Rockin' Out with The Pride of Piqua

When Alex Smith swapped his baseball mitt for a pickleball paddle, little did we know that the very same competitive fire that drove him on the diamond would ignite our local courts. With tales as rich as his craftsmanship, Alex’s journey from the dream of professional baseball to the business and sport arenas of Texas is nothing short of inspiring. Our latest conversation weaves through his life story, highlighting an impressive leap from college athletics to the front office of the Texas Rangers, and how those experiences have shaped his approach to pickleball and business with the same strategic finesse as a perfectly executed backhand.

We wrap up our session with heartfelt anecdotes and a nod to the entrepreneurial spirit that thrives within our ranks. From real estate ventures to the handcrafted rocking chairs that have become a staple at the Texas Rangers' stadium, it's clear that our passions extend far beyond the pickleball court. Alex's thoughtful gestures, like the handwritten note that lifted my spirits, underscore the camaraderie that's become the hallmark of our group. Join us as we celebrate the triumphs, tackle the challenges, and support each other's dreams—both in business and in the game we love.

Fashion Faux Pas, Friendship, and the Pickleball Phenomenon with Larysa Santiago

Fashion Faux Pas, Friendship, and the Pickleball Phenomenon with Larysa Santiago
Ever shown up to a party wearing the same outfit as someone else? That's exactly what happened to Larysa Santiago and her pickleball partner; it's all about sport, style, and solidarity. This week, we're joined by Larysa, a charter member and "Erne Coordinator" of the Southlake Paddle Club, who brings to the table not just her tales of sartorial synergy but also her transformative journey with pickleball during a tumultuous period. We unwrap the layers of team spirit and the profound personal impacts that pickleball has on players, all while reveling in the delightful mishaps and coincidences that make the sport so endearing.

What's the secret ingredient to a thriving sports partnership? If you ask us after this week's chat with Larysa, it's a combination of matching outfits, shared goals, and a dash of serendipity. We reflect on the lighter side of competition, including a "blind date" with a new partner that led to unexpected success. Our conversation spins from personal victories on the court to the psychological battles players face, and we marvel at how pickleball creates a vibrant community of friends, families, and (in this case) former rugby players turned pickleball enthusiasts.

Strap in for a volley of laughter, strategy, and heart as we share stories from our growing pickleball community. This episode serves up memorable wins, the thrills of nail-biting defense and offense plays, and the sheer joy that echoes beyond the bounds of the court. Whether you're swinging a paddle for the first time or you're the king or queen of your local pickleball court, Larysa's infectious passion for the game is a reminder of the beauty and camaraderie found in this rapidly expanding sport. Join us for an episode that's as much about friendship and finding joy in life as it is about the game of pickleball itself.

Larysa Santiago is a local (Southlake, TX) pickleball influencer, #BlazingPaddles founding member, Southlake Paddle Club Charter Member, Erne Coordinator, former gymnast and rugby player. Larysa is one of many who can honestly say “Pickleball saved my life.” Saddle up and have a listen, you’ll be glad you did!

Pickleball, Coming to a College Near You

Pickleball, Coming to a College Near You

Welcome back pickleheads. Today we speak with Noah Suemnick, founder of the National Collegiate Pickleball Association (NCPA). Get ready to be inspired as he shares his ambitious journey of bringing the sport to college campuses around the country. Fresh from the NCPA's maiden tournament in San Diego, and the challenges faced in establishing a pickleball association during a time when everyone is looking for a piece of the pickleball pie.

Listen in  as we navigate through Noah's bold vision of uniting college and community through the ever-expanding sport of pickleball. If you're a fan of controversy, you won't want to miss his experiences dealing with the NCAA over the organization's name - a  tale of adversity turned advantage.

At only 22 years old, Noah has a vision that is just now launching into reality. Only five years ago the average age of pickleball players was 50+, but that dynamic is quickly flipping with more and more players learning and playing the game at a young age. It won't be long before pickleball scholarships are a reality, high school letter jackets will feature a whiffle ball, and people like Noah will be the ones to make it happen.

