    About this Episode

The "Immigration issue" may be the key thing that determines all the control of power next November in America.    And ALEXA going all MAGA loco in millions of households isn't helping either.   Obviously we need to SLAP some light on how we can help navigate this often misunderstood and vital issue.    So we chose to get someone in who could help us understand it like we were musicians who didnt know what we were talking about.

Enter our delightful interview today, Liz Cannon, a seasoned immigration attorney who graces our show with her great takes on why most of our leaders don't actually want to help solve this issue and instead how WE can help each other fix this. You're going to want to listen in as Liz dissects the silliness of US immigration law, clearing up misconceptions about undocumented immigrants, and she helps explain to us what the F a 601A waiver process is. :)

I mean...do you know the difference between those who enter the US with a visa and those who cross the border without documentation?   How many people overstay their visas vs cross at the borders?    With Liz's guidance, we limp through this complex terrain together, shedding light on the impact of changing immigration laws under different administrations and she also touches on the deeper, class-based issues contributing to the current immigration predicament and exposing how these factors play into the exploitation of immigrants.  We round off with Liz by discussing the power of individual advocacy. Reminding ourselves that even a simple phone call can influence immigration policy. Liz generously shares resources for listeners interested in supporting immigration reform.

We also debut our new segment the "Wish Factor (AKA I wish a MF would!)", where we imagine dealing with difficult situations, that you kinda wish would happen.   We leave you with another humorous TOURROR STORY from the road (Halloween edition) to lighten the mood.

So jump in with us as we try and SLAP some sense into the ridiculous and insanely important issue of immigration today.

and as Liz said on our episode, sometimes, calling your representatives and demand to be heard on action to help our broken immigration system.

Climate Change Head-on: The Power of Innovation, Legislation and Global Cooperation feat. Dr. Keith Wolf

Climate Change Head-on: The Power of Innovation, Legislation and Global Cooperation feat. Dr. Keith Wolf

Join us as we try to slap some sense into the air about the stark realities of climate change with the incredible Dr. Keith Wolf.  Dr. Wolf is a NOAA ambassador, and a lauded documentary filmmaker (most notably Under the Puget Sound, as well as the upcoming documentary series OCEANS, and the more hopeful INNOVATIONS), as he unravels the dire consequences of species loss and the intriguing implications of the Endangered Species Act of 1997. What are the potential solutions hidden in technological innovation and climate literacy that can turn the tide on environmental degradation?  We try and pick at it the best we can with Keith!

Our conversation veers into the urgent need to address global climate change and the crucial insights of the IPCC report. We explore the influence of even our own Electoral College on climate change and our own impact on developing nations. Dr. Wolf's first-hand experiences freshly from working on his two upcoming documentary series (OCEANS, and INNOVATIONS) take us deeper into the vital need for more climate change discourse.

Last, we highlight emerging technologies that offer incredible promise to transform environmental conservation.   And yeah, leave us having some HOPE!   It's a wild ride through the perils of touring in the music industry in our latest TOURROR STORIES segment as well as another WISH FACTOR segment.   We get silly to cleanse our palette, but at the heart this episode is all about how we, as a global community, can rise above the pressing climate crisis and make a difference.   NO AMOUNT TOO SMALL if we are trying together.

Confronting Adultification: A Deeper Dive into Childhood Maturity with Ty Taylor

Confronting Adultification: A Deeper Dive into Childhood Maturity with Ty Taylor

Picture this - a rambunctious child, full of energy and curiosity, yet pegged as an adult long before his time. Sounds unthinkable, right? But it's a harsh reality for many black and brown children due to the disturbing phenomenon known as adultification. To unpack this sensitive issue, we've invited the one and only Ty Taylor(@taylorty), lead singer of Vintage Trouble (as well as a million other things you may or may not know him from), down to the studio to help chop up this delicate topic and put the male perspective on the other side of this 2 part episode.

Our heartfelt conversation with Ty brings light to the challenges faced by black and brown children who are unjustly pushed into adulthood because of societal perceptions and punitive justice systems. Ty's personal stories, along with our discussions around identity and self-reflection, reveal the damaging consequences of adultification. We also touch upon the hypersexualization of children, a distressing repercussion of the weakening family structure in black and brown communities. But it's not all darkness and despair. We also explore the potential of positive role models and influential celebrities in bringing about change and rebuilding these communities.

The episode concludes on a hopeful note as we explore available resources and emphasize the importance of unity and solidarity during such challenging times. A revisit to our past episode with Maya and KC (@dazitdazall), adds a different perspective to the conversation. We urge you to join us in this enlightening exploration into the adultification of our brothers and sisters children - an episode that promises to stir your emotions, provoke thought, and inspire action.

