The Harsh Reality of Hollywood's Faux and Fractured Friendships

The Harsh Reality of Hollywood's Faux and Fractured Friendships

You know those friendships that you just can't live without, the ones you cherish as a respite from the chaos of Hollywood? My best friend Estie and I had one of those. But after Estie’s recent move to Oregon, I've been forced to confront the harsh realities of Hollywood friendships.

From the toxic to the genuinely beautiful, I'll take you on a deep exploration of the friendships I've come to appreciate in my time as an actor. I'll also share how wise one veteran actor Kevin E West helped me redefine my understanding of friendship in the industry, and the valuable lessons I learned about recognizing a fair-weather friend.

Navigating Hollywood isn't always a walk in the park, especially with social climbers lurking in every corner. It's like trying to balance on a tightrope – maintaining an open heart, yet being cautious enough not to fall prey. In this tricky balance, I've gleaned some insights about the underlying societal pressures, cultural norms, and personal goals that drive this social climbing phenomenon.

More importantly, I’ve learned to prioritize putting myself first. I invite you to join me as we embark on a journey of self-care, empowering not just ourselves, but each other, in the unforgiving world of Hollywood.

    Agent Termination, Where's My Money?

Have you ever found yourself wondering why your agent's payment of your session fee or residuals is arriving late? Has it been happening more often than expected? Are agents facing financial setbacks due to commercial and television downgrades? It's natural to question whether agents are holding actors' monies until they collect big monthly payouts in interest.

Tiwana Floyd recounts a recent experience that led her to switch commercial agents due to $13,000 in residuals taking 60 days to reach her. This episode is an enlightening journey through the process of tracking down those elusive payments, interacting with payroll companies, and the absolute necessity to take action when something is a rye.

Actor Discernment: When Casting Director Advice Goes Bad

Actor Discernment: When Casting Director Advice Goes Bad

Have you ever found yourself caught in an endless loop of conflicting casting director advice, feeling overwhelmed, immobilized by which advice was the right direction to follow, not knowing what to ignore and what to keep? I've definitely suffered analysis paralysis of "what actors should and shouldn't do." And I was reminded that if you ask ten people for advice, you'll get eleven different answers.

In this episode, I'll share my experience of a recent conversation with a casting director whose service I paid $100 to give feedback on my Actors Access Site. Her superior disposition caused her to offer unsolicited opinions on my social media presence, my self-submission success, and my overall approach to acting and how I should do things without even asking about my business goals or getting to know me. Once we finally reviewed my Actors Access, she divulged it was the best she'd ever seen, and she didn't know why I hired her. And I wondered the same thing.

When we ended the call, I decided that would be my last time taking advice from a casting director or anyone who showed no interest in getting to know more about me before arrogantly offering one-size-fits-all advice.

Lastly, I share my approach to using highly effective postcard marketing to help me get into the doors of casting offices.

Consequences of a Hollywood Strike Revealed

Defending Creative Livelihood: The Fight Against AMPTP's Proposal and Understanding the Impact of a Hollywood Strike

Imagine a world where executives own the likeness of background performers for eternity without consent or compensation. This is the chilling future we could face if the AMPTP Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have their way. I'm TIwana Floyd, and during this episode, I'll shed light on the significance of SAG AFTRA's solidarity with the WGA in their fight against this dystopian proposal. We'll discuss how a strike, akin to the writer's strike of 2007, will not just impact actors but also have far-reaching consequences for the global economy. And we will address the uninformed objections from non-industry folks about actors' earnings and the need for us to stand together in this battle.

But the world of acting isn't just about strikes and struggles. It's also about the investment actors make towards their craft, from headshots to subscription websites, and the professional image they maintain for auditions. We'll explore the financial implications of the SAG-AFTRA strike, including how withholding performance from struck employers can affect the industry. As we navigate this tumultuous period, I'll share tips on supporting our show, preserving our professional images, and joining the fight for creative livelihood. Let's embark on this journey together and remember to tune into Actor Business School on YouTube for more insights into the world of acting.

    Before Yes, I Have Questions

    Before Yes, I Have Questions

It's essential for actors, like any professionals, to consider their career choices carefully. Accepting every job offer without assessing the value of the project can lead to potential issues, including burnout, wasted time and effort, and exposure to toxic environments. Tiwana Floyd's approach of asking herself 11 questions before accepting an acting job offer is a wise practice that can help actors make more informed decisions.

Here are a few common questions that actors might consider before accepting a role:

    1. Does the project align with my career goals?
    2. What is the quality and reputation of the project?
    3. What is my character's depth and significance in the story?
    4. Is the compensation fair and appropriate for the role?
    5. What is the time commitment and shooting schedule?
    6. Does the project have a positive message or theme?
    7. Who are my co-stars and collaborators?
    8. What is the potential for exposure and networking?
    9. Does the project have a good production budget and resources?
    10. Have there been any red flags during auditions or negotiations?
    11. Does the project offer opportunities for personal and artistic growth?

    Life After Strike

    Life After Strike

A labor strike of any kind brings tremendous concerns about income. As the Writers Guild of  America nee WGA is in an ongoing dispute with the AMPTP, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, with SAG-AFTRA requesting a strike authorization,  Tiwana Floyd is reminded of her first experience overcoming the adverse impact of the 2007 writers' strike, 2008 SAG stalemate the great recession of 2007-2009.

She shares the non-traditional route she took towards becoming solvent and lowering her overhead becoming more frugal and resourceful and more mindful of her spending habits. While reminding her listeners that life after a strike can be challenging, but getting back on track isn't impossible.

It was difficult to adjust to the changes that were implemented but she managed to find ways to cope. The strike affected her finances, and she had to make some sacrifices to make ends meet.
