Threads vs Twitter & Millionaire Sam Ovens Doesn't Believe In A.I. Hype

    enJuly 11, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • The Debate Between Threads and Twitter: A Matter of Personal PreferenceThreads and Twitter offer unique strengths, with Threads promising a more focused experience and Twitter providing a vast user base and real-time nature. Ultimately, the choice depends on personal preference and the type of content valued.

The debate between Threads and Twitter is a hot topic, with each platform having its unique strengths and weaknesses. I, for one, was intrigued by Threads after hearing about it just before its launch. My initial reaction was positive, as I found Twitter's feed to be filled with content that wasn't always enjoyable or productive. However, I've found myself aligning with Team Zuckerberg in this battle, not just because of the owner of the company, but because of his impressive rebranding and the likability he's managed to cultivate. Ultimately, the choice between the two platforms comes down to personal preference and the type of content one values most. The bull case for Threads lies in its potential to offer a more focused and engaging experience, while the bear case argues that Twitter's vast user base and real-time nature make it a more valuable platform. In the end, both platforms have their merits, and it's up to each individual user to decide which one suits them best.

    • Public perception of individuals and businesses can changeRelatability, hard work, and personal lives can shift negative public sentiment. Streamline operations with a single source of truth for businesses.

The public perception of individuals, particularly successful ones, can be influenced by various factors beyond their control. Mark Zuckerberg and LeBron James are two examples of individuals who faced negative public sentiment but turned it around through their actions and achievements. Their relatability, hard work, and personal lives became talking points that shifted the narrative. Similarly, businesses face their own challenges, and having a single source of truth like HubSpot's customer platform can help streamline operations and improve the customer experience. As for Elon Musk, his actions and words may evoke strong reactions, but it's essential to remember that public perception is not always a reflection of reality.

    • Mark Zuckerberg's new app, Threads, reaches 100 million users in a week, making it the fastest-growing product ever.Threads, a new social media app from Mark Zuckerberg, rapidly gained 100 million users in its first week, outpacing all previous records for growth.

Threads, a new social media app created by Mark Zuckerberg, is experiencing rapid growth, reaching 100 million users within the first week of its launch. This makes it the fastest-growing product of all time. The app, which is a spin-off of Instagram, has the potential to surpass Twitter in size if 20% of Instagram's user base were to join. Zuckerberg's active engagement on the platform, including a tweet on the day of launch, has contributed to its popularity. The app is attracting a new market of people who were not active on Twitter, expanding the market rather than poaching users. However, the success of Threads hinges on whether the idea of the app appeals to a larger audience or if Twitter's execution was the issue for those who left the platform. The execution of the app, including its feed and user experience, is expected to be a significant improvement over Twitter's. Additionally, the app's ad platform is expected to be superior to Twitter's, based on Facebook's reputation for effective ad platforms.

    • Can Threads compete with Twitter's 1 billion user base?Despite Instagram's large user base, Threads' success hinges on unique features and improvements to differentiate it from Twitter's established presence and influential content.

While Instagram's potential user base of 1 billion could make it a formidable competitor to Twitter, the success of a standalone app like Threads hinges on several factors. The graveyard of failed Facebook standalone apps raises doubts about its ability to attract and retain users. Moreover, Twitter's established presence with news, sports, and influential content, along with its text-based format, gives it an edge over Threads. Additionally, Twitter's existing user base, which includes journalists, athletes, and other key content creators, could lead to significant churn for Threads. Ultimately, the success of Threads will depend on its ability to offer unique features and improvements that set it apart from Twitter.

    • New social media platform lacks Direct Messages and complete feature setThe new social media platform's absence of Direct Messages and incomplete feature set could limit its appeal and long-term success, but Elon Musk's involvement and potential new features might attract users.

The new social media platform being discussed has some significant drawbacks, including the lack of Direct Messages and a less-than-complete feature set, which might limit its appeal and long-term success. The absence of DMs is a major issue for users, as it's a common communication method on other popular social media platforms. Additionally, the platform's incomplete feature set, which is missing some key elements compared to established platforms like Twitter, might make it less attractive to users. The creators who have built large followings on Twitter might also be reluctant to start over on a new platform. However, some experts believe that the platform could still be successful, as Elon Musk's involvement and the potential for new features could attract a significant user base. Ultimately, the success of the platform will depend on how well it addresses these issues and differentiates itself from existing social media platforms.

    • A cultural shift towards positivity is leading to a decline in Twitter's popularityThe emergence of more positive and inclusive social media platforms, like Threads, is predicted to surpass Twitter in popularity due to a cultural shift towards positivity and the technical capabilities of newer platforms.

