Tracy King | Honoring the gritty, embracing the mystical

My soul-friend, Tracy King, from across the big lake, gives a peek inside the experience of waking up in a life shaped by evangelical Christianity, only to realize it was a life they never wanted, and could no longer tolerate.  Tracy shares their story and how they landed in a life full of grit and mysticism. I always love my time with Tracy, I think you will too.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Tracy King activates potential.

As the Gritty Mystic, an intuitive channel, transformational teacher and coach, Tracy reveals where her clients are in the levels of awakening to take the guess work out of divine development allowing for more "YES!" and less "WTF?!" The goal is to embody your SoulSelf - the same aspiration as the spiritual alchemists of old. The transformational formula is to Align, Allow, BE®.  In their self mastery mentorship, they facilitate experiences forging greater connection to one's inherent wisdom and integrating that BEING perspective in day-to-day life. It's not so much SMART #goalgetting coaching, it's experiencing-your-I-AM coaching. It's profoundly healing and empowering.

Jamie Rittenberry | When life give you lemons...

Jamie Rittenberry has one heck of a story, but he might sometimes be reluctant to share it as he admits to being uncomfortable participating in the "trauma-olympics." While he faced a ton of adversity, his humble and kind nature led him to downplay his own experiences so as not to diminish anyone else's.

I was simply hoping to learn more about Jamie's life and what kind of magic it took for him to not only survive but to garner so much wisdom along the way, while serving as an RN and co-parenting his children.

What I didn't expect? To be educated on polyamory... stick with us, it's towards the end! We talked about foster care, love, co-parenting, sobriety, early interventions, and ultimately being a cycle breaker.

Sona Bhatnagar | Wisdom from a Near Death Experience and Grief Healed

Sona Bhatnagar | Wisdom from a Near Death Experience and Grief Healed

Sona Bhatnagar M.D. tragically lost her husband, Mohit, and son, Nachu, within ten months of each other.   After navigating immense loss, negotiating with betrayal, and learning to walk the path of grief she founded griefhealed.com and the Grief Healed Meetup. She has made it her mission to help others find their way through all of the many losses we experience as humans,  and find a way to forgive, heal, and move forward.

A few years after the immense losses of Sona's son and husband, she faced her own near-death experience (NDE). Sona shares about her NDE, greeting her son in spirit, and the comfort it provided.

Dr. Bhatnagar has been featured twice on Arianna Huffington’s website Thrive Global and Cleveland radio personality Philip Keller’s podcast Blind Faith Live! Real People. Real Miracles, where she discussed triumphing over grief on the episode “Life and Death."

She received her medical degree from the University of Florida and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Maryland. She has been a practicing physician for over 30 years and a Grief Recovery Specialist. She supplements her standard medical training with integrative medicine, including hypnotherapy, Reiki, Alpha, and Theta healing, Johrei and Pranic Healing, Matrix and Reconnective Healing, and Emotional Freedom Techniques.

Sona’s manuscript had been very well-received by her focus group of fellow physicians, internationally known spiritual healers, and members of her grief support group––all of whom found tremendous value in its content and encouraged her to seek publication to reach a wide audience.  Additionally, during her son’s illness she received support from U2’s Bono and The Edge, as well as from Jon Stewart, and Stephen Colbert.

Alyson McAdams | Reclaiming our power and ending the war with our bodies

Alyson McAdams RD and I (let's be honest, I have a lot to say here), talk about our culture and the grip body and health obsession has (or has had) on so many of us.  Alyson is a non-diet, weight-inclusive dietitian specializing in disordered eating, intuitive eating, and family nutrition. Alyson works to help others develop a strong, flexible, and positive relationship with food. She is passionate about helping you discover peace with food and your body so you can show up fully for what matters to you in life. Formally, Alyson is a registered dietician,  her focus is so much bigger than food. And as many of us have come to understand, it is never really about the food.

Alyson is dedicated to having an honest look at the culture of dieting, fitness, media, and the unworthiness that is born of it. She wants to help other humans free themselves from these chronic concerns and help heal and ultimately liberate us from this toxic energy suck (my words, not hers).

