    enJuly 07, 2020

    About this Episode

Ever wondered what comedians and mental health have in common? Is it ever appropriate to make jokes at a funeral? And what does it look like to find humor in dark times? Our guests this week answer these questions and more as we discover the importance of humor and how it affects our mental health.

In this week’s episode, my co-host and President of Positive Recovery Centers, Julie DeNofa, and I speak with comedians, Andy Huggins and Mike Peterson.

Andy Huggins is a graduate of both The Comedy Store in Los Angeles and Houston’s renowned Comedy Workshop. Andy has worked with acts ranging from Ray Charles, Billy Gardell, Jeff Foxworthy to Dick Gregory. He has played comedy clubs, jazz clubs, corporate gigs, AA conventions, and has entertained our troops stationed in Japan. In the mid-1980s he was a member of The Texas Outlaw Comics whose legendary performances are still celebrated today. Andy also appears in the acclaimed documentary ‘American: The Bill Hicks Story’. He has written for Bill Hicks, Jay Leno, and Billy Crystal at The Academy Awards. Andy is one of the most sought-after comedians in Texas and a comedy staple since 1981. Last year he had an outstanding appearance on America’s Got Talent. Andy turned sixty sometime in his early thirties. At long, happy last, age, attitude, and comedy has come together at the same time.

Mike Peterson is a retired Sergeant from the City of West University Police Department in Houston after 20 years of service. Prior to that Mike spent 3 years in the U.S. Army Military Police. Mike has been performing standup comedy for 21 years. Mike has also opened for Grammy award legend Glen Campbell and has had the honor of traveling overseas to Iraq and Kuwait twice to perform for our U.S. military troops. Breaking Free from the Shame Cycle with George Joseph

Breaking Free from the Shame Cycle with George Joseph

Addiction. Sobriety. Relapse. Shame… repeat. Sound familiar? If you’re caught in the throes of addiction, odds are you’ve been here before. For many of us, the shame cycle keeps us locked in our addiction. The problem with shame is that it warps our understanding of guilt and takes it a step further by making us feel like we’re a bad person rather than simply making a bad decision. But we want to remind you that there is a way out. There is a path toward healing.

In this conversation, Dr. Powers is once again joined by George Joseph, CEO of Positive Recovery Centers, as they discuss the importance of continued treatment on the recovery journey, why relapse doesn’t mean you’re broken, and the personal growth it takes in asking for help.

The biggest takeaway from this powerful conversation? That you’re not alone in this journey and that there are people willing to lend a helping hand because they’ve been there. You’re not too far gone, and you’re not broken - your disease of addiction just makes you think you are. There is hope, and there is freedom on the other side of sobriety.

If you’re ready to break the shame cycle, then this episode is for you!

    Topics Discussed:

    • Dispelling common myths behind addiction

    • Releasing shame around relapse and asking for help

    • Why community matters for a successful recovery

    • Recognizing addiction as a disease and treating it accordingly

    • Spreading hope and freedom through personal testimony

The Role of Love in Overcoming Addiction with George Joseph

The Role of Love in Overcoming Addiction with George Joseph

Struggling with addiction can often leave us feeling unworthy of love, isolated on a path marred by our past mistakes. However, this perception couldn't be more misguided. The reality is that no matter our past actions or who we were, embarking on a journey toward self-love can be the most transformative experience.

In this official Season 2 launch of Positive Recovery MD, we're thrilled to welcome back George Joseph, CEO of Positive Recovery Centers, alongside our host, Dr. Jason Powers.

As they discuss the critical choice of self-love and compassion over the burdens of shame and guilt, Dr. Powers shares a powerful message that for people with an addiction, it's about the journey of feeling worthy enough for self-love and to be able to accept love.

While self-love may be the hardest challenge we've yet faced and the hardest thing to ask of others, George reminds us that love is a profound healer. Love grants us the strength to forgive ourselves, surpass our self-imposed limitations, and forge meaningful connections with others.

From the warmth of self-love to the challenges of emotional growth, this episode unpacks the role of love in overcoming addiction and cultivating a healthier, happier life.

    Topics Discussed:

    • The internal work required to overcome self-sabotage

    • Why you need self-compassion to overcome guilt and shame

    • How drug and alcohol addiction inhibit the ability for love to grow

    • The risk of vulnerability (and the bravest question you can ask)

Positive Aging: Increase Your Life, Flourish in Relationships with Deborah Healy Hammons

Positive Aging: Increase Your Life, Flourish in Relationships with Deborah Healy Hammons

True or false: Positive feelings towards aging can increase your life by up to 8 years longer. Our guest from Wyoming is practically shouting from the rooftops, "IT'S TRUE!". If you blame things on your age and feel diminished in your daily living, it can literally shorten your life. The secret to embracing getting older? Surrounding yourself with solid relationships, practicing gratitude, and admiring the modern miracles of life.

