    Back to One

Humans came from a powerful and profound design. How can we live at our full potential?  Whatever we grew up with became our "normal".  And we humans are very good at reproducing whatever is "normal" to us.  That is fantastic for a few but really stinks for too many others. Between what you already believe about life and the losses you've faced, you may want to break up with your "normal" in order to discover a life can exceed your expectations.  Imagine getting comfortable with that.

If we're open to it, we can become whole inside beyond what we've ever experienced, and life can exceed our expectations.  Let hope arise.

Note, The previous name for this podcast was "3Ps in a Pod". You'll hear that in the introductions of older episodes from 2020-21; "Back to One" better fits my hope for us all.

An Opinion on Opinions - Be Careful How You Hear

An Opinion on Opinions - Be Careful How You Hear

Everybody’s got an opinion. Share it with caution.  Real communication takes real effort.

What is an Opinion?   o·pin·ion /əˈpinyən/  noun

a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. way of thinking, point of view , viewpoint, outlook, angle, slant, attitude, stance, perspective, reflections, idea, assumption, conviction, in my view, if you ask me, the beliefs or views of a large number or majority of people about a particular thing.

Forming opinions are part of how we learn but are risky.  Sharing opinions helps gain perspective but opinions could become judgments where we stop listening, stop asking questions and bring division.

Work vs social media response patterns

    • The Risks and Benefits of Opinions
    • Written versus spoken communication and the amplified ways to misunderstand.
    • Be careful how you hear. Emotions, mindset, assumptions and their impact on hearing others.
    • Often we don’t listen, we interpret
    • Opinion vs belief
    • What if an opinion moves to a judgement?

Bald like a lion?   Funny stories of what was said versus what was heard.

Couple communication:  Listening versus interpreting.  Slowing down to speed up.

Seeking common ground and communicating good will.

    The benefits of debates

Discussion matters, debate matters, listening matters, telling the truth, getting to the “truth matters….. in my opinion.

Mentoring by Accident and on Purpose E33

Mentoring by Accident and on Purpose E33

Mentoring happens on accident and on purpose and being a mentor can be as rewarding as for someone who is being mentored.

In this episode, my associate producer and I talk about the many ways you can be mentored on purpose and even by accident.

When I was younger, I thought that people grow up and whatever happens kind of happens. I really didn’t think you had a choice in your future. If you were born poor, you’d always be poor. If you were born into a rich family, you’d always be rich.  Cause that's your lot in life; your normal. And I didn't realize how much you could change what your normal is by changing your focus or input.

As an adult, I had a mentor who changed how I thought. He really focused on asking what's your vision for your life? Your vision is your future. Having this mentor, in this case my pastor, really gave me new ways to think about what you put in your eyes goes into your brain and into your subconscious, which becomes your expectations, and changes your future.

    • We walk like our mentors, we talk like our mentors.
    • Pick mentors based on the fruit of their life.
    • Mentoring remotely or in person, over time.
    • Examples of volunteer organizations and mentoring structure.
    • Don't be afraid to ask for virtual coffee, once or multiple times to learn from others.

Discover how to change your future by making some of the same decisions successful people make and focusing on what you can take responsibility for.

Benefit from the habits of others.  Step by step, new input will bring new output.

Don't rely on an accidental harvest.  Choose what we plant to gain what we want to harvest.

A Roofing CEO with a Foundation for Opportunity E32

A Roofing CEO with a Foundation for Opportunity E32

This week's guest has a dream of making the dreams of others come true.
President and CEO of ARS Roofing, Gutters & Solar, Letitia Hanke is also the founder of The LIME Foundation in Santa Rosa, California.

Letitia shares how she said "Yes" to opportunity and became the CEO of her own business in her early twenties when her hard work made her stand out and her boss asked her to take over his business when he retired.

She knows how opportunity changes lives and even saves lives.  Her own escape from terrible bullying brought her a love for music.  The kindness of a teacher and her unexpected opportunity to own a business helped lead her to also start a foundation that seeks to harness each individual's potential by providing vital skills in music and the performing arts, construction, technology and health.