    HR Hardball Farewell (and HELLO!)

    HR Hardball Farewell (and HELLO!)

After four seasons and 60 episodes, Elvis is leaving the building. HR Hardball has been a passion project from the time my first blog post, "First Pitch," posted on July 15, 2012 - you're currently reading post #367, so that passion burned for quite a while. It would be eight years before transitioning to a podcast format, allowing me to have interesting conversations with interesting people throughout the "people" industry, whether that was an entrepreneur, an author, a consultant, or even my own wife it has been a fun ride.

But frankly, I'm ready for a change.

This season I brought Karen into the mix as co-host and that addition kept me engaged, but it wasn't long before another topic consistently found its way into every interview.

Pickleball. As the sport continued to grow, our interest level grew in tandem. The final straw was our interview with the "Pissed & Pickled" ladies, Lori and Missy. These two crack-ups started a podcast about pickleball, we connected via Instagram, and it wouldn't be long before they were chatting with me and Karen about all things pickleball. We didn't know it at the time, but that episode would be the finale for HR Hardball.

So we have made the decision to pull the plug on HR Hardball and switch to a new topic (guess?). The new podcast, "Blazing Paddles" will focus on the sport, the players, the influencers and those at the front and center of the zeitgeist of the 2020's.

The show will launch this October, and we expect some may choose to opt out but we hope you'll stick around and share the moment with us.

With all the nonsense we have been subjected to over the last three years, the one ray of sunshine for many people was this crazy game played with a paddle and a wiffle-ball. Let's talk!

HR Hardball, the podcast was launched in October, 2020 to explore the connection between Human Behavior and Human Resources. Getting Pissed (and Pickled) with Lori & Missy

Getting Pissed (and Pickled) with Lori & Missy

We officially live in a day & age when "pickleball celebrity" is becoming a real thing. Who woulda thunk it? Three years ago you couldn't draw attention to a pickleball match if you set it on fire, but now???? Now in addition to the professional players and coaches, you have pickleball influencers - which now includes our new friends and current guests, Lori & Missy of the Pissed & Pickled podcast.

They come to this place honestly after their friends suggested they take their brand of snark to a podcast, so these self-described "less than average" pickleball players did just that as "Pissed and Pickled" was born. If. you like pickleball and/or you like to laugh, give these ladies a follow on Instagram, subscribe to their podcast, subscribe to their YouTube channel and get notified when new P&P content drops.

    Being Eminent with Hannah Mitrea

    Being Eminent with Hannah Mitrea

One of the nice things about having interesting people on your podcast is that you find products, concepts and/or key learnings of which you may have been unaware. But sometimes it works in reverse - you stumble upon a great product or service and decide "this is too good not to share." We have had previous episodes with entrepreneurs (Ootbox and Storyy for example!) we discovered as potential consumers prior to connecting for the sake of a good podcast episode.

This episode with Hannah Mitrea of "Be Eminent" fits the second category.

As a content creator I am constantly challenged with providing new and/or interesting content for the listeners, readers, and viewers of our little podcast. This is especially true when you're stretched to capacity managing a career alongside a passion project; whether it's a lack of time or a creative drought, the struggle is real my friends.

So when Hannah reached out to me on LinkedIn and claimed to be able to "turn an hour of content into ONE MONTH of content," you could say I was more than a little intrigued.

I'm here to confirm that the proof is in the output - I waded into a trial run with Hannah's team and sent the videocast of our interview with Tim Wright, our local pickleball Czar. Within a week I received 10 professionally produced and edited "mini-episodes" each focusing on a key talking point from the episode (listen here). I was blown away. Thanks to the Be Eminent team I had a reservoir of captivating and original content that could be released over the course of 2-3 weeks, all I had to do was plug and play into my social media calendar.

And that's just part of what Hannah's team can do - get your ears on and have a listen as we talk about passion projects, start-up businesses, targeted marketing and giving back to the community. This episode rocks, y'all.
