    Podcast Summary

    • 2024 US Presidential Race: Faith and Religion's Role in PoliticsDuring the 2024 US presidential race, faith and religion significantly impact politics, especially in states with large evangelical populations. Candidates, like Trump, leverage their religious beliefs to win support, and delivering on promises, like appointing conservative justices, strengthens their base.

During the 2024 presidential race in the US, faith and religion continue to play a significant role in politics, particularly in states with large evangelical populations like Iowa. Candidates, such as Donald Trump, recognize the importance of appealing to this base and often discuss their religious beliefs to win their support. Trump's strong poll numbers and delivery on promises, like appointing conservative justices to the Supreme Court, have helped him maintain a loyal following among evangelicals despite personal controversies. However, the potential backlash from the overturning of Roe v. Wade remains to be seen. Trump's approach to religion during his campaign is a stark contrast to the UK political landscape, where discussing faith openly is less common.

    • Trump's support among evangelicals despite controversiesDespite unease, Trump maintains support from evangelicals. However, Trump's rhetoric threatens American democracy by questioning election results and inciting violence.

Donald Trump's support among evangelical voters remains strong despite controversies and allegations. Trump's partnership with this group is an incongruous one, as he often appears ill-at-ease at religious events but continues to appeal to them. However, there's a sinister side to Trump's rhetoric, as he has laid the groundwork for more authoritarian behavior if re-elected. He has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election results, castigated his opponents as corrupt, and even incited violence on election day. These actions threaten the very foundations of American democracy, and it's crucial to remain vigilant and guard the vote to ensure a fair and free election.

    • Trump's Intentions to Reshape American InstitutionsTrump has expressed intentions to reshape American institutions if he returns to power, drawing comparisons with authoritarian leaders. He intends to capture key institutions, like the judiciary and state bureaucracy, and politicize them to suit his agenda.

Former President Donald Trump has been openly expressing his intentions to reshape American institutions and governance if he returns to power, drawing comparisons with authoritarian leaders in Hungary and Poland. He has criticized the current state of the country, accusing the Democrats of creating a health crisis, and has promised retribution against his political opponents. Trump has also indicated that he intends to capture key institutions, such as the judiciary and state bureaucracy, and politicize them to suit his agenda. His previous actions, including the January 6th Capitol riots, provide evidence of his disregard for established institutions and his willingness to undermine democratic norms. It is important to take his threats seriously and prepare for potential consequences.

    • Trump's Potential Control Over US Government Branches in 2024 ElectionFormer President Trump's potential appointees could give him significant influence over US government branches if he runs for office again in 2024, causing international concerns and divisions among voters.

Former President Donald Trump, if he chooses to run for office again in 2024, will have significant control over the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the U.S. government due to his appointees. This situation has raised concerns among people in the western world about the implications for international relations, particularly regarding Ukraine and NATO. Despite this, European ambassadors are reportedly trying to curry favor with the Trump campaign in anticipation of a potential Trump presidency. The interview last week with Sean Spicer highlighted the ongoing debate about the role of journalists in holding politicians accountable and the divisions within the American electorate. A significant number of voters who supported Trump in 2016 but did not in 2020 may still have reservations about him in 2024. The ongoing legal proceedings related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot could provide insight into the potential consequences of Trump's actions. Ultimately, the election will come down to a choice between Trump and President Joe Biden, with many voters expressing dissatisfaction with both candidates.

    • Effectively communicating achievements despite challengesBiden's team faces challenges in reaching the public with their message, as the opposition's narrative gains traction. Adapting to new ways of communication and using the 'bully pulpit' are key.

President Joe Biden and his team are facing a challenge in effectively communicating his administration's achievements to the public, despite winning off-year elections and economic progress. The "echo chamber" effect limits the reach of Biden's message, and the opposition's narrative that he's bad for the economy and foreign wars is gaining traction. Biden's team can use the "bully pulpit" to their advantage, but communication is a two-way street. People's consumption of news and analysis has changed, making it essential for the administration to adapt and find new ways to engage with the public.

