    Podcast Summary

    • Ukrainian Culture Festival in Maryland: Celebrating Unity Amidst ConflictA Ukrainian culture festival in Maryland has grown in popularity due to the ongoing conflict, attracting diverse crowds and raising funds for humanitarian relief.

During a special episode of Ukraine, the Latest, David Knowles visited the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Silver Spring, Maryland for their annual festival celebrating Ukrainian culture. The festival, which started as a small event 20 years ago, has grown significantly due to the 2022 full-scale invasion, attracting not only Ukrainians but also Americans and people from various cultures. The profits from the festival go towards humanitarian relief in Ukraine. Peter, a member of the congregation, shared his family's connection to Ukraine as refugees who came to America after spending years in refugee camps. The festival showcases Ukrainian music, food, and traditions, promoting unity and support amidst the ongoing conflict. The event highlights the resilience and strength of the Ukrainian community and their dedication to preserving their culture.

    • Ukrainian community's connection to their heritage and homelandThe Ukrainian community in the US values their heritage and actively supports their homeland, with strong connections to their Ukrainian roots and a growing presence through events like the Washington Ukraine Festival. During times of crisis, they provide aid and serve as a spiritual refuge.

The Ukrainian community in the United States is deeply connected to their heritage and strongly supportive of their homeland. They take pride in the historical significance of their churches, such as the one in this discussion, which is the first church in the world dedicated to the Chernobyl victims. The community has a strong connection to their Ukrainian roots, with many individuals holding deep respect and admiration from their relatives back in Ukraine. The Washington Ukraine Festival is a testament to their active and growing community, which attracts thousands of people every year. During times of hardship, such as the full-scale invasion, the parish has been actively involved, working to support their cause and provide aid to those in need. The church itself serves as a spiritual refuge, a place where individuals can come to find solace and connect with their community and faith.

    • Humanity's response to war: love, kindness, and supportDuring war, communities come together to provide aid and support, forming strong bonds, and drawing guidance from values of love, compassion, and unity.

Despite the horrors and devastation brought about by war, the best of humanity often emerges. During times of crisis, people come together to show love, kindness, and support for one another. This was evident during the war in Ukraine, where communities rallied to provide humanitarian aid and support for refugees. The speaker's church, for example, established a humanitarian center and sent millions of dollars worth of aid. Neighboring churches and communities also came together to support each other, forming strong bonds that didn't exist before the war. As a priest, the speaker draws guidance from the Bible during difficult times, reminding himself and others of the importance of love, compassion, and unity in the face of adversity.

    • Promoting peace, unity, and cultural appreciationFocusing on positivity, sharing culture, and fostering understanding bridge gaps and contribute to a better future

Focusing on the good and the positive is essential, especially during challenging times. As the discussion revealed, it's not within our power to speculate about individuals or world events. Instead, we should concentrate on promoting peace, unity, and cultural appreciation. For instance, the Ukrainian community in Washington, D.C., has been sharing their culture, church, food, and music for 20 years to bridge the gap between Ukrainians and Americans. Although not everyone in the US may fully understand the situation in Ukraine, the solidarity and support shown are crucial. As Yuri, a Ukrainian priest, emphasized, feeling at home and having equal relationships are vital components of any community. Ultimately, it's essential to remember that every act of kindness and understanding contributes to a better future for everyone involved.

    • Surprising normalcy amidst geopolitical tensionsPeople find comfort and connection in everyday life and community, even during times of conflict

Despite the ongoing geopolitical tensions and conflicts, people's everyday lives continue, filled with routines and connections. Darina's experiences of talking to her relatives in Ukraine reveal a surprising normalcy amidst the backdrop of missile alarms and sirens. This contrasts with the usual quick endings to conversations about sending children to protect foreign countries due to political agreements. Darina's personal journey from Ukraine to the US, starting in New Orleans and then moving to Washington DC, showcases her adaptation to American culture and the sense of belonging she found in her church and the Ukrainian festival she's been a part of for two years. This festival, which brings Ukrainian artists to perform, has become a source of comfort and connection for the Ukrainian community, especially during times of conflict. Overall, Darina's story highlights the resilience and adaptability of individuals and communities in the face of challenges.

    • Feeling disconnected from Ukraine during conflictDespite strong connections, the speaker feels disconnected from Ukraine during conflict and continues to provide support while adapting to differences between her current and past life.

Despite having strong connections to Ukraine and making friends there, feeling like a visitor and the unexpected turn of events during the revolution left the speaker with a sense of disconnection and concern for loved ones still living there. Eighteen months into the full-scale invasion, she continues to feel the impact, staying informed and providing support while adapting to the differences between her current life in the US and her Ukrainian roots. The speaker's experiences highlight the realities of war and the ongoing need for support and awareness.

    • Celebrating Ukrainian Heritage and Supporting the Conflict-AffectedIndividuals deeply rooted in their Ukrainian heritage find joy in cultural events and feel compelled to help those affected by conflict in their homeland.

