As scary as that notion is to some folks, and we’re not here to judge- This week, in celebration of the spookiest time of year, I thought we would change things up, and have a bit of good old fashioned storytime. For that true, vintage, horror vibe, we are reaching deep into the stacks of dusty old stories, to an era when a person could pen a 3800 word poem, and amidst its circumlocutions, enounce a tale of woe to last the ages. A story destined to become a legend, woven into the very fabric of reality in the form of memorable lines that live on as permanent memes of the english language, for who among us old enough to grow (wanted or unwanted) whiskers on our bodies does not know and has not wittily quipped once upon a thirsty but rainy hike, boat ride, etc- “Water water everywhere, and not a drop to drink!”, probably to the hearty groans and eye rolls of any companions. Or, perhaps just as well known, yet equally obscure to most in its origins, the universal oath of a lamented but inescapable burden, or blame to be borne- “It’s an albatross around their neck”. These classic zingers and more are to be discovered today, as The Baked and Awake Show presents to you, faithful listener, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere”
A few points of interest about the author before diving in, that we may better appreciate them.
- Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born on October 21, 1772, almost 246 years ago to the day of this recording. Happy Birthday, Mister Coleridge, may you rest in peace.
- Coleridge was British by birth, and had a fascination with and a desire to create and live in a reformed, communal lifestyle in the “New World”, whereby people would live under “Equal Governance by All” or a Pantisocracy, which took its inspiration from Coleridge’s affinity for Plato’s Republic. Coleridge never realized this dream, as his co-creators of the vision for the Pantisocracy eventually matured, and took their rightful places amongst the elite of British Society.
- Coleridge was well known to have had financial troubles all his life, living a lifestyle of an affluent Creative mostly at the expense of his family and friends. In other words, he was your typical starving artist in his time, though somewhat respected nonetheless, due to his obvious brilliance and prolific bibliography.
- Coleridge was close friends with and strongly influenced by the well known author William Wordsworth, under whose’ sphere of influence Coleridge’s writing style evolved from exuberant and light hearted, to the compelling voice that would eventually cement his place amongst the leaders of the European Romantic movement of his era.
- Amongst his many works of poetry and fiction, Coleridge also penned a ten issue Progressive Political Journal in 1796 called “The Watchmen”. This of course reminds me of my recent episode where we discussed Conspiracy and Occult Disclosure in Comic Books and Movies, available in the podcast RSS feed, and with an accompanying video presentation on my YouTube channel, where we mentioned The famous Comic Book from the 80’s of nearly the same name.
- A bit sadly for me, we come to know that Coleridge struggled with Opium addiction for his entire adult life, and though he sought treatment for it a number of times, he never was able to kick the habit. One wonders if he had only had access to as much Cannabis hashish as Opium, perhaps he might have been able to free himself of the need for that powerful and somewhat consumptive (of its user) narcotic. It doesn’t take much imagination on the part of worldly readers of The Rime, to see the influence of Coleridge’s struggles with the drug within the lines of the poem, rich with language and symbolism of the classic tropes of sin and the consequences of our actions, judgement from on high of an omnipotent God, but also Karma, and the simple forgiveness of our fellow Man for what evils we have done.
- Finally, one more interesting work by Coleridge, for those of you for whom this episode sparks some interest in learning more about the man who gave us such a legendary story as The Rime- an unfinished but illuminating (as illuminating about the author itself, as in its inherent wisdom) essay entitled “Hints towards the formation of a more comprehensive theory of life”, written later in the artist’s life and not published until 1848, a full fourteen years after his death on July 25th 1834.
- In addition to my reading of the story in full, I am including both a link to, and a downloadable mp3 of, a radio adaptation of The Rime, performed on an older radio show called The Hermit’s Cave and presented by a troupe called The Weird Circle that was a lot of fun to listen to. I invite you all to listen to that version of the story as well, and decide for yourselves if the original work is superior, or is the interpretation of a modern Playwright perhaps more digestible to our ears today, for as you will soon hear, the language and poetry of Coleridge’s time was quite distinct from the present..
