The inquiry into the incident was damning, revealing that those responsible for ensuring the safety of the building and its occupants had failed them in numerous ways. The victims and their families are still seeking justice. The incident exposed long-standing concerns about the safety of tower blocks and the response of local authorities. The Grenfell Tower tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety and addressing community concerns to prevent such tragedies from occurring.

The Grenfell Tower fire was a devastating tragedy that left a deep impact on those who witnessed it firsthand. The speaker, a former MP, recounted her experience of arriving at the scene and seeing people trapped inside the burning building. She knew the fire services were doing everything they could, but the experience motivated her to seek justice for all those affected. The subsequent report revealed numerous parties, including the government, tenant management organization, and construction firms, were found to have contributed to the disaster. The Prime Minister acknowledged the need for truth and justice, and the speaker expressed a desire for immediate action and industry-wide change. The event raised fundamental questions about social justice in the country and served as a call to address the failures within the construction industry.

    • Building Safety, Justice for VictimsThe Grenfell Tower fire disaster underscores the importance of prioritizing building safety and ensuring swift justice for victims, but the complex legal process and vast costs involved may lead to growing public impatience and concern.

The Grenfell Tower fire disaster and its aftermath have highlighted the importance of prioritizing building safety and ensuring swift justice for victims. Despite promises from politicians like Keir Starmer, the criminal justice process is expected to take a long time due to the complexity of the case and the vast legal costs involved. The public is growing increasingly impatient and concerned about the lengthy process, with some feeling that justice has already been denied. The police and legal system must be robust in their pursuit of convictions, but the pressure to build new homes and boost the economy should not come at the expense of safety and accountability. It's crucial that the construction industry learns from past mistakes and implements necessary reforms before new buildings are erected. Ultimately, the priority should be to balance the need for growth with the need for safety and justice for all.

    • Building safety and tenant voicesThe Grenfell Tower tragedy emphasizes the importance of prioritizing tenant safety and voices in both social and private housing sectors, starting with the right foundation, and investing in decent housing as a moral imperative and economically beneficial measure.

The Grenfell Tower tragedy underscores the urgent need for a cultural shift in how we approach building safety and tenant voices in both social and private housing sectors. The discussion highlighted the importance of starting with the right foundation, avoiding the same "build, build, build" approach that led to unsafe buildings in the past. It also emphasized the need for tenants, particularly those in social housing, to have more power and a voice in their living conditions. The issue of accountability and the lack of representation for tenants in private rented accommodation was also raised. The discussion concluded that investing in decent housing is economically beneficial and a moral imperative, regardless of political affiliations. The tragic event at Grenfell Tower serves as a reminder that every life matters, and those in positions of power must prioritize the safety and well-being of all tenants.

    • Housing safety prioritizationThe Grenfell tragedy underscores the importance of prioritizing safety in housing and the need for political will to make it a priority. Individuals can also play a role in advocating for tenants and holding those in power accountable.

Persistence and seizing opportunities can lead to remarkable career progression. Gary Richardson, sharing his story, revealed how he went from being rejected as a presenter at the BBC to becoming a sports journalist for the Today program. After being encouraged to apply to the BBC, he landed a job at their archives as a junior researcher. His determination and eagerness led him to various roles, including helping out at local radio stations. One fateful day, he was the first on the scene of an IRA bomb explosion and reported it to the newsroom, which earned him recognition and an opportunity to join the Today program's sports team. The media landscape has changed significantly since then, but the importance of being persistent, seizing opportunities, and building relationships remains crucial in achieving professional success.

    • Building personal connectionsEstablishing rapport and a friendly demeanor are essential for gaining access to influential figures. Persistence and adaptability are also key in securing interviews with high-profile individuals.

Building personal connections was a crucial aspect of gaining access to influential figures in the worlds of politics and sports during the speaker's career. From befriending football legends like Bobby Charlton and George Best on the After Dinner circuit, to securing an interview with Bill Clinton at Wimbledon, the speaker's ability to establish rapport and relax interviewees, even as a young and nervous journalist, was key to his success. Whether it was Brian Clough making tea in his office or Muhammad Ali's sad and unbroadcastable interview, these encounters showcased the importance of persistence, adaptability, and a friendly demeanor in securing access to high-profile individuals. While modern-day figures like Pep Guardiola might be less approachable, the lessons learned from these experiences remain valuable in the realm of journalism and beyond.