For this individual, their Ukrainian heritage is deeply rooted in their identity, and they feel a strong connection to their culture despite not having many opportunities to experience it firsthand. They have found ways to connect with their heritage through events like the one they are attending, and they also feel compelled to help those affected by the conflict in Ukraine. The drone war in Ukraine is a personal matter for them, and they have provided support by sending drones to friends on the front line and sharing information and videos with them. The individual's favorite aspect of their heritage is the food, as their grandparents had the first Ukrainian restaurant in Delaware. They have brought a sign from the restaurant to the event as a reminder of their roots. Overall, the individual's experiences demonstrate the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural heritage, as well as the desire to help and support those in need.

    • Appreciation for parents' bravery amidst conflictKenya shares her concerns for her parents' safety, her experiences of displacement, and her hope and pride in the face of adversity. She highlights the importance of unity, solidarity, and speaking out against Russian aggression.

The speaker, Kenya, expresses her deep appreciation for her parents' bravery and resilience in the face of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. She shares her concerns for their safety and her own experiences of displacement and hardship. Despite these challenges, she remains hopeful and proud, and finds solace in the kindness and support of others. Kenya's story underscores the strength and determination of the Ukrainian people, and the importance of unity and solidarity in times of crisis. She also emphasizes the importance of continuing to speak out and take action against Russian aggression. Overall, her message is one of resilience, hope, and the power of community in the face of adversity.

    • Ukrainian people's bravery and longing for peaceThe Ukrainian people's resilience and determination to return home despite the challenges of war is admired. Their eventual victory and peace are believed in.

The people of Ukraine, despite the challenges and hardships they face during the war, remain brave and resilient, with a deep longing to return to their homeland and be reunited with their loved ones. The speaker expresses admiration for their determination and wishes to convey her support for them and the Ukrainian army. Her own daughter, who has moved to the US, misses her life in Ukraine dearly and longs to visit her friends and family there. The speaker encourages her to make new friends and take advantage of the opportunities available to her in her new home, while acknowledging the difficulty of adjusting to a new environment. The people of Ukraine are celebrated for their bravery and strength, and the speaker expresses her belief in their eventual victory and the return of peace to their land. The episode concludes with a reminder of Shopify's ability to help businesses grow at every stage, and a promotion for 1800flowers.com as a destination for gift-giving and spreading joy.

725: Leaving Pro Sports and a Violent Past to Forge Financial Freedom from SCRATCH w/Suni Rao
To invest in real estate, you need to have a strong why. Without it, you won’t get far, and the first fumble that comes your way may be your last. That’s why having a solid reason behind your real estate investing can keep you going while the rest give up. And this is precisely what Suni Rao’s success is built on as a former pro tennis player turned financial analyst and now ten-unit real estate investor. You may think you know her story already since she was a former pro, but you’d probably be wrong. Suni was raised in a household of domestic violence. As a child, she knew that if she only had enough money, she could escape and finally be free of the abuse. So when the opportunity came for her to play pro tennis at a young age, she took the chance without ever looking back. This dream continued until her early twenties, when she was physically forced to give up her goal of winning the world’s biggest tournaments. She took a hard pivot, eventually leading her to climb the corporate ladder, only to have some crushing feedback knock her off. However, none of this stopped Suni from building the life she wanted in the background. After one property came another, and another, and another. Now, with ten units to her name, she’s making massive strides toward financial freedom and is here to tell you exactly how you can do the same.  In This Episode We Cover Financial insecurity and how to regain your freedom through real estate investing  House hacking and using it as a stepping stone to invest in bigger, better properties  Leaving the corporate ladder behind to build your own wealth without an employer  Sports lessons of resilience that any real estate investor can relate to  How to stop limiting beliefs and doubts from derailing your dreams  Why property class matters and how buying in better neighborhoods will make you more  How to “force appreciation” and gain massive equity on your properties  And So Much More! On a day early this fall, Nikita Stewart, who covers social services for The New York Times, and the Daily producers Annie Brown and Stella Tan spent a day at Council of Peoples Organization, a food pantry in Brooklyn, speaking to its workers and clients.

As with many other pantries in the city, it has seen its demand rocket during the pandemic as many New Yorkers face food shortages. And with the year drawing to a close, many of New York City’s pantries — often run with private money — face a funding crisis.

Today, the story of one day in the operations of a New York food pantry.

Guest: Nikita Stewart, who covers social services for The New York Times; Annie Brown, a senior audio producer for The Times; and Stella Tan, an associate audio producer for The Times.

We want to hear from you. Fill out our survey about The Daily and other shows at: nytimes.com/thedailysurvey

    Background reading:

    • Here are five key statistics that show how hunger is worsening in New York City.
    • An estimated 1.5 million New Yorkers can’t afford food, and tens of thousands have shown up at the city’s food pantries since the pandemic began. But there is relief and hope when they are at home cooking.

For every Tenfed item that is sold, TEN meals are provided to people suffering from food insecurity around the globe.   Tenfed is more than just a brand - it’s about having meaning and purpose behind what you choose to wear. It’s about having style while changing the world at the same time. When you wear Tenfed, not only will you look great and feel comfortable, but you’re also making a statement that you’re part of the solution. It's a purchase that feels good.   So far to date, the company has been able to help provide over 370,000 meals to people in need around the world, including in Canada where they reside.