Steve’s Introduction: We join the tale of the Ancient Mariner with a young man, innocent of the accosting he is about to be subjected to- standing outside a wedding celebration, of which he is a close relative of the Groom himself. Our guest, taking in the evening air and dare we speculate, perhaps packing his pipe bowl- He prepares to enjoy a moment of quiet before joining the festivities in earnest. Alas, the Celebrant’s reverie is soon interrupted by an approaching stranger, the wizened figure of an old, old, Man of the Seas..
PART ONE
It is an ancient Mariner,
And he stoppeth one of three.
'By thy long grey beard and glittering eye,
Now wherefore stopp'st thou me?
The Bridegroom's doors are opened wide,
And I am next of kin;
The guests are met, the feast is set:
May'st hear the merry din.'
He holds him with his skinny hand,
'There was a ship,' quoth he.
'Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!'
Eftsoons his hand dropt he.
He holds him with his glittering eye--
The Wedding-Guest stood still,
And listens like a three years' child:
The Mariner hath his will...
SC… I hope you’ve enjoyed this reading of the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, a wonderful work of horror AND poetry that I hope is new to more than a few of you, as I believe it certainly deserves its place in the annals of the greatest stories ever told. One can’t help but notice, when reading these words from two centuries ago, that at the time, the written and especially the printed word represented what 4K HD TV’s do to us today- the absolute zenith of entertainment and educational technology! Coleridge clearly crafts the words on the page in numerous places not simply to rhyme, but to make the reader smile, almost chuckle in the midst of the dismal events of the doomed mariner’s adventure, because of the at times hilarious visual gag on paper between two words. It’s completely lost in the spoken performance, and for that I sincerely apologize. One last observation that came to me unbidden, but which inspired a quick web search investigation that quickly revealed that indeed, this question has been asked and answered- but nonetheless I pose this to you, dear listener:

Welcome back, it's been a while, but we’re back together again. Consider this a test to weed out all the fair weather listeners- if you’re still here, you passed the trial! There will be cake served at the end of this podcast for all. Now, I’ve been keeping busy as I’m sure you all have in your own subjectively protagonistic worlds. Everyone in my family and circle as far as I know, is doing pretty well, certainly nothing to report or to complain about. I trust and hope that wherever you are listening to this right now, you are well. Well enough anyway to take a little time to sit for a few moments with me while I tell you a couple of stories That I found interesting. Maybe join me for a puff, maybe don’t. Both states of being are compatible with the vibe here on Baked and Awake. First up today I want to more or less introduce a topic that I really was only ever dimly aware of- a technology semi lost to history, but from the not very distant past as I see it. That technology is something out of a steampunk novel or fantasy film, or so I kind of thought, until I stumbled on a video where else but on YouTube (love it or hate it YT has the most content anywhere- don’t @ me). The subject I’m talking about is called Transport Gasifier technology. In short, cars, trucks, trains and boats/ships running on biomass fuels. Wood Powered vehicles. Coal, Charcoal, Wood Pellets, Even garbage (picturing the Doc stuffing rotten banana peels into the delorean’s flux capacitor or whatever it was at the beginning?ending of Back to the future II before flying off into space time once again…)

- Help me with this story by sharing your experiences- Is the Self Storage Industry a Scam? $5Billion in unused goods in people’s homes, cluttered garages and homes, moves for work and more create the need for self storage industry. 10% of households in US rented a unit in 2020? Deaths, defaults, and abandonments mean much of these goods stored go unclaimed. Death, Divorce, Displacement, Disaster causes for needing storage. $38 billion market. The industry has greatly benefited from the covid pandemic. Public Storage (biggest co) Initially numbers went down, then went way up due to a robust Housing Market (read: housing bubble), High Earning employees working from home, and an abandonment of expensive urban markets as people embraced new hybrid and remote work models caused a strong growth in demand for Self Storage of nearly 3% in less than one year. Doesn’t sound like all that much but remember Public Storage makes about $3.5 Billion a year as of 2019, so around 10.5 million. Covid was described by the CEO of smaller Self Storage company Neighbor as “A major growth driver for our business”.