Deborah Healy Hammons, Consultant, Creative Writer, former PBS TV Producer, and former Minority Whip for the Wyoming House of Representatives, has a knack for seeing beauty all around her, even in mundane tasks. In our conversation, Deborah likened driving in rush-hour traffic to seeing a flock of birds communicating in sync. We may all have our own responsibilities and meetings to attend, we’re all genuinely heading in the same direction, same flow of traffic.

She even shares her love for having a real, live person helping her check out at the grocery store over scanning at the self-checkout line because it allows her to bond with the person standing before her. When people generally try to avoid such arduous tasks, Deborah fully embraces them.

When it comes to living happier, more fulfilling lives, Deborah shares that appreciating the world's beauty allows us to cultivate a positive mindset and embrace the joy of living in the moment. And while we can't stop the world from turning and stop ourselves from getting older, we can simply age gracefully.

    Topics Discussed:

    • How to implement positive aging

    • The relationship between our feelings and how they contribute to  longevity

    • Creating a healthy environment to thrive

    • The importance of social networks and connecting with others

    • Why we want to feel valued (and how to value others)

    • How driving in traffic is like a flock of birds in communication.

    • Learning to admire modern miracles of life

Nurturing Relationships and Letting Yourself be Loved with Julie DeNofa

Nurturing Relationships and Letting Yourself be Loved with Julie DeNofa

Honoring people with love and respect has always been one of Julie DeNofa’s greatest strengths. Serving as the President and original partner in the creation of Positive Recovery Centers and the Co-Host of Positive Recovery MD, it’s evident that Julie has always been passionate about seeing others thrive in recovery. With over 25 years of experience helping families recover from substance use disorder, it’s no secret that Julie truly has a heart for people.

In this conversation, Dr. Powers chats with Julie about her career path, from psychiatric nursing to nurturing families, and what it means to find deeper meaning and connection with others.

When asked, “Who are you at your best?”, Julie shares a heartfelt moment between her and a loved one battling fear and uncertainty after facing a sudden loss. By simply honoring them at that moment and unconventionally showcasing love, Julie was able to help her loved one find peace and healing. It’s no secret that Julie has an entirely selfless and giving heart, even if it means putting her own struggles aside. She truly exemplifies what it means to nurture others.

Sober Eve: Ringing in the New Year, Hangover-Free with Bree Brown and Sarah Bolton

Sober Eve: Ringing in the New Year, Hangover-Free with Bree Brown and Sarah Bolton

A common misconception about recovery and living life sober is that you can’t have any fun without substance use, especially during the Holiday season. But that certainly couldn’t be further from the truth! We’d argue that the holidays are even more fun sober. You can wake up feeling guilt-free, cherish the memories from the night before, and there’s no dreaded hangover.

Looking to ring in the New Year and begin 2023 on the right foot? Then you’re in for a real treat as our guests, Sarah Bolton and Bree Brown, Co-Founders of Sober Eve, Houston’s ONLY Soper Pop-Up Night Club, share with us how to embrace New Year’s Eve without the temptation of champagne being passed to you at midnight.

Bree Brown, Co-Founder of Sober Eve, has worked in the behavioral health industry since 2015. Her passion for the work has only multiplied over the years. Beginning in mental health primary treatment, she has now focused on Co-occurring treatment and helping connect communities to much-needed resources.

You may remember Sarah Bolton on Episode 25, where she talked about How to Master the Gift of Giving. Sarah sits on the Board of Directors for the Houston Chapter of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals and is also the chair of the Spectrum Conference. Sarah has worked in business development for both local and national treatment centers and has also facilitated Mindful Art Programs for residential treatment centers. Now, she’s back to share the incredible work she and Bree are doing with Sober Eve. Be sure to reserve your spot on New Year’s Eve. We can’t wait to see you there!

How to Live Without Guilt and Shame with Arlina Allen (ENCORE)

Emotions are a central part of how we operate day-to-day. It’s in our human nature to feel emotional and be sensitive to different aspects of life. We all have strong feelings, and sometimes, we don't know what to do with them. Our guest today shares how to manage these strong emotions and feelings in a healthy way.

This week, we are talking with Arlina Allen, Life & Recovery Coach, Founder of Sober Life School, and Host of the award-winning Recovery podcast, “The ODAAT Chat Podcast.” Arlina has been sober since 4/23/94, married for 25 years, and is a mother of two amazing boys.

Her class "Reinvent-How To Rebuild Self-Esteem & End Self-Sabotage" is being taught to those who've suffered from low self-esteem, codependency, workaholism, and many other issues. It is also being taught in the CA and AZ Prison Systems to help provide healthy coping skills to inmates before they are released.

In this episode, Arlina shares her personal recovery journey and how she was able to find freedom in expressing her emotions in a healthy way. We discuss why living in guilt and shame is detrimental to the recovery journey and how to shift our mindset around our past experiences. Arlina also shares the importance of gratitude and how it allows us to be present with our emotions.

    Topics Discussed

    • The various feelings and emotions those in recovery face
    • How to manage “big feelings” in a healthy way