Mark Zuckerberg's expertise lies in consumer social media, and he is likely to dominate in this domain due to his experience and resources. The emerging social media platform, Threads, is predicted to surpass Twitter in popularity within the next few years due to its more positive and inclusive culture. Twitter, on the other hand, has struggled to maintain a positive user experience and has reached a growth ceiling. Facebook and Instagram, with their larger user base and experience in managing content, are better positioned to address hateful content and abuse, making them more appealing alternatives for users. The shift towards a more positive online community is particularly noticeable among younger generations, who have grown up using social media platforms like TikTok that prioritize kindness and positivity. This cultural shift, coupled with the technical capabilities of newer platforms, is likely to lead to a decline in Twitter's popularity.

    • Transforming Negative Aspects into Positive ExperiencesCompanies can improve negative aspects of their platforms to create enjoyable experiences, boost morale, and generate excitement. Be mindful of sensitive topics during social situations to avoid embarrassing situations.

Companies, like Meta, have the ability to transform negative aspects of their platforms into positive experiences. The YouTube comments used to be a notorious cesspool, but Meta improved the situation, making them an enjoyable and sometimes even funny part of the video experience. Similarly, the Meta employee's enthusiasm for the threads project showed how a successful launch can boost morale and create excitement within a company, which was much-needed for Facebook amidst negative PR. However, it's essential to be mindful of sensitive topics during social situations, such as conversations about money, to avoid embarrassing situations. Despite some individuals' obliviousness to social norms, it's crucial to respect the comfort of others and adjust our conversations accordingly.

    • Unexpected experiences and their outcomesUnexpected experiences can lead to disappointment or frustration, but they can also offer unexpected connections and opportunities. Stay open to new experiences and the unexpected connections they may bring.

Sometimes unexpected experiences can lead to disappointment or frustration, but they can also offer unexpected connections and opportunities. In the first story, a man's excitement about trying the best hot chocolate at a recommended spot turned sour when he didn't like it and the waiter tried to force him to finish it. In the second story, a friend's insistence on calling a restaurant to correct a mistake led to an awkward interaction. However, in the third story, a chance encounter at a Subway led to a heartwarming moment between two strangers, reminding the speaker of the importance of human connection. Despite the initial frustration, these experiences ultimately reminded the speaker of the importance of being open to new experiences and the unexpected connections that can come from them.

    • Unexpected experiences can lead to memorable encountersUnexpected moments, even embarrassing ones, can bring unique connections and equality among individuals.

Unexpected experiences, even those involving embarrassing moments, can lead to memorable encounters and unique connections with others. The story shared involves an encounter at Taco Bell where a man boldly farted in public, leaving everyone stunned and in awe of his audacity. Despite the embarrassing situation, the speaker was impressed by the man's confidence and the shared experience brought a sense of equality among the individuals present. Additionally, the speaker expressed his admiration for the innovation and great taste of Taco Bell's menu, turning the conversation towards the positive aspects of the experience. Overall, this story highlights the unexpected and memorable moments that can arise in everyday life.

    • From large business to community platform for creatorsSam scaled his business through heavy advertising and turning one-on-one sessions into a course, but eventually downsized due to the challenges of managing a large number of students.

Sam, an entrepreneur and CEO of Skool, which is a community platform for creators, has had an intriguing career journey. He started with a large information business, Consulting.com, but now prefers a more low-key approach. Sam's background in entrepreneurship and software development led him to start his own business after watching a course on Mixergy. Initially, he sold one-on-one consulting sessions, but soon realized he could reach more people by turning these sessions into a course. This strategy, which involved heavy paid advertising and using himself as the face of the business, allowed him to scale Consulting.com to a significant revenue level. However, he eventually scaled it back due to the high number of students and the resulting headaches. This experience showcases Sam's adaptability and innovative approach to entrepreneurship.

    • Learning from successful figures in marketing and course creationIdentifying a passion and turning it into a profitable business through marketing and course creation requires focus, learning from industry leaders, and a strong brand.

Identifying a problem you're passionate about solving and turning it into a business through marketing and course creation was a game and a puzzle that the speaker enjoyed solving. He learned from successful figures in the underground Internet marketing world, such as Frank Kern, Ramit Sethi, and Clay Collins. His business, which started as selling courses on Dropbox, quickly surpassed the profits of his software company. He sold his shares and went all in, eventually leading to consulting.com. The speaker's logical approach to challenges and his focus on creating a strong brand were key factors in his success. While some of the names he mentioned, like Frank Kern, are not as prominent today, they were influential during his journey.