In politics and economics, a Potemkin village is any construction (literal or figurative) whose sole purpose is to provide an external façade to a country that is faring poorly, making people believe that the country is faring better. The term comes from stories of a fake portable village built by Grigory Potemkin, former lover of Empress Catherine II, solely to impress the Empress during her journey to Crimea in 1787. While modern historians agree that accounts of this portable village are exaggerated, the original story was that Potemkin erected phony portable settlements along the banks of the Dnieper River in order to impress the Russian Empress; the structures would be disassembled after she passed, and re-assembled farther along her route to be viewed again as if another example.
Dead Internet Theory- what is it and why do we care?
Hello, welcome back once again to the Baked and Awake Podcast. I know it’s been a few weeks since I read you all the story of The Smoky God, which if you missed it came back in September in two parts- but we are back together at the desk today to talk about a number of more contemporary matters, some of which I’m openly asking for your assistance with as regards fully understanding the matters described in the contents of one particular website I found recently while researching the initial topic, The Dead Internet Theory. Sounds awesome, doesn’t it? Dystopian even. I’m sure there’s an episode of Black Mirror about this out there somewhere, you know I never finished that particular anthology probably because it was all too believable to me, maybe. So, to explain a bit- the Dead Internet Theory seems to have come into existence just over the past year now online in forums like 4chan, reddit, and one much lesser known and truly unique community that I learned of called Agora Road, where threads discussing the extent of the theory have been written and heavily commented upon. Personally, I think I came across this on YouTube, where just a few but quite decent short pieces have been made on the topic, and I’ll leave links to them below- and those videos sent me off a researching, including to a referenced recent journalistic piece written on The Dead Internet that was printed in The Atlantic back in August. I’ll also be linking to the full article, but please be advised I believe The Atlantic only lets you read one or two articles per month without subscribing to the mag, so if you’ve just been bouncing off their website daily lately reading all their content like some kind of High falootin news addict, well you might just bump up against their paywall. In that case I guess listen to me for a few more minutes then go find those videos in the description or show notes. Long time listeners of the podcast will probably be well on their way already in terms of deducing what this is all about. This theory is right in line with topics we have been talking about for years now here on the podcast, right? Deepfakes, Artificial Intelligence, Pervasive Mass Surveillance and Social Engineering- Cybernetics, Silent Weapons for Quiet Wars. Those are all homework assignments for new listeners by the way. Pretty much every phrase I just uttered there is a past show topic on one or more occasions, so feel free to dive into those archives because that’s what they’re there for, and every show I’ve ever produced includes a detailed show notes section with the resources I used to come up with the episode you’re listening to.
And now, let’s have a look at the think piece from The Atlantic to get a clear picture of what this dreadfully believable theory is all about. The piece was I think very well written by its creator, Kaitlyn Tiffany, so let’s, shall we?
Former Colleague of mine from LinkedIn: Last summer googles results after the 5 or 6 item totally turned to garbage link bait, ripped and sliced diced sentence fragments that had logical meaning to the index but only negative net value. Especally frustrating if it was a technical paper that had citations, references to it were always to some sort of site that was craled and had its ip address in the results. Its gotten better, but it was a dark hole there for a while.
DEADGPK YT: I have only heard of it a few weeks ago as a full theory. Before there have been many things about AI being able to create things such as music, art and I believe there's an AI that even runs a YouTube channel. I have also looked into the digital influencers that have become popular or the years and they started around 2017 if i remember. While it's an interesting theory and definitely worth discussions, I'm not totally convinced it to the point of total AI take over. But it seems that it is definitely headed in that direction. Much of the interaction on social media seems manufactured to the point where you will see several accounts post the same exact thing. Bots are definitely used these days and it for the spread of misinformation imo.
Anecdotal from Nicole: Yesterday Nicole told me that she saw a post (likely on IG) that said something about “Conservatives are now waiting for Progressive accounts on Twitter to promulgate tweets that they know to be false out on the platform, and only when they know the meme has gained sufficient traction to maybe get to trending, they mass report the posts therefore often causing many people to be either suspended or banned from the platform. I said “that sounds like Culture Hacking to me”