    • Connection and making people feel specialAuthentic interactions can leave a lasting impression and create meaningful experiences, whether it's connecting with influential figures or pursuing personal goals.

The power of connection and making people feel special can leave a lasting impression. Gary Rhodes shared two stories from his career where he met influential figures, Bill Clinton and Robert Maxwell, and was surprised by their genuine interest and engagement. In another story, he spoke about how he fulfilled a lifelong dream of singing with a big band after his father's influence. These experiences highlight the importance of authentic interactions and the impact they can have, whether it's a politician seeking to connect with the public or a broadcaster pursuing a personal goal.

Gary Lineker shared stories of singing with a piano player who played for Nat King Cole, living the dream of interviewing Nigel Mansell during his lap of honor at the British Grand Prix, and the importance of being quick, witty, and prepared during interviews. These moments, though unexpected, brought him immense joy and made his career memorable. Lineker's interviewing technique involves not preparing beforehand for difficult interviews but being ready to ask probing questions and extract new stories. He also emphasized the importance of being quick and witty in interviews, as well as being a generous colleague. As he retires, Lineker looks forward to occasional appearances on the radio and continuing to tell stories. Will the victims of Grenfell ever get justice?

A scathing report from the public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire has concluded that all 72 deaths were avoidable – but were the result of a chain of failures by governments, "dishonest" companies and a lack of strategy by the fire service.

Nick assesses whether anyone will now be held accountable – and whether this might be the moment that substandard social housing becomes a major political issue.

He’s joined by Emma Dent Coad, the former Labour MP for Kensington who had just been elected to represent Grenfell constituents at the time of the fire, to reflect on that morning and the subsequent campaign for justice.

And Nick and Amol also speak to Today sports presenter Garry Richardson ahead of his final programme, fifty years to the day he joined the BBC.

Starmer’s ‘black holes’: What will fill them?

Starmer’s ‘black holes’: What will fill them?

“Things will get worse before they get better.” That was the gloomy warning given by Keir Starmer this week, in his first major speech since becoming prime minister.

Labour have previously blamed the Tories for the ‘economic black hole’ they say they’ve found in the public finances since taking office. But what did Starmer mean when he referred to a ‘societal black hole’ left by his predecessors? And if there are cracks in British society, how does the government fix them?

Amol and Nick are joined by Starmer’s former director of policy and expert on the working class Claire Ainsley – now a director at the left-leaning thinktank, the Progressive Policy Institute.

And Tom Walker - the comedian behind the fictitious political correspondent Jonathan Pie - is in the studio to give his moment of the week and reminisce on some of his favourite bloopers by news reporters.

Social media and the riots: Musk, misinformation and moral responsibility.

Elon Musk has repeatedly attacked Sir Keir Starmer on his platform ‘X’ this week over the handling of riots in England and Northern Ireland.

The disorder follows the fatal stabbing last week of three young girls in Southport and has been fuelled by misinformation online, the far-right and anti-immigration sentiment.

This week Amol looks at whether social media companies should be forced to go further in stopping the spread of misinformation online.

He is joined by David Wilding, a former director of Twitter UK who resigned when Musk took over, and former Facebook trust & safety manager Professor Victoria Baines, now at Gresham College.

And University Challenge’s Roger Tilling returns to the podcast to chat about the new series – and his moment of the week.

Mary Beard on power, succession and rebellions

Mary Beard on power, succession and rebellions

This week Keir Starmer dealt with a Labour rebellion on the two-child benefit cap that saw the whip removed from seven of his MPs. Meanwhile in America, Kamala Harris has moved quickly to mobilise her campaign and define her Republican rival.

To make sense of it all, Nick and Amol turn to Prof Mary Beard for a classical perspective on power, succession, and rebellions. What was Cicero’s advice for winning elections? Which Latin quote did John F Kennedy incorrectly use in a famous speech? And why does she hate being asked which Roman emperor most resembles Donald Trump?

She also updates them on her campaign for membership of the - until very recently - male-only private members’ club, the Garrick.
