discussion, sharing his belief in positive populism and the importance of touching people's souls. He highlighted the importance of empathy and understanding individual struggles, which can lead to trust and unity. Despite political differences, Kasich endorsed Mike DeWine, a fellow Republican, based on his heart and dedication to helping others. The ultimate goal, according to Kasich, is to create a sense of unity and togetherness, as exemplified by the scene in the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody" where everyone comes together to enjoy the music.

    • Look beyond party lines and focus on candidates' meritsJohn Kasich encourages voters to consider character and actions of candidates, not just party labels, for change from the bottom up.

It's important for individuals to look beyond party lines and focus on the merits of the candidate, rather than their political affiliation. John Kasich, a former Republican governor, expressed his concern about the current political climate and the potential for an independent run in the 2020 election if the major parties veer too far to the left or right. He emphasized the importance of grassroots movements and the power of individuals to drive change from the bottom up. Ultimately, Kasich encouraged voters to consider the character and actions of the candidates, rather than their party labels.

    • Respect and like one another for a functional societyEngage in democracy, respect each other, and work together to overcome challenges to build a functional society.

Despite our differences and disagreements, it's essential to respect and like one another to build a connected and functional society. Governor John Kasich emphasized the importance of debates and healthy arguments, but warned against operating in an atmosphere of suspicion and disrespect. Senator Cory Booker echoed this sentiment, sharing his belief that America's strength lies in its ability to overcome adversity. He encouraged people to engage in democracy and take responsibility for its future, emphasizing that the arc of the moral universe may not naturally bend towards justice, but we have the power to make it do so. In essence, it's up to us to create meaningful social bonds and work together to overcome challenges.

    • The Impact of Trump's Presidency on American PoliticsDespite challenges, Americans remain hopeful and determined to make their voices heard. Perceptions of Democratic politicians as weak persist, and if they win the presidency, addressing deep-rooted issues will be crucial.

The political landscape has been significantly impacted by the presence of Donald Trump in the White House. Some argue that his election served as a necessary evil to awaken the sleeping giant of American democracy, with more people engaging in politics than ever before. This renewed energy is evident in the record number of women, people of color, and young people running for office and voting. Hope, according to the speaker, is an internal conviction that despair will not have the last word. Despite the challenges, many Americans are determined to respond and make their voices heard. Regarding the Democrats, there is a perception that they are poor politicians, often seen as giving in to the opposition instead of fighting back with equal force. The speaker, who has lived in an inner-city community for over 20 years, expresses frustration with the existing issues plaguing America, such as a criminal justice system that favors the wealthy and guilty over the poor and innocent. If the Democrats were to win the presidency, it remains to be seen how they would address these deep-rooted issues and bring about meaningful change for people on the ground.

    • Working together towards a common purposeFocusing on shared values and addressing issues like criminal justice reform, economic inequality, and investment in underserved communities can help rekindle a sense of collective commitment and civic grace.

To move forward as a nation, we need to focus on what we're for and work together towards a common purpose, rekindling a sense of collective commitment and civic grace. This includes addressing issues like criminal justice reform and economic inequality, ensuring investment in underserved communities, and defining ourselves by our shared values rather than what we're against. The passing of the bill between Cory Booker (Democrat) and Tim Scott (Republican) in the US Senate, aimed at attracting investment to low-income areas, is an example of bipartisan cooperation towards a common goal. The sense of common pain and loss of purpose in America requires leaders to articulate a clear vision and lead with civic grace.

    • Love as a guiding principleLove is more than tolerance. It's respecting others' dignity, recognizing interconnectedness, striving for justice, and translating to action.

Love, not tolerance, should be the guiding principle in America. Love encompasses respecting others' dignity and worth, recognizing the interconnectedness of our destinies, and striving for justice on various issues such as education, criminal justice, and economic inequality. Love translates to action, and the outcome of elections can significantly impact people's lives. Therefore, it's crucial to care about the election results and consider the implications for fellow Americans. Ultimately, what defines us as a nation is not race or religion but the shared values outlined in the Declaration of Independence.

    • Supporting each other during challenging timesDuring uncertain times, it's important to build stronger connections with neighbors and help each other out. Remember, we're all in this together.

During challenging times, it's essential to come together as a community and support one another. This was the spirit of the American Revolution, as expressed in the Declaration of Independence, where individuals pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to each other. This sentiment holds true today, especially in uncertain times when communities can feel disconnected. Neighbor to Neighbor, a California volunteer network, encourages this by empowering individuals to build stronger connections with their neighbors and help each other out in times of need. In the spirit of this commitment, it's crucial to remember that we're all in this together and to show up for each other, whether it's by lending a helping hand or standing together during natural disasters. And, of course, don't forget to exercise your right to vote for those who represent your values and beliefs. So, let's all make a pledge to each other, just like our founding fathers did, and commit to making our communities stronger and more connected.

#7 We Can All Do Better

#7 We Can All Do Better

I was planning on releasing an episode from another amazing guest but given recent events, I think it’s an important time to stop and reflect about a new era that we have well and truly entered. This is an episode about tolerance and finding common ground to overcome some of the biggest problems the world is facing. These thoughts have been weighing heavy on my mind for a few years now, but over the past few months I’ve been putting it altogether. Challenging my beliefs and assumptions. Although many of us are genuinely concerned with the direction the world is heading in, I believe that we can all do more. We can all do better. I was honestly a bit nervous about releasing this episode, because I don’t want to sound like I’m coming to the defence, or attacking any certain type of person. I am not discrediting real experiences or feelings from people either. I also don’t want to come across as preachy. My aim is to open up dialogue and challenge you to think further about your role, whatever your opinion is, and how you can do better. The purpose of this podcast is not only about doing good and hearing about different ways to do good. But it’s also about challenging misconceptions and challenging beliefs, ideas and assumptions. It’s open having open discussion and critique in a supportive community that cares about a sustainable future for every being. The fact that I even feel the need to preface this episode with that little disclaimer means that I am anxious about the response that it’s going to get, even though the whole point is to open dialogue. How ironic is that! Despite my anxiety, I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas, so long as they’re constructive.