This is a very personal conversation for me too as it is a space I had struggled with for a long, long time and ultimately a journey that has offered me so much wisdom and insight having waded through it.

Alyson is a social justice advocate, she promotes the Health at Every Size (HAES) initiative.  .

    Home for the Holidays?!

    Home for the Holidays?!

"I love meeting people's mom. It's like reading an instruction manual as to why they are nuts."
    ~Ted Lasso

This quote is perfection. The truth it holds is powerful and brutal. It is so easy to see that from the outside of ourselves when meeting the in-laws, or being inside someone else's hometown experience. But, when the table turns, and we use that wisdom to examine our own instruction manual, it can be pretty uncomfortable.

As we grow and change and become, and "unbecome",  these familiar, but less frequented spaces can be a brutiful place to reflect on how we have changed and it challenges us to stay true to our own progress.    Adding fuel to the flame, is the insanity of these times, especially after many of us had a year off from these familiar gathering spaces.

The reminder is to me is that we are complex, messy, beautiful creatures who have adapted to survive, and at the heart of all of it is our innate need for love and connection.

    Happy Holidays Friends.

    XO,
    Ann

Anne Zemba | Picking up the pieces after unimaginable loss

Anne Zemba tells her story of love and unimaginable loss. Brian Zemba, her beloved husband and soulmate died unexpectedly at only 43 years old. His loss created a ripple throughout the local community as his effervescent energy touched the lives of many, in fact many more than any of us knew.

Anne walks us through the story of their love, the experience of losing him, and the aftermath of walking through immense grief publicly and privately.  It took her years, and the right encounter with a friend that finally led her to a treatment that ultimately saved her life.

She gives us a peak at the lessons she has learned as the one facing deep grief, and offers insight on how to support others who are walking a similar path.

Melissa Kinney | What if a missed ADHD diagnosis suddenly made your whole life make more sense?

Melissa Kinney | What if a missed ADHD diagnosis suddenly made your whole life make more sense?

From the parking lot of Costco in the midst of a global pandemic, I received a phone call that has changed my life and changed my beloved friend Melissa's too. What if, after 40 years of living, you realize that much of the ways the world has been so hard are simply because of undiagnosed neurodiversity... even more so, what if much of your overwhelm, anxiousness and depression were symptoms of a missed diagnosis of ADHD.

Women and girls are commonly underdiagnosed in ADHD because we all expect it to look a particular way. We all know that boy from grade school who could never seem to sit still, stop talking, or stay out of trouble. I assumed for much of my life that I had ADD and considered it a strength in many ways, but I was missing some crucial information.

I didn't understand how much of a player it was in my relationships, my ability to keep up with work, motherhood, parenting, and how often it led me to avoid conflict at all costs.

Melissa had a similar experience, though it was never even on her radar until a friend posted about her experience which sent Melissa down a very familiar ADHD rabbit hole of discovery.

In this episode we talk about life before and after diagnosis, all the things that might have bene different and all the ways we are learning to understand ourselves, our children, our lives and look back with perhaps a little more grace.

Wondering if this might be you? Here are some common symptoms in women and girls:

    • Daydreaming and in a world of her own
    • Difficulty maintaining focus; easily distracted
    • Disorganized and messy (in her appearance and physical space)
    • Doesn’t appear to be trying
    • Doesn’t seem motivated
    • Forgetful
    • Highly sensitive to noise, fabrics, and emotions
    • Hyper-talkative (always has lots to say, but is not good at listening)
    • Hyperreactivity (exaggerated emotional responses)
    • Looks to be making "careless" mistakes
    • Might often slam her doors shut
    • Often late (poor time management)
    • Problems completing tasks
    • Seems shy
    • Seems to get easily upset
    • Shifting focus from one activity to another
    • Takes time to process information and directions; seems like she doesn't hear you
    • Verbally impulsive; blurts out and interrupts others
    • Appears withdrawn
    • Cries easily

Amanda Crowell Itliong | Not Dead Yet

Amanda Crowell Itliong | Not Dead Yet

Amanda is a badass human being. Her tagline tells it like it is. #notdeadyet

While you'd be tempted to think this conversation is all about cancer. It is really about how our circumstances define us, and what it really means to be ALIVE.

