Beautiful Chaos - Happy New Year 2023

Beautiful Chaos - Happy New Year 2023

Reflect back on 2022, and look ahead to 2023, with seven members of our artistic & creative community:

    Caligo - Visual Artist
    - "The feeling of collaborating with other artists, and then seeing my work on a gallery wall... An experience that I'm hoping to have more in the future.... I found my mind churning new ideas again.... I feel like my inspiration and creative drive have been re-ignited."

Ken Devine - Artist / Owner of Frederick Street Gallery
    - "I want to evolve, I need to evolve as an artist... So for 2023, I'll continue my ongoing quest to agitate the artistic waters of stagnation as I chase that elusive, magical dancing light, colour, and painterliness that this artist in particular craves."

    Glenda Young - Best-Selling Author
    - "I'm a best-selling author, and I've waited all of my life to say that... My hopes and dreams for 2023 will be to calm down a little it, to have a quieter year. I've been very busy, which is fantastic, and I continue to write, but I just want to take a breather and enjoy the success a little."

Kathryn Barnett - Director of Regeneration North East / Producer / Artist
    - "So what has 2022 taught us? Sadly, discrimination is still a major problem - not just for disabled people, but for all minority groups... We don't get up in the morning to win prizes, it's because we love what we do as artists, and we believe in its outcomes."

    Jo Howell - Photographic Artist
    - "Our world is seemingly on fire... Luckily we weren't affected too badly by the pandemic personally, apart from career wise. I hope 2023 means that we can look forward to some really really awesome stuff. Not only just for me, but for everybody."

Chantal Herbert - Founder of Sister Shack CIC / Founder of Sister Sounds / DJ Awkward Black Woman
    - "2022 has just been beautiful chaos with all the things I have done so far, but I'm really proud of [our queer safe-space night] Bend & Shake. It seems to be a space that everyone has needed... And next year, 2023, I plan to make it even bigger and better."

Lyn Killeen - Contemporary Fine Artist / Participatory Arts Facilitator
    - "I really am focusing on arts for health, and planning on starting a new programme which is therapeutic, and introducing some wellbeing techniques using instruments and workshops in nature, such as in forests on the beach, and I'm really excited about that."

    Art-ificial Intelligence

    Art-ificial Intelligence

Today, three creatives who use artificial intelligence as part of their practice in different ways; Odette Johnson, Tyrone Santiago, and Phil Christopher. We discussed some of the challenges affecting artists as A.I. technologies improve - including copyright, ownership, and the potential loss of income that artists might face if numbers of commissions suffer.

As a Digital Marketing Specialist, Phil leads an A.I. art competition named 'A.I.A.V.A.' - he's forged a supportive online community around this initiative, inviting digital artists to respond to regular prompts. Click here to see more.

Odette Johnson, primarily a sound and music artist who utilises found sound and electronic music in her practice, has been experimenting recently with A.I. software as an iterative part of her process when it comes to visual art, including the Bird Jammin' piece as part of the current #VinylOutcry exhibition at Hills Arts Centre.

And Tyron Santiago, who is currently studying his final year of BA Animation and Games Art at the University of Sunderland, is working on a critical dissertation which investigates the negative impacts that A.I. might post to artists and to the arts world.

From Music Production to Orchestral Composition

From Music Production to Orchestral Composition

Meet musician and composer Andreas Poupazis, who studied music at the University of Sunderland, and hear the journey behind his piece of music, “Wearmouth’s Stories” - inspired by the Wearmouth Bridge - its ties to shipbuilding, how it connects people, and how it's endured throughout history.

Andreas composed this piece as the winning entry to a competition celebrating 18 years of the Sunderland Symphony Orchestra.  Supported by Arts Council England, their project “Coming of Age” invited new, emerging composers, like Andreas, to submit their compositions - and was performed at ‘Proms at the Point’ in Sunderland.

Poupazis is also a David Puttnam Scholar, having worked as music composer alongside various other film production students on a film about an asylum seeker living in Sunderland - which we discuss in detail.

