    enApril 08, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Discussing Theater, Gender Stereotypes, and Lies in Dating ProfilesThe hosts, Dylan and Bill, shared their theater backgrounds and empathized with each other's experiences. They debated societal stereotypes and acknowledged their complexities, while also discussing the role of lies in dating profiles and the importance of authenticity.

The hosts discussed various topics, including their experiences as theater kids, the excitement of playing a new game featuring their friend Brett Cooper, and debating societal stereotypes. Dylan sympathized with Dylan Mulvaney due to their shared theater background, and Bill sympathized with Dylan's father because of his own experiences as a theater kid. They also discussed the societal norms surrounding gender and driving, and the appropriateness of lies in dating profiles. Despite some disagreements, they acknowledged that stereotypes can contain elements of truth but should not be taken as absolute truths. The episode highlighted their engaging and humorous banter, making it one of their favorite episodes.

    • Authenticity and integrity matter mostBe genuine and honest in personal appearances and online profiles to build meaningful connections. Avoid dishonesty in dating profiles and focus on substance in online interactions.

Authenticity and integrity are valued more than superficial enhancements in both personal appearances and online profiles. The speaker expressed a preference for natural beauty and genuine personalities over excessive plastic surgery and edited photos. The issue of dishonesty in dating profiles, particularly regarding height and salary, was also discussed. Many people engage in online conversations without any intention of meeting in person, leading to a lack of substance in these interactions. The speaker suggested that being upfront and honest about one's nonnegotiables could lead to more meaningful connections.

    • Honesty and clear communication in dating appsBeing upfront about intentions and values can save time and energy in dating app relationships, leading to more meaningful connections. It's essential to be true to oneself and not play games to avoid confusion and frustration.

Honesty and clear communication are crucial in any relationship, even those initiated through dating apps. The conversation shared in the text illustrates the importance of being upfront about intentions and desires. While some people may not know exactly what they want, they definitely know what they don't want. Being honest and intentional can save time and energy for both parties. However, the dating app scene can be "gamey," and it's essential to be clear about personal beliefs and values to avoid wasting time on unsuitable matches. Ultimately, being honest and intentional can lead to more meaningful connections. Additionally, the conversation also touches on the importance of being true to oneself and not playing games in relationships. The constant double standard can lead to confusion and frustration. It's essential to be clear about what one wants and not expect others to read minds. Furthermore, Dennis Breaker's perspective on dating apps emphasizes the importance of being intentional and clear about personal beliefs and values. By being upfront about one's intentions and values, one can avoid wasting time on unsuitable matches and potentially find more meaningful connections.

    • A modern feminist perspective on self-empowermentThe speaker appreciated a feminist perspective that focuses on self-empowerment rather than hating men, and shared their skepticism towards some historical stories while reflecting on their personal experiences

The speaker appreciated a modern feminist perspective that focused on self-empowerment rather than hating men. They found the idea that a woman could buy herself flowers or find fulfillment elsewhere to be a refreshing contrast to the often negative tone towards men in modern feminist culture. However, they also expressed skepticism about certain historical stories, such as Helen Keller's ability to fly an airplane, and questioned the authenticity of some accounts. The speaker shared their personal experience of never having to call in sick to work on their 21st birthday, and how they spent their year being responsible and avoiding alcohol before turning 21. Overall, the conversation touched on themes of self-empowerment, skepticism, and personal experiences.

    • Birthdays and unfortunate eventsPeople's experiences and associations with their birthdays can vary greatly, shaped by both positive and negative experiences throughout their lives.

The speaker has had a series of unfortunate events on her birthdays, leading her to associate the day with stress rather than joy. She recounted several instances of taking midterms, getting sick, and missing concerts on her birthdays. Despite her hopes for a good experience in a new city, she ended up getting the flu and canceling plans. The speaker also shared her thoughts on college trends, comparing sockless loafers and Beats by Dre headphones as basic and not cool, but acknowledging that everyone can find enjoyment in seemingly ordinary things. Overall, the speaker's perspective on birthdays and her reflections on growing up and experiencing various trends demonstrate the complexities and nuances of personal experiences.

    • Societal norms and traditions resist changeExploring societal norms and traditions reveals complex issues, such as debates over prostitution and drug decriminalization, requiring open-minded consideration for individual and societal implications.

