But with the advent of new technologies, and growing concern over antibiotic use in the industry, could targeted metaphylaxis become the new norm?

A quick fix rarely fixes anything the way we want it to. Any decision on the ranch has potential to have both short- and long-term effects on production and profitability. The trick is to make decisions that prevent unintended consequences. One of the beauties of ruminant animals is their ability to use forages, but it's our job to manage those forages for the best use possible. Managing forages well increases dry-matter intake,  decreases the need and expense of supplemental feed, and even improves herd health. However, weeds — especially toxic weeds — throw a huge wrench in all of that.
