The Sit Down: Understanding the Process of Milk Donating in South Africa with Jenny Wright

The Sit Down: Understanding the Process of Milk Donating in South Africa with Jenny Wright

According to recommendations by the World Health Organisation, babies should receive their first gulp of breast milk within the first of being born. But what happens when the mother cannot produce milk or if the baby comes prematurely before the mom’s milk has fully developed? What happens when the baby is allergic to formula? Perhaps the next best thing to consider, is a human milk bank.

On today’s edition of #TheSitDownParenting, we are joined by the CEO of Milk Matters (a non-profit human milk bank), Jenny Wright to understand how the process of milk donating works in South Africa.

    Biography

Jenny Wright joined Milk Matters in 2005 in order to assist with running Milk Matters, a small but growing and developing non-profit human milk bank. Jenny’s desire to get involved in breastfeeding support was sparked by seeing far too many distressed mothers giving up breastfeeding because of a lack of adequate support and information. Working in the field of milk banking provides the unique opportunity to contribute towards as many babies as possible having access to breastmilk, ideally from their own mother or, if that is not possible, from a breastmilk bank.

The Sit Down: Using Play Therapy To Decipher Emotions Behind Your Child’s Behaviour with Yasmin Omar

The Sit Down: Using Play Therapy To Decipher Emotions Behind Your Child’s Behaviour with Yasmin Omar

No one can really say they’ve mastered the art of parenting. We learn different things about raising our children every day. Understanding your child’s emotions behind their behaviour can be quite tricky. Children don’t always have the language skills like adults to communicate how they are feeling and therefore tend to act out their emotions instead. As a result, it’s easy for us as parents to misinterpret or completely miss our children’s verbal and nonverbal cues.

On this week’s edition of #TheSitDownParenting, we explore play therapy with Educational Psychologist, Yasmin Omar as she provides insight on why this expressive technique is a valuable tool in helping us as parents to respond to our children’s emotions and behaviour in a way that will build their character.

    Biography

Yasmin Omar is an Education Psychologist, Former Teacher and Lecturer now working within the school setting and in private practise. She has extensive experience with learners from primary to tertiary level. Yasmin has shared her professional advice and opinions on a range of topics across different media platforms.

The Sit Down: Bookclub - Khamr: The Makings Of A Waterslams with Jamil Khan

Finding yourself and developing your voice is a natural progression as one becomes an adult. But, it is intrinsically difficult when who you are, is not readily accepted by your family and the society you live in. So how do you come into yourself and negotiate that space with all these forces against you?

Our guest knows a thing or two about creating his own space as a queer and a Coloured man. Jamil Khan is a writer, researcher and an advocate for Social Justice. He’s recently added another title, that being an author. In his book titled Khamr: The Makings Of A Waterslams, Khan shares how growing up in a middle class Coloured family with an alcoholic father and Muslim ideology, shaped who he is today.

The Sit Down: Bookclub - Slay in Your Lane: The Black girl Bible with Yomi Adegoke

The Sit Down: Bookclub - Slay in Your Lane: The Black girl Bible with Yomi Adegoke

    Racism…
We’ve come a long way from the days of slavery and Apartheid - but the effects and the impact of race culture continue in 2020. Black women are at the bottom of the barrel and bare the biggest brunt in every sector of society, across the world. But the tide is slowly turning. Today’s book review is about doing just that. On navigating racism in the world as a black woman.

There’s a great phrase by Maya Angelou from her poem, To our Grandmothers. In it she says, “I come as one but I stand as 10 thousand.” I think it exemplifies the work of two black female authors who are helping women take up their space. Today I’m joined by Yomi Adegoke. She is an award-winning British journalist and the co-author of the 2018 Amazon best seller, Slay in Your Lane: The Black girl Bible.

I remember the first time I saw this book as I walked into an Exclusive Books... I was immediately drawn to the bold and pink colour that said ‘I’m unapologetically for you, Olwethu!’

I flipped over to the back and read the first line “Black Women today are well past making waves - we’re currently creating something of a tsunami.”

I didn’t need any further convincing that this would be the book I purchase for my girlfriends and the bad ass women in my life as gifts.

I chat to @yomi.adegoke (IG)  on all things ‘Slay in your lane’ - the book spans conversations from education to dating to career and tons of inspiration and advise for us who, as @yomi.adegoke (IG) puts it, ‘are blockaded from all sides and there is little to no literature on offer to advise us as to how we’re supposed to push on’. 📚