At 29 years old, living in San Francisco, with her dream job,  a husband, and travel, she was taken, quite literally, to her knees by the big-bad C-word,  ovarian cancer.  Now, at 41 years old, she has been in and out of remission countless times, and lives with the diagnosis of terminal cancer and weekly treatments to prolong the inevitable.

What makes Amanda so incredible is far-reaching beyond her cancer chronicles, it is how she has chosen to show up.  While we would all like to imagine the person we'd become when shit hits the fan on repeat, Amanda is who I would aspire to be. She is hilarious, joyful, fierce, and has found powerful ways to create a meaningful life. She is an advocate, an activist, a public speaker, a patient advocate and the kind of person who sends you a hand-made card in the mail to say thanks.

I am honored to have spent time with Amanda in conversation, laughter, reflection and mutual respect. I hope you enjoy her energy and learn from her story.

And remember Amanda's sentiment, while cancer in many ways defines and rules her life, her autonomy, her body, it is in no way the totality of who she is. No one thing is the totality of you.

Marianne Steele | The reckoning of healing beyond the mind***

Marianne Steele | The reckoning of healing beyond the mind***

*** Trigger Warning, this episode contains references to childhood sexual abuse and PTSD.

Marianne Steele's story is one that could fill the pages of a novel. She so graciously allows us to peek inside a story that begins with a traumatic childhood and launches from the era of free love, communal living in none other than San Franciso, and catapulted into an adventure born of her impulse to survive.

Marianne speaks frankly about so often she had met her own trauma from the healing born of the mind and it wasn't until she had a major breakdown of the body in the last few years that she began to truly reckon with what healing looks like, how to self-care and facing the diagnosis of complex PTSD.

Marianne now words as a Shiatsu bodyworker, an energy worker, an intuitive teacher, and a medium.

David Bedrick | Insatiable hunger and the wisdom held within it

David Bedrick | Insatiable hunger and the wisdom held within it

David Bedrick is a psychologist, speaker, teacher, and attorney, and author, but that does not sum up the heart of David and his work. He is a deeply gentle, thoughtful, and compassionate human being who shares an insatiable curiosity to both understanding human beings and advocating for those who are oppressed.

Together we share stories, deep questions, and a loving look a the world of body shame,  and the expansive world of diet and body obsession masquerading as wellness. He has written a beautiful book of women's stories through the lens of a compassionate witness. Not only are the stories he shares relatable, but they also hold the wisdom of looking into our own hunger to find the answer to what it is we really crave.

I have worked diligently to lean away from conversations on body, diet, and weight-loss because I do not want to give more energy to what has consumed so many of us. However, this conversation is different, it is deeper, more radical, and an invitation to look beneath the story for your own body's innate wisdom.

Lindsay Madison | Leaning in, showing up, forgiveness and learning to take your life back

**Trigger Warning: This conversation briefly touches on trauma and abuse.

Lindsay's heart is in sharing her life story in order to help others see that they are not alone. She is the byproduct of young lovers who never belonged together. Her father, a born-again Christian who traded heroin for Jesus. Her parents traded her back and forth her entire life and she often felt like a pawn. She was gaslit, abused,  and suffered a myriad of challenges because of it. She has learned to lean in, to forgive, and also to create a chosen family of friends.

We talk about the current world and how triggering 2020 has been for so many who have a shared history of abuse, trauma, bullying, and gaslighting.

Jen Tindle | The complexity of identity

Jen Tindle | The complexity of identity

Meet Jen Tindle, an incredibly bright, cerebral, and thoughtful human being. Jen walks us through her life experiences as she has grappled with the complexity of identity. Jen is a biracial woman, gay, adopted, and raised in a loving black Christian family. She bravely talks about the challenges she has had to confront along the way and how she is managing life in the midst of the Black Lives Matter uprising and the fight for true justice and change.

I am so grateful to Jen for taking the time to share her story with us.