Societal norms and traditions, such as WASP men wearing sockless loafers, can be deeply ingrained and resistant to change. The discussion also touched upon the historical arguments against further outlawing prostitution due to potential societal convulsions, while decriminalizing drugs like LSD and mushrooms may have less harmful consequences. However, it's important to note that these are complex issues and there are valid arguments on both sides. The conversation also included a personal anecdote about a friend's experience with psychedelics leading to a realization about societal structures. Ultimately, it's essential to approach these topics with an open mind and consider the potential implications for individuals and society as a whole.

    • The effects of psychedelics depend on the individual's mindset and past experiencesPsychedelics can lead to personal growth or negative outcomes, depending on the individual's mindset and past experiences. Always consider the potential risks before use.

Psychedelic experiences can lead to a blurring of the literal and figurative worlds, and the meaning derived from these experiences can vary greatly from person to person. Some people may find peace and a new perspective on life, while others may encounter disturbing hallucinations and negative outcomes. Ultimately, the effects of psychedelics depend on the individual's mindset and past experiences. The speaker shares an anecdote about a friend who mistook ants for the black marble's animate reality while under the influence, and another friend who had hallucinations of demons and felt guilt and despair. Despite the risks, some people believe that everyone should try psychedelics once for the potential personal growth and new perspective on life. However, it's important to remember that these substances can have negative consequences, and individuals should be aware of the potential risks before deciding to use them.

    • The Complexity of Self-Care and Societal ExpectationsReevaluate values and priorities, focusing on what truly matters in self-care and relationships.

There is often an excess of complexity in our lives, particularly when it comes to self-care and societal expectations, especially for women. The speaker shares her frustration with the multitude of skincare products available, suggesting that simpler solutions might be more effective. She also touches upon the idea that societal roles and expectations have shifted, potentially leading to a perceived shallowness in women. However, she also acknowledges that traditional roles do not necessarily equate to depth or grounding. Ultimately, the speaker encourages a reevaluation of values and priorities, advocating for a return to what truly matters, whether that be in personal relationships or self-care routines.

    • Acting in LA vs NY: Focus on appearance vs craftLA prioritizes appearance for on-camera roles, while NY values an actor's craft and ability to embody a character.

The acting industry in Los Angeles versus New York presents vastly different experiences. While LA is known for its focus on appearance and on-camera acting, New York offers a more serious and authentic approach to acting, where an actor's craft and ability to embody a character are prioritized over their appearance. Additionally, the speaker expressed concerns about the potential for AI, such as ChatGPT, to take on a mind of its own, despite it being a creation of human programmers. This discussion highlights the significant differences between the acting industries in New York and Los Angeles and the potential implications of advanced technology.

    • Understanding the Implications of Technology on Modern RelationshipsBe cautious of deep fakes and manipulations, approach complex issues without bias, respect all individuals, navigate relationships with authenticity, and practice critical thinking and fact-checking.

While technological advancements are impressive, it's important to be cautious and aware of potential manipulations, such as deep fakes. The discussion also touched upon the importance of understanding complex issues, like attraction to minors, without bias, and respecting all individuals. Furthermore, the conversation highlighted the challenges of navigating modern relationships and the importance of authenticity. Lastly, the importance of critical thinking and fact-checking in today's information age was emphasized. It's crucial to not be swayed by headlines or sensationalized content and to approach information with a discerning eye.

    • Societal pressures and personal choices impacting delayed transition into adulthood and relationshipsSocietal messages can lead to a sense of being unprepared for relationships later in life, but personal responsibility also plays a role.

Societal pressures and personal choices can contribute to individuals experiencing a delayed transition into adulthood and romantic relationships. The speaker suggests that societal messages encouraging women to prioritize careers over love and marriage can lead to a sense of being lied to and unprepared for relationships later in life. However, it's important to recognize that personal responsibility also plays a role. The speaker acknowledges that some people may cause their own relationship problems due to being particular or focused on other things. Additionally, the speaker reflects on how their own experiences as a theater kid who didn't fit in during puberty make them sympathize with those who transition later in life. Overall, the conversation highlights the complex interplay between societal influences and personal choices in shaping people's experiences of growing up and forming relationships.

    • Our upbringing shapes our perceptions and pathsEmbrace individuality, accept ourselves, and stay true to our values to avoid conforming to harmful stereotypes.

Our upbringing and the conversations we have with significant figures in our lives can shape our perceptions and help us avoid potentially harmful paths. The speaker shared an experience with his mother where she encouraged him to embrace his femininity while retaining his tomboyish traits, preventing him from feeling out of place and conforming to stereotypes. He also discussed the dangers of seeking attention above all else and the importance of staying true to oneself. Additionally, the speaker mentioned his preference for certain types of dogs, emphasizing the importance of having a well-ordered society and understanding the unique qualities of different beings, whether human or canine. Overall, the conversation highlighted the significance of self-awareness, acceptance, and the importance of being true to oneself.

