    Europe in times of war

    Europe in times of war

Europe isn’t safe anymore. For decades we thought that nothing would threaten our continent. Didn’t we have the diplomatic channels of the European Union, the NATO and other institutions? Drs. Caroline de Gruyter, prestigious commentator on European politics, takes the view that Europe has to be more united and better military equipped. Europe has to show its teeth.

    Climate change and geopolitics

Because of climate change geopolitical structures might shift. The ice of the North Pole for instance is melting. Superpowers like Russia have shown their interest in the huge oil and gas supplies there. Does a new cold war lurks at the horizon? Other example: in order to reduce CO2 countries are using more renewable energy sources. Can they become independent of gas- and oil suppliers like Russia and the Middle East or will other dependencies arise? Coby van der Linde, professor of Geopolitics & Energy (University of Groningen) and director of the Clingendael International Energy Program, sheds light on shifting perspectives.

Stem cells: immortality or healthy ageing?

Stem cells: immortality or healthy ageing?
Scientists are now able to reprogram any cell of the human body into pluripotent stem cells. This creates many possibilities for biomedical research because these stem cells can be turned into many other cell types sensitive to disease or drugs that are not normally accessible through tissue donation. Prof.dr. Christine Mummery succeeded in growing these stem cells into heart- and vessels ‘on-a-chip’.
