Unlocking Peace, Joy and Harmony in Motherhood with Dr. LaToya Wiggins

    enMay 17, 2023

    About this Episode

As I reflect on the precious time spent with my own mother and witness the incredible strength and resilience of friends and family members who are mothers, my admiration and respect for them has grown immensely over the years. And, it is increasingly evident that moms in my network spent more time focused on the well-being of everyone else besides themselves. Their children, spouses or partners, parents, and the list goes on & on.

What I now realize is that behind the veil of motherhood, there are often untold stories of the immense challenges and sacrifices that moms face, from the profound emotional rollercoaster to the struggles with guilt, self-doubt, and the pressure to be perfect, all of which remain unspoken to the outside world. One of the subjects really discussed (at least in my circle) is postpartum depression.

But let's be real, postpartum depression is crucial to discuss because it sheds light on a common but often overlooked mental health issue that affects many new mothers. In fact, conversations such as these are essential because they validate the experiences of countless mothers who may be silently suffering and experiencing shame or guilt for experiencing depression during what is commonly perceived as a joyous time in their lives.

In this episode, Dr. LaToya Wiggins and I discuss the importance of normalizing mental health therapy and self-care for women (generally) and mothers (specifically). Dr. Wiggins shares her personal journey with mental health and how nourishing herself physically, mentally, and spiritually helped her overcome it. We also talk about the need for finding a safe space and tribe of people who uplift and empower each other. Tune in for an insightful conversation on mental health and self-care for black women.

I invite you to join our conversation as we discuss:
    • Gratitude for mothers
    • Prioritizing Self-Care
    • Embracing the messiness
    • Honest and authentic
    • Seeking harmony
    • A nourished mind, body, and soul
    • Start small for big results
    • Normalizing therapy and self-care
    • Finding your tribe
    • Thriving
    Honorable Mention:
    Faith and Family
    She Is a Nourished Mom

Unlocking the Places Where It Is Safe to be Ourselves

People would be amazed at how often, early in my life, I felt invisible. Sure, I was sitting in the front row in class and raising my hand to answer questions and was a really good student. I was sitting in the 2nd chair in the clarinet section in the band. I was the best player on the basketball team. And yet, deep down I was aware that my friends and classmates truly didn’t see me.

I don’t recall any specific conversations where my parents told me how I had to show up, but I intrinsically knew that I didn’t want to do anything that would draw too much attention. I wanted to fit in. I did not want to be “othered”.

I got so good at it that I didn’t truly realize how adept I had become at compartmentalizing my life. Code-switching. Moving and speaking in a certain way “in public” and exhaling when I was with family and friends who “got me”.

But over the last several years, I have intentionally focused on finding the spaces in which I could be myself. There’s an ease to it. There is comfort. There is understanding. There is…joy.

In this special episode of Unlocking the Club, I revisit conversations we’ve had on the show with previous guests where they have shared those spaces and places they go to to connect with themselves. To be at ease. They reveal the people they surround themselves with in an effort to show up fully. We talk about how to find and how to create the psychological safety that will allow us to be our full selves. We unlock the spaces, sanctuaries and clubs when you can be unapologetically you!

I invite you to join the conversation as I discuss:

    • Importance of psychological safety

    • Creating safe spaces is essential

    • The Four Stages of Psychological Safety by Timothy Clark

    • Prioritize safe spaces

    • Finding community

    • Showing up with authenticity

    • Finding our sanctuaries

    • Prioritize self-care for psychological safety.

Unlocking The Beauty and Power of Black Hair with Cherie Gatson

Unlocking The Beauty and Power of Black Hair with Cherie Gatson
For as long as I can remember, I have had a really interesting relationship with my hair. Long weekend days spent getting my hair washed and pressed. Scalp greased. Ears burnt with the hot comb. My mom being thankful that I wasn't "tender headed". Me being upset that I was missing out on playing with my brothers & friends outside. My cousin cutting off a bunch of my hair and giving me a jheri curl during a family trip to Texas. My mom learning how to perm my hair as a result since there wasn't a black beauty salon in Idaho at the time. Being jealous of friends whose hair didn't "turn back" as quickly after working out when I had a relaxer. My edges thinning out after several years of wearing micro-braids. Ah, the ebbs and flows of my hair journey are monumental...not unlike other Black women.

