Meanwhile, Airbnb provides an opportunity for individuals to monetize their homes when they're not in use. Elsewhere in the discussion, the importance of understanding history and interrogating the past, even in the context of complex societal issues, was emphasized. The conversation touched upon the role of figures like Michael Collins in Irish history and the potential impact of significant historical events on individuals' lives. Overall, the conversation highlighted the importance of taking charge of one's health and making the most of available resources, while also encouraging a deeper exploration of history.

    • Media bias and underreported storiesMedia dominance by one party can overlook important issues, like the killing of Joe Campbell, and limit representation, perpetuating an echo chamber

The dominance of one political party in the media can lead to important issues being overlooked or underreported. The discussion highlighted the case of the killing of Joe Campbell and the lack of coverage it has received compared to cultural wars. The speaker also pointed out the absence of individuals from Sinn Fein or republican backgrounds in the national media, creating an imbalance in representation. The historical example of the Collins family, with their political influence and involvement in various roles, was given to illustrate this trend. This lack of diversity in media can result in significant stories being overlooked, perpetuating an echo chamber that reinforces existing narratives rather than promoting reflection and understanding.

    • Irish establishment's perceived contempt towards Sinn Fein and nationalist communityThe speaker calls for open dialogue and acceptance of different communities, challenging the establishment's attitude towards housing efforts and symbols of division.

The speaker expresses deep frustration with the Irish establishment's perceived contempt towards Sinn Fein and the nationalist community. They believe that the establishment, including the media, is trying to paint efforts to address housing issues as irresponsible and detrimental to landlords. The speaker is passionate about challenging this attitude and believes that it's time for a new Ireland, with open dialogue and acceptance of different communities. They also suggest that symbols of division, like the "Upda Rah" song, should not be the centerpiece of celebrations if they are meant to be inclusive. The speaker's tone is impassioned and reflects a desire for reconciliation and understanding between different communities in Ireland.

    • Songs and Chants in Northern Ireland: A Sensitive IssueBe mindful of the impact of songs and chants on different communities, and strive for inclusivity and understanding in discussions about a united Ireland.

The use of certain chants and songs, such as "Up the Ra," at events in Northern Ireland can be hurtful to the Protestant community and perceived as an attack on Sinn Fein. This issue is not just about the songs themselves, but also about how they are used by the establishment as part of a culture war. The timing of discussions about a united Ireland is also important, with some arguing that it's not the right time for such conversations. The situation in Northern Ireland is complex, with historical tensions and political dynamics at play. It's essential to consider the impact of our words and actions on different communities and to strive for inclusivity and understanding.

    • The need for dialogue between unionists and advocates for a United IrelandEngaging in meaningful dialogue with individuals of good faith from both communities is essential for progress, as politicians follow public opinion. The Irish establishment's reluctance to discuss the issue further underscores the importance of open dialogue, with potential for a significant power shift if Sinn Fein continues to lead the conversation.

Meaningful dialogue and understanding between unionists and those advocating for a United Ireland is crucial for moving forward, despite the potential for political spin or culture wars. The speaker emphasizes the importance of engaging with individuals of good faith from both communities, as politicians often follow public opinion. The Irish establishment's reluctance to discuss the issue further highlights the need for open dialogue and the potential for a euphoric shift in power dynamics if Sinn Fein continues to lead these discussions. The speaker encourages recognizing the problem and addressing it diplomatically, with the hope that such discussions will bring about positive change.

    • End of conflict and hope for peace in Northern IrelandThe Good Friday Agreement brought an end to decades of conflict in Northern Ireland, promising equality and the establishment of a police force. However, concerns about potential dominance of Sinn Fein and political dynasties remain.

The signing of the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland brought about a sense of exhilaration and liberation for the people there, leading to celebrations reminiscent of a national victory. The agreement marked the end of decades of conflict and promised the establishment of a police force and equal treatment for all citizens. However, there are concerns in the Republic of Ireland, particularly from Fianna Fail, about the potential dominance of Sinn Fein in a united Ireland. The discussion also touched upon the issue of political dynasties and their control over the country, raising concerns about potential corruption and self-interest. Overall, the Good Friday Agreement brought hope for peace and equality, but there are still risks and challenges to be addressed.

    • Building inter-community relationships for unityIn post-conflict areas, fostering inter-community relationships and understanding is crucial for overcoming deep-rooted divisions. Influential figures and community organizations can play a significant role in driving change, but addressing past history and bridging gaps between isolated communities is essential for promoting unity.

The key to overcoming deep-rooted divisions and promoting unity in societies, particularly in post-conflict areas like Northern Ireland, lies in fostering inter-community relationships and understanding. People like Owen and Brent, who are ideologically driven, play a crucial role in driving change. However, it's important to acknowledge that corruption and fear can still be present, even in post-revolutionary countries. The ANC in South Africa serves as an example. History and how we address it is significant. Partition in Ireland was a disaster, but if the country could unite now, it could bring people together, even those with opposing viewpoints. The dam is starting to break in Northern Ireland, with influential figures from the north, such as James Nesbitt and Carl Frampton, speaking out about the need for dialogue. The GAA, with its ability to bring people together regardless of location, serves as an excellent example of community building. However, it's important to remember that many Protestant communities in Northern Ireland remain isolated, and bridging these gaps is essential for promoting unity. Politicians who once would have shied away from supporting inter-community initiatives are now starting to embrace them. This shift towards greater understanding and collaboration is crucial for fostering a more peaceful and inclusive society.

    • Open dialogue and understanding for effective changeEffective change requires ongoing dialogue and understanding between different communities. Progress may be slow, but it's important to support those promoting peace and understanding.

Effective change requires open dialogue and understanding between different communities, rather than entrenched supremacist positions. The example given of a presentation by Feeney and McGlease to the loyalist community in Northern Ireland, which led to peaceful interactions and even joint events, illustrates this. However, this progress can be difficult to achieve and may require individuals to engage in challenging conversations. As the speaker noted, it's important not to dismiss the efforts of those who are trying to promote peace and understanding, even if it seems like progress is slow. Additionally, while some things may change rapidly, such as the role of individuals from different backgrounds in positions of power, the need for open dialogue and understanding remains constant.

The unbearable agony of Palestine. Part 2. With Gideon Levy

The unbearable agony of Palestine. Part 2. With Gideon Levy

Gideon Levy says he is an Israeli patriot. But he is a patriot in a land where truth is seen as treason. In Part 2 of his Free State interview, Gideon Levy provides a frightening insight into Israel today. As Israeli government censorship looks to silence the truth about Gaza, he tells Joe and Dion what happens to those who write honestly about the plight of the Palestinians.  He talks about how in Tel Aviv recently, a woman on the street called him a traitor. And he explains why the removal of Benjamin Netanyahu from office is not going to deliver the change many liberals believe.

The unbearable agony of Palestine. Part 1. With Gideon Levy

The unbearable agony of Palestine. Part 1. With Gideon Levy

When Gideon Levy was a teenager growing up in Israel he was devoted to the ‘nationalistic religious orgy’ in the country. Today, as a journalist working for Haaretz, he has been described as the ‘most hated man in Israel’. His fearless determination to record the suffering of the Palestinians has seen him banned from reporting in Gaza by the Israeli government since 2006.

On a two part special, Gideon Levy joins Dion and Joe on Free State. He talks about how, even as the atrocities mount in Rafah, Israeli society doesn’t want to know. He explains why many in the country care more about the fate of animals than those suffering in Gaza. He also tells Joe and Dion about his own journey from one who believed all he was told in Israel about the Palestinians to a man who courageously tells the truth in a country that doesn’t want to hear it.
