Learn from our mistakes…here’s how to make sure you keep your friends this summer.

They say making friends as an adult is hard… but whoever said that for the first time had never tried being an overnight camp director, juggling the demands of a 24/7 job with friends back home.

We don’t claim to be experts on this, we have certainly lost some friends and damaged other friendships over the summer and we want you to learn from us.

Giving back isn’t as hard as you think!

Many of us are fortunate to have incredible mentors in our lives, people we can turn to, ask questions to and share our failures with.

But how do you become a mentor?

Do you have to have worked in the industry for 50 years? Do you have to be a walking encyclopedia of answers? We would argue no - the best mentors are those who know themselves, know what they have to offer and can connect you with others.

You’re ready to be a mentor, we believe in you!

For some, it only takes one week.

Think back to when you were a staff member, was it last year? Ten years ago? 20 years ago? Now look at where you are now. Was there a pivotal camp moment that helped point you to where you are today? For our Guest Emma Fogel there was.

A moment at camp pointed her towards social work which eventually came full circle as a friend and ally of the camping world.

Emma Fogel is a Registered Social Worker with a Master of Social Work from the University of Toronto. She has a private practice in Toronto where she specializes in supporting kids, teens, young adults and parents through challenging life moments.

She has worked within the Ontario Camp Association for the past three years, offering pre-camp mental health trainings and support throughout the camp season for campers, staff and administrative teams.

The impact of camp is “boundless” - here’s how that played out for Kevin Amirault

Remember those initiative tasks you ran as an outdoor ed staff member or camp counselor? Those ones with the marbles that seemed to frustrate kids to no end? Tune in today to hear how our guest Kevin Amirault turned a love of initiative tasks, metaphors and building relationships into a career as a school social worker and how he works every day to bring a little bit of camp into the school building.

Kevin is a Master’s level Social Worker currently working as a School Social Worker in Ottawa. Kevin grew up attending YMCA Camp Chief Hector in the Canadian Rockies and spent several summers working as a counsellor there, and credits his camp experience as contributing to his life direction, as well as fostering the skills to be successful on that path. Kevin completed an undergraduate degree in Outdoor Adventure Leadership at Laurentian University, before beginning work at the intersections of camp, education and psychotherapy, first at The Boundless School and then more specifically in adventure therapy at Wendigo Lake Expeditions - with a brief stint at Camp Kandalore along the way.

Throughout his Master’s studies and in his current role, Kevin has pursued an interest in nature-based and adventure therapy, nature as a determinant of health, group dynamics and facilitation, suicide intervention and emotion-focused approaches to mental health.

Which comes first, our relationship or our work?

Many of us know that perhaps the answer should be our relationships but is that always true? Today we aren’t holding back as we unpack the pros and cons of having a partner who doesn’t get camp and the surprising benefits it can bring into our lives.

We all know that there are some people who just don’t seem to ‘get camp’. Perhaps they are the folks who ask us what it is we do all year long or who refer to us as ‘camp counselors’ long after we have told them that we are directors… this is a particular pet peeve of mine. We all have our strategies for dealing with these folks but what happens when one of them just so happens to be your spouse? Today we have Kathleen Gurski today to hear how she copes

Kathleen’s extensive background brings almost 20 years of experience in camping, outdoor ed and recreation, the majority of which has been working with special populations. Kathleen. She likely wouldn’t say it herself, but she is expert level when it comes to topics including social-emotional learning, Youth with learning disabilities, creating and supporting diverse staff teams, and building long-term sustainable youth programs. Kathleen is passionate about working with her staff team to ensure that camp and recreation programs evolve to align with the changes in participants’ lives, interests, and needs.

Tune into this episode as we hear about:

    • Do people in your life ‘get camp’?
    • When did you first realize this?
    • How has it caused problems/tension?
    • Did you try to convince him to ‘get it’? Did it work? Was it worth it?
    • Have you just accepted that he doesn’t get it? Has this helped?
    •  How do you make it work? Can someone see the value in camp/respect your work without loving it themselves?
    •  How does this balance work for you and care of yourself?
    • Tips to other folks who find themselves in similar situations

    From Rachel Kent:

Meal prep, I’m still working from home and I find I’m not fueling myself the same way that I was when I worked at an office because I just assume I can find food laying around. Leads to cranky Rachel!

Thanks for “saying yes” to joining us on another season of Beyond Camp!

Join us for the final episode of season 2! After a whirlwind year it’s hard to believe we are celebrating 1000 downloads, several speaking engagements and 26 episodes. This all came from saying yes when an opportunity was presented to us. Join us as we chat about the power of yes and finding the power in saying no.

Tune in to this episode to hear about:

    • The power of yes
    • Why end the year here?
    • Because saying yes got us here
    • Cassie, tell us some of the theory behind the power of saying yes?
      • Its a choice, it means that someone or yourself believes you can achieve something
      • Privilege
      • Opens doors to opportunities
      • Growth zone
      • It can be hard - requires work, commitment and accountability
    • Saying yes doesn’t mean that we can never take time for ourselves
How can we say yes to ourselves?
    • How do you strike balance between saying yes and also having a life?
    • How is saying no the same as saying yes?
    • Can we reframe saying no as actually saying yes to something else?
      • No is a guaranteed failure
    • On a personal note: when do you know you should say yes vs saying no?
    • Looking back: how has saying yes shaped our time during the pandemic?
    • Looking forward: how do we want saying yes to shape our futures?

    What is Beyond Camp?

Cassie Bloy and Rachel Kent are here to explore the intersection of camp and our lives. As much as people like to talk about camp and ‘the real world’ as two separate entities, camp professionals know that this simply isn’t true. Beyond Camp dives into how different aspects of our lives affect our camp experience, effectively bursting the camp bubble and welcoming all parts of our lives into the conversation.

Go Camp Pro is excited to bring you this podcast.