    • Effective communication is more than just winning argumentsListening, empathizing, and finding shared goals are key to effective communication. Democrats should focus on understanding voter concerns in key states to build connections and ultimately win support.

Effective communication is not about winning arguments or persuading people through constant talking. Instead, it's about listening to others, understanding their hopes and fears, and finding common ground. This approach was demonstrated by President Obama, who was criticized for not getting his message out but was most powerful when he asked people what they cared about. It's essential to recognize that no one likes losing arguments, so focusing on winning is not an effective strategy. Instead, it's crucial to listen, empathize, and find shared goals. Moreover, worrying about election outcomes is natural for Democrats, but it's not productive. It's important to remember that polls are not elections, and people need to make their own decisions. At this point in the race, it looks like Trump and Biden will be the respective nominees. Instead of trying to outdo Trump's boastfulness, Democrats should focus on listening to voters in key states like Kentucky, Ohio, and Wisconsin. By understanding their concerns and addressing them, Democrats can build a stronger connection and ultimately win their support.

    • The 2024 U.S. Election: Stakes are Higher than EverThe 2024 U.S. election is crucial due to potential democratic institution disregard, previous elections managed despite policy disagreements, Biden is the right person to face Trump, age concerns should be addressed openly, European allies closely watching, dialogue and collaboration essential despite disagreements.

The 2024 U.S. election is of paramount importance due to the potential consequences of another term for a leader like Donald Trump, who has shown disregard for democratic institutions. The speaker emphasizes that previous elections, even with significant policy disagreements, were manageable because all parties involved respected the democratic process. However, the current political climate is different, and the stakes are much higher. The speaker believes that President Biden is the right person to face Trump in the election and encourages openness about age as a way to address potential concerns. Looking back at the speaker's experience as a U.S. ambassador to London, they believe that European allies will be watching closely and will have concerns about another Trump term, but they remain hopeful that dialogue and collaboration will continue despite disagreements.

    • Cultivating trust and understandingBuilding trust and respect requires authenticity, spirited disagreements, and hard work, not winning arguments or demanding them.

Trust, respect, and understanding in relationships between countries and within societies are byproducts, not products. They are cultivated through spirited disagreements and hard work, not by trying to win arguments or demanding them. The speaker emphasized the importance of domestic diplomacy and the need to replenish the reservoir of trust, respect, and understanding within societies. The example of George Santos, who lied his way into Congress and was later kicked out, serves as a reminder of the consequences of dishonesty and the importance of authenticity in building trust and respect. Ultimately, the speaker expressed concern about the divisions within the United States and the United Kingdom and urged for efforts to address these issues domestically.

    • Power of winning in politicsPoliticians who can win elections, even if they're fantasists, tend to stay in power, while those who can't, like George Santos, are easily replaced.

While both Donald Trump and George Santos can be considered fantasists, the reason why one is still a prominent figure in politics while the other was ousted comes down to their ability to win. Trump's continued influence lies in his power to potentially primary opponents and ruin political careers, making it risky for Republicans to publicly challenge him. Santos, on the other hand, was exposed as a loser and was therefore easily replaced. Ultimately, the political landscape favors those who can continue to win elections, regardless of their fantasist tendencies.

Biden's TV debate disaster - will he now be replaced?

Biden's TV debate disaster - will he now be replaced?

This was a TV debate unlike any other. Excruciating doesn’t even cover it.

Whilst Trump confidently lied his way through the facts, Biden barely reached the end of his sentences without meandering off into a far distant phrase.

It was painful to watch and it will raise serious questions now amongst senior Democrats. Can they, must they replace Joe Biden as their presidential candidate?

And if so who will be the first top figure to say it out loud?

We take you through the most painful moments of the night and the conversations after the debate and ask if the voters will forgive this more easily - or if it’s time to take drastic action to save the Democratic Party from disaster in November.

