Why is President Biden sending 1,500 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border?

    enMay 02, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Prioritize self-care when feeling under the weatherSelf-care, like using Instacart for essentials delivery, can help you rest and recover, increasing productivity in the long run. Title 42, a COVID-related immigration policy, ends on May 11, leading to a potential surge in legal and undocumented immigration.

When you're feeling under the weather and the pressure to work is high, prioritize self-care. Instead of pushing through illness, consider using services like Instacart to deliver essentials to your doorstep. This will allow you to rest and recover, ultimately making you more productive in the long run. Meanwhile, on a different note, Title 42, a COVID-related implementation that kept people out of the country based on health concerns, is ending on May 11. This change is expected to result in a significant increase in legal and undocumented immigration. The end of Title 42 marks a shift in border policies, which have excluded large numbers of people from entering the country over the past few years.

    • Managing the influx of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico borderThe Biden administration is working to process asylum claims and manage the influx of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, but the immediate impact of new measures is uncertain due to the large number of individuals seeking entry.

The ongoing situation at the U.S.-Mexico border is expected to result in surges of migrants that could overwhelm certain areas. Many people are coming across the border without proper knowledge of legal entry points, leading to overloaded border cities. The backlog of people with potential asylum claims or other reasons for entering the U.S. has built up due to previous border closures, causing an influx of individuals trying to make their claims. The Biden administration is attempting to alleviate this issue by creating local consulates and offices in other countries to process claims, but the immediate impact starting May 11th is uncertain. The challenge lies in managing the influx of migrants while ensuring the capacity to process their claims fairly and efficiently.

    • US Deploys 1,500 Troops to Assist Border ControlThe US deploys 1,500 troops to help border control agencies with administrative tasks, amidst reports of a migrant caravan heading towards the US border.

The US is preparing for a potential surge of migrants at the southern border and is deploying 1,500 active-duty troops to support border control efforts. The troops will primarily assist with administrative tasks, such as data entry and logistics, to help alleviate the workload on Border Patrol agents. The use of active-duty troops for border control has been a contentious issue in the past, and the optics of having military personnel on US soil may raise concerns from some. However, the focus of the deployment is not on enforcement but on providing support to border control agencies. The deployment comes amidst reports of a caravan of migrants making their way towards the US border, and the situation is expected to be addressed further on May 11th.

Despite the military presence at the border, the visual appearance may not change significantly, with troops likely to be in administrative roles. Meanwhile, 74% of Americans are overweight, emphasizing the need for weight loss and metabolic health improvement. Prolon, a plant-based nutrition program, offers support for this goal. As the seasons change, consider taking advantage of the Hyundai Getaway Sales Event for deals on award-winning Hyundai models. Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Knowing how to swim isn't just out of fun for the summer, it's also important to recognize that not everyone has always had the opportunity to learn to swim. This is why it is so important to recognize, in order to save lives around the water-- swimming lessons should be available for everyone.

"Only 46% of Black and 47% of Latine children had swimming lessons, compared to 72% of white children," according to a parent survey (Northwestern/Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago). Studies show there is a generational influence, if the parent doesn't know how to swim, most likely, the child will not learn either.

To help break this cycle, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas is stepping in with the goal to eliminate childhood drowning (CDC says drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4). The Y partners with apartment complexes across the metroplex to offer free Safety Around Water lessons (SAW) to children who otherwise wouldn't have access. Last year, the SAW program served 5,834 swimmers!

On Ask the Expert, Jen Pewitt joined the KRLD Afternoon News. She is the Vice President of the YMCA Metropolitan Dallas.