    • Focusing on the customer for long-term business successAdapt to customer needs, shift focus from ads to organic content and customer service for sustainable growth

Successful businesses need to adapt and focus on providing value to their customers in order to thrive. In the past, some marketers relied heavily on launch models and advertising, but when customers began to view ads as intrusive and of little value, these businesses struggled. The speaker, for example, built a consulting business that reached $30 million in revenue but was heavily dependent on ads and had a large team. However, when he realized that customers didn't value the ads and that his team wasn't contributing to the customer experience, he restructured the company to focus on organic content and customer service. By shifting his focus to the customer, he was able to build a more sustainable business. This lesson can be applied to any business, big or small, as the ability to adapt and provide value to customers is crucial for long-term success. The speaker's new company, Skool, is an example of this approach, as it is self-funded and focuses on hiring the best people to provide value to its customers.

    • From software to courses and back, the speaker's entrepreneurial journeyFocusing on software and disliking marketing led the speaker to start his first company, struggle, create courses, return to software, and build a successful platform. Providing value and authenticity through content marketing and treating projects as businesses are keys to success.

The speaker's entrepreneurial journey has been shaped by his love for software and his dislike for marketing. He started his first company, Snap and Speck, in software but struggled due to limited funds and a lack of passion for his market. He then turned to creating courses to save money and later returned to software, this time building a platform for online creators. The growth of his current business, which he mentioned has massive traffic, comes from a community network effect. The speaker also shared insights from his content marketing experiments, emphasizing the importance of providing value and authenticity to capture people's attention. He now believes that having a podcast and an email newsletter is an effective strategy for building a successful online presence. The speaker's success can be attributed to his focus and dedication to his projects, treating them as businesses rather than side hobbies.

    • Entrepreneur's $10 Million Bet on Company and Simple LivingSuccessful entrepreneur invests $10M in company, prioritizes family, and embraces unconventional lifestyle with minimal possessions and unique parenting, while experiencing company growth and interest from top investors.

The interviewee, a successful entrepreneur, made a significant investment of $10 million into his company and left his personal funds for family. He bet the rest on the company's growth and simple living. He's unconventional in his personal life, preferring minimal possessions and a unique approach to parenting. Despite the financial risk, he's calm due to the company's growth and interest from top investors. The interviewee is also unconventional in his lack of social media and news consumption, choosing to reinvest that time into his own pursuits.

    • A Passionate Product Designer's Obsession with DetailsA successful product designer is deeply invested in every detail of their product, finding joy in perfecting its strategy and design, even in their free time.

The individual discussed is deeply passionate about the details of his product and design, often going to great lengths to ensure perfection. He spends most of his time on product strategy and design, overseeing multiple teams and roadmaps. However, he recognizes that this level of involvement can be exhausting and may not be suitable for everyone. Despite the challenges, he finds joy in tweaking small details in his free time, demonstrating a true obsession with his craft. His unique design sensibilities have set him apart in his industry, showcasing the power of focusing on the smallest details.

    • Balancing Empowerment and Direction in LeadershipSuccessful leaders strike a balance between empowering team members and providing clear direction, acting as a filter and prioritizer to create innovative solutions while maintaining a clean codebase and efficient development process. Approach AI's future potential with a critical and balanced perspective.

Effective leadership involves striking a balance between empowering team members and providing clear direction. While autonomy and giving employees the freedom to come up with ideas can lead to innovation, overly rigid instructions and micromanagement can hinder progress and exhaust resources. A successful leader acts as a filter and prioritizer, gathering ideas from various sources and collaborating with team members to create solutions that meet user needs while maintaining a clean codebase and efficient development process. AI, while hyped, may not yet have fully replaced traditional search engines or other tools for many tasks, and its future potential should be approached with a critical and balanced perspective.

Springfree Trampoline: Keith Alexander & Steve Holmes (2019)

Springfree Trampoline: Keith Alexander & Steve Holmes (2019)
In the late 1980s, a New Zealand engineer named Keith Alexander wanted to buy a trampoline for his kids. After his wife said they were too dangerous, Keith set out to design his own—a safer trampoline, without metal springs. He tinkered with and perfected the design over the course of a decade. But he was daunted by the challenge of bringing his invention to market; and he almost gave up. At that point Steve Holmes, a Canadian businessman, bought the patent to Keith's trampoline, and took a big risk to commercialize it. Since the start of the pandemic, sales of Springfree Trampolines doubled, and since their launch, the company has sold nearly 500,000 trampolines worldwide.