And then, hearing India Irie's song "I Am Not My Hair" lyrics for the first time and feeling seen. Truly seen.

🎵🎵 It's time for us to redefine who we be
You can shave it off like a South African beauty
Or get in on lock like Bob Marley
You can rock it straight like Oprah Winfrey
If it's not what's on your head, it's what's underneath, and say 🎵🎵

Can we or can't we wear our natural hair? That topic comes up in conversation so often. Many of us felt like we didn't have a choice early on in our career. Corporate America just wouldn't accept us wearing our natural hair. We wouldn't fit in. Would we be considered as "worthy" of opportunities and promotions? The challenges are even more frustrating for those who don't live in communities with access to salons familiar with our hair texture and how to care for it.

In this episode, I have the pleasure of being in conversation with Cherie Gatson the Founder of HAPI Hair Studio in Eugene, Oregon. HAPI is an acronym for Hair Artists in Pursuit of Inclusion and their mission is making many of us very happy (and proud) to have beautiful black hair. Cherie talks about a traumatizing event that most likely served as the inspiration for the work she is doing to inspire, educate and empower her community.

I invite you to join our conversation as we discuss:

    • Wearing natural hair
    • Natural hair care advocacy
    • Embracing curls in hair education
    • Feeling excluded due to race
    • Kinky hair's negative association
    • Hair care education in schools
    • Can I touch your hair?
    • Black hair education and advocacy
    • Haircare accessibility in predominantly white markets
    • Switching Careers and Priorities
    • Validation in the Black community
    • Hair porosity and moisture
    • Hair texture misconceptions
    • Creating a safe space
    • Creating change in the community
    • Breaking barriers in education
    • Prioritizing self-care
    • Competing against ourselves
    • Celebrating Black Hair

    Honorable Mention:
    Hair Texture Charts
    University of Oregon Hair Project
Dimensions of being a small business owner

Unlocking Our Joyful Purpose with Iantha Richardson

Unlocking Our Joyful Purpose with Iantha Richardson
So often we find ourselves having to code switch or compartmentalize our lives for various reasons. For me, because I navigate so many spaces daily (entrepreneur, executive coach, sister, mentor, Black woman in Idaho, woman in Corporate America, etc.), I have become really effective at code switching. But, it is exhausting having to do so. I recently read the novel Trust (written by Hernan Diaz) and one of the characters in the book states that "in order to maintain your privacy, you must have a public façade" and that really resonated with me.

That statement prompted questions such as, "Am I showing up authentically?" and "Do I know who I am and am I showing up that way consistently? What impact does that have on my well-being?" So there was no one better to discuss the toll and the benefit of playing various roles than someone who does it for a living.

In this episode, my guest, Actress Iantha Richardson, and I discuss her experience as an actress in the industry (including roles on Will Trent, American Soul, and Good Trouble), how she found her purpose, the mission that acting and dance allow her to fulfill, how she honored her mother and found joy by fulfilling a commitment, and how art emulates life.

I invite you to join our conversation as we discuss:
    • Privacy versus Public Façade
    • Art saves lives
    • Being a diligent caretaker of self
    • Will Trent
    • Directorial debut with film J'Ouvert

Unlocking Our Ancestral Destiny with Dr. Artika Tyner

Unlocking Our Ancestral Destiny with Dr. Artika Tyner
I have become increasingly aware of the fact that our future is deeply influenced by the lived experiences of our ancestors. Every triumph, every struggle, every obstacle they overcame has shaped who we are today. Their courage, resilience, and determination have been passed down through generations, and it is up to us to continue their legacy. By honoring our ancestors and learning from their experiences, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come.

In this episode, my guest Dr. Artika Tyner (a passionate educator and author) Founder of the Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute discusses how her connection to her foremothers serves as a reminder of the power of reclaiming our roots and our purpose. She outlines how our roots are our foundation and can provide us with the courage to pursue our dreams and goals. Ways in which we should be inspired by our ancestors, who fought for us to be where we are today. And, how we can use their stories and experiences to inform our own journey.

