Ryan MacGrath - Canadian Musician and Visual Artist

Ryan MacGrath - Canadian Musician and Visual Artist

Christina chats with one of her best friends in his home in Dartmouth, Nova Scotion. Ryan MacGrath is the founder of Joy with Honey Artful Living - A decorating and design studio based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Ryan combines many artful worlds: as a studied visual artist, he creates graphic, enigmatic figurative and stylized landscape paintings.   At the same time, the Canadian is a celebrated Singer/Songwriter with comparisons to Brandon Flowers (The Killers), Nick Cave, Roy Orbison, and Rufus Wainwright.

The common thread weaving its way through MacGrath’s artistic work is an engaging melancholy. According to the artist, he has an affinity for exploring contrasts in his music: joy and sadness, light and darkness, and loneliness versus togetherness. Here it is again, that connection between two worlds: the bipolarity which also plays a major role in his painting.

Ian Foster - Canadian Singer-Songwriter and Filmmaker

Ian Foster - Canadian Singer-Songwriter and Filmmaker

Christina chat's with one of her funniest friends Ian Foster about the challenges in making a film, staying positive, a healthy dose of rejection, and his relation to David Foster. Ian, native of Newfoundland, Canada, is a storyteller. That music and film are the ways he tells those stories only makes the telling richer still.  Once described by CBC’s Bob Mersereau as being “a fine example of what a 21st century folk performer should be doing,” Foster continues to evolve and defy genre, as his latest forthcoming album and film project Close to the Bone (2022) illustrates.

Ian has been compared to diverse artists like Bruce Cockburn, Daniel Lanois, The War on Drugs, Josh Ritter and more, depending on the album of his that you’re listening to. Meanwhile, his film scores draw more on Sigur Ros and Olafur Arnalds textures and ambience. This is not a bug, it’s a feature: it all comes from a love of sonic exploration that has only grown as Ian’s career has moved between touring around the world and producing albums for a diverse set of artists.

Ian has toured in Canada, the U.S, Germany, The Netherlands, Austria, and Italy, and has had his music played on radio internationally. He is a MusicNL and ECMA (East Coast Music Award) winner, a finalist for the International Songwriting Competition, and has numerous co-writes to his credit, including the legendary folk songwriter Ron Hynes.

Ian performs and records both solo, and as a duo with his longtime partner Nancy Hynes, with whom he released the multi-award winning album A Week in December in 2018.

Carlyn Oswald - Online Dating, Food Science and Austin, Texas!

In this episode I chat with my friend Carlyn Oswald  as we try to lend some online dating tips to my listeners about  setting up your profile, first impressions, red flags and background checks. I even share my limited experience using Tinder.

My first Aupair gig landed me in Austin, Texas when I was twenty years old. I had never written a song, and I have very few memories of what it was like being single and dating. Now I'm 43 years young, and chatting on my podcast with my guest Carlyn, who was only six years old when I lived with her family as their summer Aupair. Now she's all grown up, and has a plethora of experience to bring me up to speed on what it's like living single in Northwest Arkansas. It was so fun to re-connect with Carlyn after all these years.

    Matt Mays - Canadian Singer-Songwriter

Christina chats with Canadian road warrior, singer-songwriter and Juno winner Matt Mays about protecting the song, life's ups and downs, mental and physical well being and the hard work that goes into being human.

Since departing seminal alt-country collective The Guthries in 2002,
Matt Mays has alternated between solo projects (his self-titled
debut, the film soundtrack ...When the Angels Make Contact) and
band projects (the eponymous Matt Mays & El Torpedo record and
2008’s Terminal Romance). Following the dissolution of Matt Mays &
El Torpedo in 2009, Mays released Coyote in 2012 to much acclaim,
including a JUNO Award win for Rock Album of the Year.

In 2017 Mays released Once Upon a Hell of a Time… to be followed
a year later by the album’s ‘woody’ companion Twice Upon a Hell
of a Time…. As the pandemic shut down touring in early 2020, Mays
set up a studio in his garage and produced Dog City, an inspiring
album written from the perspective of a rescue dog. In early 2021,
From Burnside With Love, a live album showcasing unplugged
versions of his most popular songs, was released along with a concert