    • Understanding People's Motivations: Personal Experiences, Societal Pressures, and ConveniencePeople's motivations for adopting pets, holding beliefs, or making decisions are influenced by various factors, including personal experiences, societal pressures, and desire for convenience. It's essential to consider the context behind people's actions and beliefs to gain a deeper understanding.

People's motivations for adopting pets or holding certain beliefs can be influenced by various factors, including personal experiences, societal pressures, and desire for convenience. The speaker shared a personal story about adopting a dog named Rocky during college and naming her after a boxer. She also discussed her observations about men's attitudes towards abortion and responsibility. The speaker suggested that some men may hold pro-choice views to avoid potential child support obligations, but it's not the primary reason. Instead, they might believe that women want such freedom and be less inclined to take on the responsibility of a relationship or a child. The conversation also touched on the topic of transgender individuals and societal perceptions, with the speaker expressing her belief that people's beliefs and experiences shape their perspectives. Overall, the conversation highlighted the complexities of human motivations and the importance of understanding the context behind people's actions and beliefs.

    • Personal beliefs and experiences shaping realitiesRecognize how personal biases and experiences influence our perceptions, from dating to paranormal phenomena.

Personal experiences and beliefs can greatly influence perceptions and realities, whether it's about dating, height, or paranormal phenomena. The speaker shares her experiences of seeing "weird things" in the sky and believing in ghosts, while acknowledging the challenges women over 6 feet face in finding dates. She also discusses the societal norms surrounding sexual encounters and how they impact dating dynamics. The conversation then shifts to the existence of ghosts, touching upon religious beliefs and the debate between Catholics and Protestants on the subject. Ultimately, the speaker suggests that while there may be explanations for eerie experiences, it's essential to accept one's reality and find comfort in it.

    • Man's Significance in the UniverseBelieving man is the center of the universe provides a more meaningful perspective, rooted in man being the meeting point of metaphysical and physical reality. Tangible experiences and concepts resonate deeper than abstract theories.

Despite personal experiences with the supernatural, the speaker believes that man holds a significant place in the universe. He acknowledges that all models of the physical universe are inherently flawed, but the idea of man as the center of the universe provides a more meaningful perspective. This belief is rooted in the understanding that man is the meeting point of metaphysical and physical reality. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of tangible experiences and concepts that resonate with us on a deeper level, rather than abstract theories. While the speaker shares personal experiences of encountering the supernatural, the core of their belief lies in the significance of man in the universe.

    • Truth goes beyond scientific facts and expert opinionsEmotion, poetry, myth, revelation, and even wine can reveal deeper truths, surpassing scientific facts and expert opinions.

According to the speakers in this conversation, the search for truth and understanding goes beyond scientific facts and expert opinions. They believe that poetry, myth, revelation, and even wine can provide deeper truths. The idea of the blessed sacrament as a perfect union of physical and metaphysical is more important than a science lecture, even if it's from an esteemed expert like Dr. Fauci. They argue that emotion plays a crucial role in convincing people and that truth can be found in various forms of literature and stories. The speakers also acknowledge that even in wine, truth can be discovered, although it may not always be clear. Ultimately, they value truth above all else and believe that it can be found in unexpected places.

"Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision."

In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I’ve realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don’t realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they’re sharing them with.

My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home.

    The Life We’re Looking For

    The Life We’re Looking For

In the quiet moments of our lives, we can all sense that our hearts long for something, though we often don’t know what that something is. We seek an answer in our phones, and while they can provide some sense of extension and fulfillment — a feeling of magic — the use of technology also comes with significant costs in individual development and interpersonal connection that we typically don’t fully understand and consider.

My guest today will unpack what it is we really yearn for, how technology, when misused, can direct us away from the path to fulfilling those yearnings, and how we can find true human flourishing in a world in which so much works against it. His name is Andy Crouch and he’s the author of The Life We’re Looking For: Reclaiming Relationship in a Technological World. Today on the show we talk about the tradeoffs you make when you seek magic without mastery, and how we can understand our desires better once we understand ourselves as heart, soul, mind, and strength complexes who want to be loved and known. We discuss the difference between interactions that are personal versus personalized, as well as the difference between devices and instruments, and how to use your phone as the latter instead of the former. We end our conversation with why Andy thinks we need to redesign the architecture of our relational lives and create something he calls “households.”