Unlocking Being "The Only" with Nikole Collins Puri

Unlocking Being "The Only" with Nikole Collins Puri

Black people are lazy. Black people don't have anything to bring to the table. Black people don't have great ideas. These clichés are what keep systematic racism in power. If we are unable to show our greatness because no one is listening, how do we prove these stereotypes wrong? This type of thinking does not just happen in the workforce. It begins at a very young age in our education system. Per Education Weekly, "a typical U.S. student spends 8,884 hours over nine years to complete primary and lower secondary education." With that amount of time, teachers have the ability to either breath life into a child or deflate them like a balloon. If a child is the "only one" in the classroom that looks different than the others, what's the likelihood they are going to receive positive affirmations or any affirmations at all?

In this episode, I am speaking with Nikole Collins Puri. Nikole is a social justice visionary, strategist, advocate and mentor who has committed her life to unleashing the potential of untapped communities. She’s the CEO of Techbridge Girls, a nonprofit organization that excites, educates and equips girls from low-income communities through STEM, empowering them to pursue STEM careers and achieve economic mobility and financial security as adults.

Unlocking Ease in Creative Productivity with Melissa Haughton

Unlocking Ease in Creative Productivity with Melissa Haughton

We are coming right off of the tail end of Thanksgiving. When you saw all those fixings, how did you make your plate? Did you pile everything on? Did you get those plates that have separate compartments? Did you eat all the proteins at one time and then go back for some veggies and then some carbs. How you ate your Thanksgiving meal is probably how you are going to approach what to do when a plethora of inspiration, ideas and creativity hits you. Are you going to mix it all together and nosh or are you going to be more strategic and have a plan of action?

In this episode, there is nobody better to dive into this discussion than Melissa Haughton! Melissa (she/her) is a writer, marketer and digital storyteller of Jamaican descent based in Toronto. Her work often explores ideas of family, culture and community through the lens of Blackness. In 2020, Melissa created and produced So What Are You? a six-part podcast series exploring diasporic and familial relationships to cultural identity. In 2021, she co-produced Bad Internet, a two-part audio documentary on Internet (dis)connectivity in Canada. She is currently the Marketing Manager at edit audio, where she oversees strategy for partnerships and promotion of branded client podcasts and in-house original series, including the Ambie-nominated series Date With Daddy, and Ozarks True Crime, which has surpassed 1.5 million downloads worldwide.

Unlocking Your Soul's Purpose with Nicole Ellis

Unlocking Your Soul's Purpose with Nicole Ellis

We are officially in the throws of the holiday season. Although it is customary to give tangible gifts, some of the greatest gifts do not have a price tag. The gift of time. The gift of understanding. The gift of reaching out to someone and mirroring to them how they shine. I received the latter from my dear friend, Cherie Buckner-Webb, recently in a phone call. In this episode, Nicole Ellis shares the gift of experiences and health.

Nicole is a vegan food travel vlogger and consultant! As a travel vlogger, one of her goals is to cross all 50 states off of her "been to" list. With only one state to go (Alaska), she will be accomplishing that goal soon enough. However, Nicole had an even loftier goal. To give herself the gift of health. She has done that and in return, has gifted others by teaching them how to be healthier as well without sacrificing flavor.

I invite you to join our conversation as we discuss:

    Unlocking Parenthood with Edward Kim

    Unlocking Parenthood with Edward Kim

In Episode #24, I got to honor my mother in a conversation with Marisa Renee Lee about grief in loss. It's only fitting with National Play with Dad Day here that I share some thoughts about my amazing father with you as well. I don't speak about my father often on this podcast but he has definitely shaped me into the woman I am today.

Recently, I was asked "What is the value of a father"? THAT is a powerful question. Children's relationships with their fathers are just as important as relationships with their mother.

In this episode, I am speaking with Edward Kim. Edward has a passion to make the experience of work enjoyable! He is a leadership coach, team builder, business owner but his favorite moniker is "dad" to his son, Ernie. But his transition into fatherhood has not been an easy one. As anyone who has been around newborns knows, some days can be amazing. Then, there are those other days that no one speaks about. Well, Edward is speaking about both types of days!

I invite you to join our conversation as we discuss:

    • Soft Skills

    • Being in wellness

    • First time parents

    • Game of Thrones