Two Experimental Creatives, United by Audio Art

Two Experimental Creatives, United by Audio Art

With a plethora of sound art and experimental audio production which spans decades, Odette Johnson (a.k.a. Museleon - Artistic Musical Human) uses a combination of field recordings, found sounds, and digital processing to create rich, multi-layered, complex audio art.

Inspired by her work, Lewis Harrower, who graduated from MA Radio at the University of Sunderland earlier this year, took the "Muse" from Museleon.  He created a fifteen-minute audio documentary, exploring the world of Museleon and her sound art, giving us insight into her process as a sound artist.

Both Odette and Lewis join Jay in the ArtyParti studio to share their experiences working together; what they learned from their collaborative project, how it informed their own creative practice, and why they're passionate about audio production.

Featuring beautiful, original sonic creations by Odette Johnson, and Lewis Harrower's full 15-minute audio documentary.

    Where Infrastructure Meets the Arts

    Where Infrastructure Meets the Arts

As Mackie’s Corner closed for redevelopment as a commercial property, we held a last hurrah with an ArtyParti Celebration; celebrating its use as a pop-up arts exhibition hub, and looking ahead to the future.

LAURA BREWIS - Creative Producer, Sunderland Culture:

"Sunderland sort of has all the raw ingredients to be an amazing creative city. It needs some help sort of galvanising those things together. Mackie's Corner has been really successful. We've had people through the building. It's made people see what this space could be used for."

SARAH CARR - Manager, Sunderland Heritage Action Zone:

"It's a project that is really driven by a really strong partnership, animating those spaces and just bringing people into historic buildings that would've just been empty until work start in terms of restorations."

DR. LOES VELDPAUS - Senior Research Associate, Newcastle University School of Architecture, Planning & Landscape:

"People are just interested in the exhibition, but actually walking into the building. And it starts a conversation, which I think is an important one to have with people in the neighbourhood and the city, to come together and make this stuff happen."

Hoast - Supporting Artists by the Coast

Hoast - Supporting Artists by the Coast

Meet the art collective "Hoast", supporting contemporary art and craft on the coast in the North East of England.

I first met Hoast at their summer showcase, held back in June at the Tynemouth café named "Bistro du Parc". Walls of this gorgeous little bistro were completely covered in art, the floor absolutely packed with people.  Bistro du Parc's owner Viviane Chatel is artist herself, and one of the two Co-Directors of Hoast, alongside Co-Director and Artist Beth J Ross.

Also joining us live, four of the nearly forty other artists / crafters who were included in their summer showcase; each representing different focuses and specialisms.

    • Igor Tavares a.k.a. “Sphyfro” - an Artist / Poet / Dancer, who shared about his upcoming work based on the four "elements" of fire, water, earth, and fire.
    • Irmy Werner - often exhibiting at the Tynemouth marker, Irmy is a Jeweller, and she runs community craft-based workshops.
    • Adam Daniels - a Contemporary Artist, who specialises in landscape painting, and is putting together a series
    • Ruth Siddals - an Artist who shared about her collaborative approach to this exhibition with Hoast, and how bringing together thoughts from varying artists has helped inform her own practice through reflection.

We chatted about the strength of spaces like Hoast in engaging both members of the public and artists alike, the value it can bring to artwork itself, and the importance of providing a space for artists to exhibit work together - whether "high art" or grass-roots.

A Legacy of Arts in Mackie's Corner

A Legacy of Arts in Mackie's Corner

“[Mackie’s Corner] is a really quirky space. An old, unused building, it’s not just a white cube, and it does give you the problem of fitting work. You have to use creativity to your best.

"Every time exhibitions have been here, every panel have been used in different ways. To have been given to us as it is, it’s similar to my own art - taking something which is almost discarded, and making it into something beautiful.” - Anna Glover

This episode of ArtyParti was recorded in front of a live audience at Mackie’s Corner, a Sunderland city centre venue reimagined as an arts space. Meet the group of artists from “The Sunderland INDIE”, and hear how their practice was influenced by the building.