Letitia and Lenora both have experience supporting Opportunity programs and their passion is heard in discussing the life changing work.

In 2020, Letitia was a guest and recipient of a generous donation on "Returning the Favor" with Mike Rowe.  Since then, people have reached out to her from across the country to learn how they can create a program for youth as well.  She was also a guest on the Kelly Clarkson show.

Her website is TheLIMEFoundation.org and full of information and videos about their work.

    A Perspective on Forgiveness E31

    A Perspective on Forgiveness E31

With so much going on in society, this episode is a perspective on forgiveness.

We take a look at possibilities beyond an actual negative event to ponder what can happen once we're offended.  We end up discussing much more than we originally intended.

Regardless of who did it or what was done:

    • Can an offense change thinking, expectations and then the future?
    • How to keep control of one's own pathway
    • Does forgiveness equal trust?
    • Who gains freedom when an offense is released?
    • Right or wrong, is division the goal?
    • Examples of nearly unbelievable forgiveness choices

    Are You Enjoying Yourself? E30

    Are You Enjoying Yourself? E30

Are you enjoying yourself?  Kathy and Lenora have fun discussing whether or not we enjoy who we are and the great energy that can come out of something so simple and effective as knowing one's own value.

Ancient wisdom tells us that we become what we repeatedly think about.  We can use our head to talk to our heart and regain the benefits of enjoying our own value.

One thing we are to know well is the profound creative value of who we are.  It is a game changer for how to enjoy life.

    Outgrow The Problem - E23

    Outgrow The Problem - E23

Happy New Year!  2021 is here. We don't know what we will face this year but today we talk about what we can do to outgrow our problems.

Kathy Townsend and Lenora Turner have a fun conversation talking about practical and creative ways to strengthen the body, the soul and the spirit.

Most know it takes exercise and good food to strengthen the body but can we exercise the soul?  Yes we can and it will make us stronger, and maybe help us conquer some problems along the way.

We can strengthen ourselves by putting different conversations in our head. If we don't have peace in our soul, then it's hard to give our bodies rest. We should do the things we can do to make ourselves healthier, to feel better and to be better.

James 3:4  Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.

Grief Awareness: How to lose so you can win again - E21

Grief Awareness: How to lose so you can win again - E21

Many know how to increase, build and gain, few are good at processing loss.
Unprocessed grief is said to be an underlying cause of addictions and depression.

Much of our world is experiencing various types and levels of loss.  We need to know how to lose so we can rebuild.

There can be many types and sizes of loss: Life, health, relationship, job, trust, schedule, friends, job, sense of normal, safety, security…

What are some things we can do to help process our own grief? Our feelings need to be heard and acknowledged.

Know how you’re wired….some want more control than others…

How does it look when someone else is grieving?

Various Grief Stages:  not necessarily in order; may come in waves or repeat

    • Disbelief
    • Anger
    • Confusion/bargaining
    • Sorrow/depression
    • Acceptance

A few notes from "The Grief Recovery Handbook"  by John James and Russell Friedman

    • We don’t do this alone
    • Take time and respect the need to grieve
    • Talking or tears are positive
    • Write or journal thoughts and feelings to process
    • Practice kindness to self & others

In the middle of crisis, people aren’t taking notes.  They come to you most often to hear that you care.  ~John Maxwell

    Thankful On Purpose - E20

    Thankful On Purpose - E20

It was a wrestling match to get this patchwork quilt of an episode out this week.  I loved the topic but jumped around a bit.

    • What does being thankful do for your mind?
    • Being thankful is like food for your soul.
    • What has life done for me lately?
    • “Whatever is good” can help to  turn your mind back to positive?
    • A reading related to faith and some of the things that have helped me over the years.

You're much more valuable than you think and I’m convinced there is a God who sees you and can turn things around..

Happy Thanksgiving!  There’s benefits to making it a lifestyle, not just a holiday.