The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline has counselors available 24 hours every day to talk with children and adults about abuse and neglect. To reach a Childhelp counselor, call 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453) and then press 1.

Countering Adultification: Tackling Systemic Oppression and Racial Bias (with Maiya and KC Carnage)

Countering Adultification: Tackling Systemic Oppression and Racial Bias (with Maiya and KC Carnage)

Have you ever considered the alarming rate at which adultification and hypersexualization affects black children, particularly girls? This week, we grapple with this devastating societal issue, guided by the searing personal insights from our guest, KC Carnage. Join us as we unravel the complex implications of adultification, which robs black kids of their innocence and burdens them with expectations far beyond their years.

Immerse yourself in the chilling case of 16-year-old Ralph Yarl, and let it serve as a poignant reminder of how adultification bias has been claiming innocent lives, especially within the black community. We then detour into the media landscape, dissecting its role in perpetuating harmful stereotypes. We confront systemic oppression head-on, bringing into focus racial bias in healthcare and the propagation of damaging tropes like the "angry black woman."

As our conversation evolves, we cast a spotlight on mental health and its impact on communities of color. We recount a harrowing journey to Crimea, combining cultural exploration with the stark realities of systemic oppression. We conclude with a reflection on our encounters in Russia and the importance of thorough research before traveling. Engage with us in this vital dialogue, and consider the role you can play in countering adultification bias. Tune in, and let's learn and grow together!

Reimagining Safety - Changing the narrative of policing and community (feat. Filmmaker Matthew Solomon)

Reimagining Safety - Changing the narrative of policing and community (feat. Filmmaker Matthew Solomon)

It has to be about time we rethink safety and policing, especially in the wake of the George Floyd tragedy.   Like so many of us, we know things need to change.   But what can we do about it?    We grappled with this question and more in a crucial conversation with the thought-provoking documentary filmmaker, Matthew Solomon. His film, Reimagining Safety, challenges us to consider a more humane approach to policing in our communities. Together, we delve into the disturbing reality of over-militarization, the damage caused by societal biases, and the urgent need for police reform.

We don't just stop there; we also take a closer look at the importance of empathy and changing the narrative on "defunding" the police when it is really "reallocating" the police resources in ways that work better for everyone.   Especially the police.   As we explore the potential implications of this action, Matthew shares his fascinating journey from music school to filmmaking. From his passion for conflict resolution to his understanding of societal structures, we uncover the inspiration behind his impactful work and Rick and Maiya are right there to really help get into it. This episode promises to be a blend of serious discussions, comedic rug-pulling, personal anecdotes, and enlightening insights from a filmmaker at the forefront of social change along with 2 touring musicians trying to make sense of it all.

We also let you in on some secrets from the road with the launch of our new segment "TORROR STORIES!!!".  Check out crazy tales from the road from @maiyasykes and @rickbarriodill that you can only get on StP.  And finally, we discuss the significance of art and storytelling in driving societal progress. It's a jam-packed episode that we hope will provoke thought, inspire change, make ya laugh and ignite conversations. Reimagine safety with us and tune in, let's explore this together.

Flipping the Script on the Single Use Plastic Problem with Dianna Cohen and Amelia Hanson

Flipping the Script on the Single Use Plastic Problem with Dianna Cohen and Amelia Hanson

In this episode, we are joined by the passionate Dianna Cohen and Amelia Hanson of Plastic Pollution Coalition, whose work is aimed at changing the narrative around single-use plastics globally, as well as locally here in Los Angeles in the entertainment industry, one set at a time.

Whether it's a disposable coffee cup casually discarded by a lead character, or the heaps of plastic waste in a single day's shooting, there is zero denying plastic is the new cigarette.   And much like cigarettes not being used in our entertainment culture anymore,  plastics need to follow suit.   Both are awful.  But one is awful for YOU, the other is killing US.

But change IS possible and necessary.   And surprisingly small changes in our lives can have huge impacts.  In this episode, Cohen and Hanson shed light on the health risks associated with plastic pollution and share how their initiative, "Flip the Script on Plastics", is challenging the status quo.

The conversation doesn't stop there; we explore the impacts of plastic production on marginalized communities and the plastic industry's greenwashing tactics. Plus, we share some personal tales from our tours, revealing the sometimes hilarious, sometimes horrifying, role single-use plastics play in our game. We wrap up examining the potential for businesses and production companies to make a positive impact by eliminating single-use plastics from their operations and storylines.

From discussing alternative dog poop bags to addressing the impact of chemicals found in plastic, we're not shying away from uncomfortable truths.   We are guilty as charged. But this episode isn't just about criticism, it's about solutions and inspiration.

We hope it inspires you too.
