    Joining me on this episode is my guest Amy M. Le. She is a Vietnam War survivor and Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) warrior. She is the founder of Quill Hawk Publishing, a woman-owned, Asian American hybrid publishing company based in Oklahoma. Quill Hawk Publishing is dedicated to amplifying diverse voices through storytelling and helps writers indie publish their books.  Amy grew up in Seattle and had a successful career at Microsoft and T-Mobile before pivoting to become a writer, publisher, and speaker. She is the award-winning author of the Snow Trilogy: Snow in Vietnam, Snow in Seattle, and Snow’s Kitchen. Amy is currently working on the second novel in the phoenix series, showcasing the resiliency of people who’ve survived deep trauma. Amy co-founded The Heart Community Collection, a resource for the CHD community, and sits on the board of the Vietnamese Boat People and Asian Artists for Mental Illness organizations. When she is not writing or volunteering, Amy is experimenting in the kitchen or screaming at the TV while watching NFL games, UFC fights, or Formula 1 events.

She received her PsyD from the Wright Institute, her Master’s in Elementary Education from Arizona State University, and her BA in Psychology from Cornell University. Before becoming a psychologist, she was a kindergarten teacher and she got her teaching start via Teach For America. She identifies as Taiwanese American and lives in the SF Bay Area. Creating a children’s picture book has been a dream of hers and “The Yet Pet” is her debut book that she both wrote and illustrated.

    The Last Cherry Blossom // Author Interview with Kathleen Burkinshaw

    Joining me on this episode is my guest Kathleen Burkinshaw.  Kathleen is a Japanese American author, the daughter of a Hiroshima survivor and resides in Charlotte, NC. She’s a wife, mom, and owns a dog who thinks she’s a kitchen ninja. In 2019 Kathleen spoke about her mother’s experience in Hiroshima at the United Nations (NYC) and on UN virtual events for the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing. She most recently spoke at a Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum virtual event in February. Kathleen has presented to middle/high schools around the world for the past 10 years. She now serves on the Advisory Council at the International Center for Multigenerational Legacies of Trauma.

    She also has been a featured guest on NHK World Japan, Asian American Magazines, and on numerous podcasts. Writing gives her an outlet for her daily struggle with chronic pain from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. The Last Cherry Blossom (Distributed by Simon &Schuster and Scholastics,2016/2020), is now a United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs Resource for Teachers and Students, nominated for 2019 NC School Library Media Association YA book award, 2019-2020 Volunteer State Book Award (Tennessee), 2018 & 2016 Scholastic WNDB Reading Club selection, and Finalist for NC Sir Walter Raleigh Fiction Award, 2018 Sakura Medal, Japan, and SCBWI Crystal Kite Award (southeast region). The Last Cherry Blossom audiobook (English, Dreamscape Media) released in September 2021.& Holp Shuppan Publishing, will be released the written Japanese Translation of The Last Cherry Blossom in November 2022. The audiobook version of The Last Cherry Blossom (Dreamscape Media) released on September 27, 2021.

In Efren Divided, a 12 year old boy's life is turned upside down when his mom is deported and he is left to fend for himself, take care of his siblings, while his dad takes a second job, with the hope that the mother will be able to return. We discussed how one student led to the creation of the book, how readers can feel valued through storytelling, how Ernesto's personal connections influenced the characters in the story, student and faculty mental health, and what it’s like growing up with a sense of disentitlement.
