    • Playful Rivalry: Lancashire vs RP AccentsIn a light-hearted social media poll, people preferred the Lancashire accent over RP. Both individuals joked about retaliating towards those who didn't vote for them and revealed their self-consciousness about their accents, ultimately expressing a preference for an Australian accent.

During a playful social media poll, a majority of voters preferred the Lancashire accent over the Received Pronunciation (RP) accent in a conversation between two individuals. The person with the RP accent, feeling slighted, threatened, and playfully vengeful, promised retaliation towards those who didn't vote for her, while also offering a discount for those who did. The Lancashire accent supporter, on the other hand, jokingly threatened those who didn't vote for her with toads in their beds and pepper in their tea. The conversation also revealed that both individuals were self-conscious about their accents and, if given a choice, would prefer an Australian accent, specifically the Dame Edna type, over their own. The conversation showcased the playful banter and friendly rivalry between the two individuals, as well as the unique quirks and nuances of their accents.

    • Backgrounds shape experiences in unexpected waysUnderstanding diverse backgrounds and experiences is crucial to avoid misunderstandings, even from seemingly insignificant incidents.

Background and connections can play a significant role in shaping experiences, even in seemingly insignificant ways. This was highlighted in a conversation about a childhood television appearance, where the speaker mentioned an audience member's experience contrasting with their own, and the misconception that all television audiences were posh. The speaker also shared an instance of mispronouncing a word on air and the subsequent correction, showcasing how small errors can lead to larger misunderstandings. Overall, the conversation emphasized the importance of understanding diverse backgrounds and experiences, and the potential impact of seemingly minor incidents.

    • Origins of English phrases and childhood heroesThe conversation explored the diverse origins of English phrases and the shared childhood heroes of the speakers, showcasing the richness and unity of language and personal experiences.

Language evolves from various sources, including French, German, Scandinavian, and Norse, as discussed during the conversation. The term "zhush it up" was believed to have French origins, but it actually comes from English. The phrase "is there a sitter this evening?" is a polite way to ask for a seating arrangement when visiting someone's house. During the conversation, the topic shifted to childhood heroes, and it was revealed that the speaker had grown up admiring Robbie Blake, a famous Burnley soccer player. The speaker also mentioned Peter K as another childhood favorite. An unexpected commonality was discovered when it was mentioned that the Queen is known for ruffling people's hair. The conversation also included a shared joke about John Inman, which was found hilarious by both parties involved. Overall, the conversation showcased the richness and diversity of language, as well as the shared experiences and interests that bring people together.

1 in 4 community college students studies at a California college. Meet the man in charge of them

California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley knows firsthand the importance of receiving both an affordable, quality education and the proper guidance during those years. After serving in the Army following high school and then transferring from Golden West College to UC Irvine, Oakley ultimately became the first Latino to serve as Chancellor for the largest system of higher education in the country while also sitting on the board of Regents for the University of California. He opens up to host Giselle Fernandez about the initiatives he's implemented in order to ensure students receive the best education possible — one of which aims to eliminate inequities and achievement gaps so that college is more accessible, diverse and affordable. Oakley also discusses the challenges community college students have faced in the past year with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has actually helped shine a light on problems communities have faced all along — such as limited broadband access.
