    About this Episode

    On our first press day, Color of Success welcomed Brandon Soo Hoo & Tan Kheng Hua from the film, Tiger's Apprentice. Based on the popular children’s book series of the same name by Laurence Yep, THE TIGER’S APPRENTICE follows Chinese-American teenager Tom Lee (Brandon Soo Hoo), whose life changes forever when he discovers he is part of a long lineage of magical protectors known as the Guardians. With guidance from a mythical tiger named Hu (Henry Golding), Tom trains to take on Loo (Michelle Yeoh), a force that is as powerful as a Guardian but with evil intentions to use magic to destroy humanity. To have a fighting chance against Loo, Tom must reunite all twelve Zodiac animal warriors and master his own newly discovered powers.

    Brandon Soo Hoo was is an actor, known for Tropic Thunder (2008)G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) and Ender's Game (2013).

    Tan Kheng Hua is a well-known and respected award-winning actress/producer in Singapore and Malaysia. Kheng has been seen in The Philanthropist (NBC), The Patriarch (UFA), and Serangoon Road (HBO Asia Original Series). Her recent role, as "Empress Dowager" in Netflix's Original Series, Marco Polo, has garnered attention of many viewers.

    She also appeared in the film adaptation of Singapore-born Kevin Kwan's best selling novel Crazy Rich Asians (2018), where she plays Kerry Chu, the mother of protagonist Rachel Chu played by Constance Wu. Besides film and television, Kheng is also highly respected in Singapore theatre scene where she's a prolific actress and independent creative producer in Singapore.

    Alan Jenkins is a Professor of Practice at Harvard Law School where he teaches courses on Race and the Law, Communication, and Supreme Court Jurisprudence. Before joining the Law School faculty, he was President and Co-Founder of The Opportunity Agenda, a social justice communication lab.

    Jenkins’s prior positions have included Assistant to the Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice, where he represented the United States government in constitutional and other litigation before the U.S. Supreme Court; Director of Human Rights at the Ford Foundation, where he managed grantmaking in the United States and eleven overseas regions; and Associate Counsel to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where he defended the rights of low-income communities facing exploitation and discrimination. He previously served as a Law Clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun and to U.S. District Court Judge Robert L. Carter.

    Jenkins is a frequent commentator in broadcast, print, and digital media on topics ranging from Supreme Court decision-making to racial equity to the role of popular culture in social change. His past Board service includes New York Public Radio, the Center for Community Change, the Legal Action Center, and Futuro Media Group, as well as the Board of Governors of the New School for Public Engagement. She is a motivational speaker, Multiple Sclerosis activist, and Elementary School activist for getting kids interested in healthcare. Her passion is helping patients and parents with chronic disease, such as MS, navigate their workspace and jobs to be effective communicators of their needs, advocate for living in their authenticity while maintaining their privacy. 

    She is a practicing physician for the last 17 years and she has had the unique experience of being a doctor, a patient, and a caregiver to a child with congenital heart disease in the US healthcare system. This has driven her to share her story via her new book May 2023. The book is called “The Parts We Don’t Talk About!” The book addresses biases during medical training from colleagues, racial inequality while seeking professional growth, pregnancy, and the treatment of doctors living with chronic disease, such as Multiple Sclerosis.

    At 3 years old, Grace was orphaned and abandoned at the local market in South Korea and eventually ended up in the US foster care system to be adopted. 
     
    Her very difficult experience as a transracial adoptee and foster youth in a predominately White community influenced her       internalized racism of herself and feelings of never truly belonging anywhere. Now, she has created a community of belonging for those who share her lived experiences.
