Disparities in access to fair housing in Gastonia continue, federal study shows | Tuesday, March 12, 2024

The City of Gastonia is having a third-party study done that analyzes barriers to housing and gives in-depth recommendations on how to remove them.

The goal is to implement city policies that create more affordable options and address disparities in housing. However, the same study was done five years ago and according to the research, the city hasn't addressed some of the identified disparities from 2019.

Gastonia City Council’s Housing Committee received an update Monday on the federally required housing study that’s done every five years. It found five main issues that are making it harder for people to find fair housing in Gastonia.

Sports betting launches in NC today. Here's what you need to know | Monday, March 11, 2024

North Carolina will become the latest state to legalize mobile sports betting, starting at noon on Monday. Estimates suggest online betting will bring in nearly $65 million in additional tax revenue for North Carolina in the first fiscal year.

As part of the legislation, additional resources were directed toward the NC Department of Health and Human Resources to help those who might struggle with gambling addiction after Monday's rollout.

"Gambling can affect anyone.  It affects folks from all walks of life, all communities," Kelly Crosbie, director of the division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Services, said.

NCDHHS launched the website morethanagame.nc.gov to offer resources and support to those struggling with a gambling problem.

SC bill allowing open carry passes, heads to governor for signature | Thursday, March 7, 2024

South Carolinians may soon be able to openly carry a weapon.

It comes as both state House and Senate lawmakers officially pass the Second Amendment Preservation Act, also known as South Carolina Constitutional Carry. The bill allows anyone who can legally own a gun to carry it openly.

Advocating for its passage on the House floor Tuesday was Republican Representative Brandon Cox of Berkeley County. He sponsored the bill and said more than 20 states around the country already have similar laws.

The Democratic attorney general and the Republican lieutenant governor won North Carolina’s primaries for governor on Tuesday, setting the stage for what will be an expensive and high-stakes November contest in a state that the two parties see as a pivotal battleground. Josh Stein and Mark Robinson, each of whom turned back multiple party rivals, will present stark contrasts for voters in the ninth-largest state’s fall elections. In separate election-night victory speeches, each candidate laid out policy and individual differences and said their opponent's victory would harm the state's economy.

Nikki Haley to rally voters in Charlotte: Friday, March 1, 2024

Nikki Haley to rally voters in Charlotte: Friday, March 1, 2024

Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley is holding a campaign rally in Charlotte on Friday, ahead of the North Carolina primary election on Super Tuesday. The event will be held at Suffolk Punch in South End on Friday. Haley's visit comes one day after President Joe Biden and GOP leader Donald Trump visited the southern border in Texas. Many political experts say Biden's immigration policy could be a huge hurdle for him to clear in November but there are still questions about how Trump would handle the border after his failed wall during his first term.

What would happen without a Leap Day? More than you might think

What would happen without a Leap Day? More than you might think

Let's have a look at some of the numbers, history and lore behind the (not quite) every four year phenom that adds a 29th day to February.

The math is mind-boggling in a layperson sort of way and down to fractions of days and minutes. There's even a leap second occasionally, but there's no hullabaloo when that happens. The thing to know is that leap year exists, in large part, to keep the months in sync with annual events, including equinoxes and solstices, according to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. Let's connect the dots.