How is Donald Trump planning his revenge?

Donald Trump is wondering aloud what prison would be like.

He probably doesn't have to -it's extremely unlikely that the sentence eventually handed down to him in July will be custodial. But his MAGA henchmen are already talking about what happens if he wins in November, and what their revenge on the prosecutors who tried him will be.

Has belief in the rule of law amongst MAGA voters broken down? And what is this doing to America?

And whilst one trial is behind us, another has just kicked off.

Trump is found guilty in New York.

Just before 5pm on Thursday New York time the airwaves started cracking with news of an imminent verdict. Twenty minutes later the jury in a Manhattan court returned. And pronounced Donald Trump guilty on each one of the 34 counts.

The Trump first trial, over hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels, is over. The real question is, as the jury deliberate - will he be found guilty?

"He should go to jail!" Michael Cohen tell's Donald Trump's trial

If the adult porn director Stormy Daniels was the star witness of the Trump trial last week, this week it got even hotter. Trump's former fixer, friend and lawyer took the stand.

Except now, Michael Cohen is no friend of Trump. What's more, he's a convicted felon, a liar and a perjurer. Will his presence as a key witness help or hinder the prosecution? And does it matter that he's told a jury he'd like to see Trump jailed?

Stormy Daniels takes the stand against Donald Trump

Stormy Daniels takes the stand against Donald Trump

In a surprise move, the sex worker and pornstar Stormy Daniels appeared as a witness yesterday in the trial of Donald Trump to reveal details of the night they spent together in a Nevada hotel room.

The details were specific, and to some ears rather lurid - and included a description of her beating him on the backside with a rolled up magazine. None of this is illegal - but what might be is the money she alleges he paid her to hush it up - money from his campaign funds.

Later, we revisit dog murderer-in-chief Kristi Noem's fortunes as a potential VP pick. And ask what happened overnight in Indiana.

Carol Platt Liebau: Distrusting the IRS

The Biden administration is seeking 87,000 more IRS agents to make sure every last tax dollar is collected from the wallets of hard-working Americans.

But if they’re that desperate, they should be more careful about the way they hand it out. Apparently, the feds have lost at least $276 billion dollars that was designated as covid-19 relief funding, according to the combined estimates provided by inspectors general of the Treasury and Labor Departments, along with the Small Business Administration.

The Labor Department’s Inspector General estimated that $76 billion dollars set aside for unemployment insurance was lost through fraud. And at least $86 billion dollars was misappropriated via fraud and waste at the SBA, according to its inspector general. Both said those figures were likely to rise.

Leona Helmsley once famously said that paying taxes was only for the little people. But nowadays, actually being held accountable for taxpayer money is obviously the rarity.

Julia Galef on how to argue better and change your mind more

Julia Galef on how to argue better and change your mind more
At least in politics, this is an era of awful arguments. Arguments made in bad faith. Arguments in which no one, on either side, is willing to change their mind. Arguments where the points being made do not describe, or influence, the positions being held. Arguments that leave everyone dumber, angrier, sadder. Which is why I wanted to talk to Julia Galef this week. Julia is the host of the Rationally Speaking podcast, a co-founder of the Center for Applied Rationality, and the creator of the Update Project, which maps out arguments to make it easier for people to disagree clearly and productively. Her work focuses on how we think and argue, as well as the cognitive biases and traps that keep us from hearing what we're really saying, hearing what others are really saying, and preferring answers that make us feel good to answers that are true. I first met her at a Vox Conversation conference, where she ran a session helping people learn to change their minds, and it's struck me since then that more of us could probably use that training. In this episode, Julia and I talk about what she's learned about thinking more clearly and arguing better, as well as my concerns that the traditional paths toward a better discourse open up new traps of their own. (As you'll hear, I find it very easy to get lost in all the ways debate and cognition can go awry.) We talk about signaling, about motivated reasoning, about probabilistic debating, about which identities help us find truth, and about how to make online arguments less terrible. Enjoy!
